Hilary Duff apologizes for 'racist' halloween costumes

Recommended Posts

Ya'll in here doing the fucking most while everyone has just ignored the fact that Halloween itself is the biggest cultural appropriation of all; it is a cheap, commercialised version of the sacred Pagan holiday Samhain.

SJW's kindly stick that in your mouth and smoke it. How about going out and learning the foundations considering ya'll supposedly care about people so much? Or join a local awareness group and preach in public rather than behind your computer screens? jj4

Not entirely correct. The modern conception of Halloween sprang up independent of pagan traditions. Harvest festivals as a concept do not and cannot belong to any one culture; there are harvest festivals known from the oral traditions of almost every country in the world, dating back thousands of years, many of which didn't interact with each other until quite recently. It's parallel development, not the influence of a diaspora.

Can't wait for the SJW trend to be over and people realizing that the people calling out white celebrities for being "racist" are just miserable, bored fools who have nothing better to do than make other "privileged" people's lives miserable so they can feel like they have accomplished something.

The beliefs surrounding Samhain (the veils being thin concept became a time to honour the deceased which then became a time to dress up as ghosts to scare the townspeople into giving you the gifts - or treats - left out for their dead relatives) almost directly correlate with what slowly became the Halloween we have today. Yes harvest traditions are seen across many cultures but it is historically reckless to say our interpretation of Halloween isn't primarily made up of a skewed and butchered version of what was historical Samhain; it is pretty much agreed upon by most historians (I study religion and history)

This! I can't believe the thread is filled with "SJW doing the most!", "people are dramatic", "this isn't racist!". If you don't know, that's fine - but don't try and label something as being okay in your own ignorance.

I don't think Hilary's costume was really that bad, in saying that I don't know enough about Pilgrim culture to formally comment, so I'll remain opinion-less on that.  But her boyfriend's is of the utmost offensiveness. Here is a really simple article that explains cultural appropriation in relation to popular Halloween costumes (including the Native American).

Once you understand cultural appropriation, I promise you you'll see it so fucking much - especially on Halloween. Just last night I was at a club and there was one white person dressed as a "shadow", which consisted of a black bodysuit, black boots, a black hat (of sorts) and the rest of her skin painted black. And you know what? No-one fucking read that as blackface except a very few people, with the rest cheering her racist ass on.

I'm gonna guess most of you are white, but that's no excuse - I'm so fucking white and I can still understand what is and isn't offensive. Step out of your ignorance.

OT: Hilary and her boyfriend shouldn't have worn what they did, but the fact that they've apologised and understood what they've done is wrong, is the first step to making it right. But actions do speak louder than words, and this certainly will not be the only instance of celebrity cultural appropriation this Halloween.

that girl better fucking SLAY

so glad she did whatever the fuck she wanted to do sass1

If I dress up as an ancient Egyptian is that offensive to Egyptians because they worshipped Egyptian gods thousands of years ago? If I dress up as a Greek god is that offensive to Greek people since they were pagans once?

Her costume isn't offensive but it's a couples costume and her boyfriend is appropriating Native American culture  It's not a big deal to us because we're not Native American, but the use of cerem

Only her boyfriend's costume is remotely offensive. She's only getting hate because her boyfriend is less relevant than her and people don't know his name.
