Does Your Fave Have 90-100 Score On Metacritic?

Recommended Posts

My point. jj1 I'm glad not everyone is so obnoxious. jj1

I can't at the awards replies dead1 Like there are only certain artists, mostly just those with big metacritic scores, who make real music. dead1

What even dead1 Even Rebecca's Friday is music, so they better sit jj1

Plus, I don't know how to put it, but the GP doesn't care for the critical acclaim. dead1 It's ok, I suppose, if they get it, but it shouldn't affect what we like or not. It's just another opinion from different people. Just because their opinion is favorable doesn't mean I have to like it.

Of course it's an amazing thing to have critical acclaim. But not everything that gets it deserves it - and vice verse - there are songs/artists/albums that do deserve it but don't get it. And that's mostly due to the fact that's pop music and not someone who sounds like they're on hard drugs playing a guitar. dead1

But still, the critical acclaim shouldn't become our opinion. "WoW, the album has 90 score. It's hella good" when in fact I don't even like it.

For example I'd take Madonna's American Life ( 60 score on MC) over Music ( 80 ) any day. jj1

Exactly. I'm not gonna go listen to that Led Zeppelin album because it has a 97. jj1 I still won't like it. jj1

Well, the job of critics isn't to tell people what to listen to. Their job is to make a review and focus on the quality of music.

Maybe some albums, with high scores, aren't music for the masses, but they play a big role in music history. Also, nobody likes music because of high scores. If they do, then they don't enjoy that music. People like different genres. If you like pop music only, then you won't be interested in rock music.

Can a critic make mistake? Of course. Especially today, it is so obvious when a critic doesn't do his/her job. Instead of focusing on music, they are occupied with hate towards certain artists.

It's like a "I listen to real music" fest in here. jj1

lmao    moo1

i have such an eclectic music taste tho like i can literally go from listening to kate bush to nicki minaj to idk keaton henson (sad beardy english singer/songwriter + love of my life) in a matter of minutes.

tbh what bugs me tho is people that are quite narrow-minded when it comes to their music exploration so for me 'i listen to real music' kinda people are no better than those who only listen to pop music    bey2

No because critics don't like pop music. ANY publication can critique albums. So a rock or indie publication dragging down the score of pop coz they sad their faves are phlops. There's a reason most pop releases score around 60. I don't think any of the relevant pop artists of THIS generation have 90+. Beyonce has something in the 80s, but she's not "pop", strictly speaking. P!nk has one of the highest with The Truth About Love's 77.

But as many others have said in here, metacritic based off 5 individual people's opinion is used by stans only when they have no commercial success. Some people don't seem to grasp that people like and enjoy different things.

I agree. I think you shouldn't review Pop music if you don't like pop music. It's like asking a rabid Instrumental Jazz fan to like an AC/DC album but hey, they're paid to say something about something they don't like, might as well complain on their reviews.

Relevant gurls this decade only included. I think Beyonce proves my point the most. It's the least pop of her albums but scored the best, but IASF scored the lowest for being a pop-pier album. The irony of most getting 61 rip1

Not completely true.

Let's face it, the trashiest and the most commercial music is in pop music. Should critics praise cringe-worthy lyrics and generic production? Many artists are too much focused on charts and there are featuring artists too on their songs. According to that you know you won't get brilliant pop songs.

Also, the most pop acts use the same formula. Sure, they all have their own styles, but in the end, it is just the same recycled song. The sudden interest into EDM in the last couple of the years by many acts. Britney and J.Lo who used to mix pop with urban sound, are doing EDM now. And both didn't deliver any quality. Did I enjoy some of their latest songs? Yes. Do I want to praise them?  No.

I don't mind if a certain artist wants to follow trends. But if an artist has no desire to have a different approach to EDM, then we probably are getting generic music. It doesn't matter who is delivering it (Madonna, Britney, Gaga...).

They are sticking to the same formula, same type of lyrics, cliches, currently popular feature act (Pitbull).

Critics shouldn't praise pop music without substance, with silly lyrics and generic music. Pop music isn't just fun music that entertain masses. Pop music can have substance, can be mature, serious, artistic, experimental... but the most popular pop acts don't do that these days or even try to. Why would anyone praise them?

But, I agree that some pop acts deserved better scores for certain albums. lj1

I still don't really agree with the whole idea of critics in music anyway, because like any art, it's subjective. My point really is that critics rarely give high albums to pop music simply because of the fact that it's pop music and is stereotypically seen as 'lesser' than other genres of music.

EDIT: I saw your post above, and I get your point. Still don't agree with some points though. jj1

I wouldn't say it is completely subjective. A dose of objectivity is needed in art. Knowledge too. I don't know if you ever read about kitsch, but it is a very common thing in films, music, fine arts...

I agree that pop albums are underrated, but I also have to say that there weren't many great pop albums lately. Usually the better albums have been done by less known pop acts these days.

Anyway, only one negative review can screw good metacritic score up. There is always one or two reviews written by haters.
