The Queer Woman or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Halsey

I've been really angry since Black Beatles went number one, but there was a point where it went from "this song is bad" to "I'm extremely angry and really upset about this". That point was when I saw this

Then it hit me. I watch men get praised constantly, for some reason this year especially, for having songs that degrade women, songs about mistreating women, because the artist happens to be a minority. Many songs that have reached the top 40 and top 10 this year by black men have had countless lyrics about mistreating women, cheating on women with women who are also in relationships, etc. These things for some reason didn't bother me as much until recently.

When Closer went number 1, people complained. No, the song is not amazing, but people complained because it was Halsey. I saw no one celebrate the fact that there was a queer woman on the top of the charts. I saw no one celebrate the fact that there was a black woman on top of the charts. Someone tell me, I'm genuinely curious and can't find it in a Google search, when's the last time an openly gay or bi woman had a number 1 song? I couldn't find anything.

Songs with awful degrading comments about women get praised constantly yet Halsey gets dragged to the pits for...being a little annoying sometimes? Being "extra"? Yeah annoying people are SO MUCH WORSE than someone who constantly puts down a group of people and talks about treating them badly.

From this point forward, I fully embrace Halsey and her appearance in popular culture. Her success as a bisexual and biracial woman on the pop charts should not be undermined in a world where the success of men who degrade women gets celebrated. I no longer stand for the celebration of men who who popularize the mistreatment of women. Halsey is the only queer person, let alone woman, to have a number one single this year. I am celebrating and I believe more people should be. The song may be about a hetero relationship and she may be "white passing" but that doesn't take away the fact that a queer, black woman is on the longest running number 1 of the year.

That's all I have to say.

But seriously, if someone could tell me the last gay woman to have a number 1 single and the last bi woman to have a number one single, that would be fantastic because I honestly can't find it.

@TattooedHeart Funny though, I can't think of any woman who was lesbian and not white that has a number 1. rip4

The only person that comes in my mind is Tracy Chapman, who got a #3 single with a blues song called "Give Me One Reason" in 1995. She won a grammy for best rock song the next year because of that record. However, her own community, which is the black community, has never accepted her for trying other kind of music (Folk Rock) and not urban music.

It seems that some people can't just win because of their identities.

I feel you girl. I'm so proud of Halsey to be honest and people are too hard on her just because she's "annoying" or "untalented" or whatever the heck.

I was about to answer your question with "Work From Home by Fifth Harmony" since Lauren is bi and all of them are WOC, but then I remembered that it didn't actually go to #1.... It peaked at #4...... It sure as heck FELT like a #1 though with how much it was played.

I still feel like black men's accomplishments should be celebrated because they are an oppressed group rising up in a world no one wanted them to, but I also wish the popular ones that make it to #1 didn't feel like they're always degrading women (I'm probably not wording this the way I want to so I'll just stop).

Anyways, yes, #TeamHalsey/#TeamLGBT+WOC!

She's doing such a good job for herself, and like it or not, she is definitely an artist rather than just a singer and I really do appreciate that.

I hope 5H gets another top 5 now that Lauren's out, it would just make me happy.

Oh they should be celebrated, absolutely, but the lyrics shouldn't be ignored. It's not even like it's a milestone, it's not like black men have never had a number 1 on the charts. Talented men. Like Usher who...has a bunch of number ones about cheating on his wife...Also not to mention I never heard anyone make a stinker about Zayn being Pakistani and having a number 1. Especially since I've seen a bunch of people theorize that he may have dropped his last name to sound "less muslim" since America is an awful place rip4

Let's celebrate Drake, he has the second and third longest running number ones of the year and he's not super awful in either! Maybe I'm a Drake fan! I lowkey really like One Dance, it was just a little overplayed dead4

You know irl I'd absolutely say that black men have it WAY harder than white women in America, but for some reason in general on the pop charts, people have really low standards for all men and super high standards for women. #NeverForget Ashlee Simpson was practically banished from pop music for being caught lipsynching on SNL, while Chris Brown thrives and I think we all know what he did!

Clearly I've got a lot left in me jj3 TBH I was thinking about Chris Brown during most of my writing of the original rant sia1
