He's been lauded as a modern-day William Shakespeare on more than one occasion, so it should come as no surprise that Eminem has been named the artist with the biggest vocabulary in music.

A new report by Musixmatch has analysed the top 93 best-selling artists across 25 genres to determine who uses the widest range of language in their work.

Obviously some of these artists have released more songs than others, so the research compared the 100 densest tracks from each one, to give a fair idea of the breadth of vocabulary these musicians use.

Eminem came out on top having used 8,818 different words across his work, and takes a considerable lead over second place Jay Z, who has so far used 6,899 words.

Tupac Shakur placed third with 6,596 words, Kanye West is fourth with 5,069 words, while Bob Dylan is at five with 4,883 words.

As you can see, hip-hop artists generally tend to use a wider range of vocabulary in their work with some of the genre's biggest stars taking the top spots on the list.

The Black Eyed Peas are sixth with 4,539 words, while Celine Dion is 10th, having used 3,954 words across her 100 densest songs.

Elsewhere, Beyoncé places at 15 just above Robbie Williams at 17, who in turn is above Mariah Carey at 20.

Taylor Swift just about edges it over Katy Perry. Swift is placed 40 with 2,524 words, while Perry is at 41 with 2,519 words.

Right down towards the bottom are the Spice Girls at 91 with 1,497 words, but Bruno Mars is 92nd with 1,489 words.

However, it's Kenny G who lands right down at the bottom of the list in 93rd position. With sales of 50 million, the musician has used just 809 words across his 100 densest songs.

The study showed that generally people seem to like simple pop, with the three best-selling acts of all time ranking low on the vocabulary scale.

The Beatles place 76th, Elvis Presley is at 38 and Michael Jackson is at 42.
