Donald Trump takes to Twitter to attack Civil Rights hero John Lewis

Recommended Posts

President-elect Donald Trump harshly responded to civil rights icon and Georgia Rep. John Lewis on Saturday, calling him "all talk" and "no action" after Lewis said Trump was not a "legitimate" president.

Trump tweeted Saturday, which happened to fall on the weekend of the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday.

Lewis -- an ally of King who was brutally beaten by police in Selma, Alabama, in 1965 while marching for civil rights -- represents a Georgia district that includes most of Atlanta. On the campaign trail, Trump regularly decried crime in urban areas while pledging to revitalize neighborhoods primarily populated by black Americans.

A Hillary Clinton supporter, Lewis criticized Trump's ascension to head of state due to Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 election.

"I don't see this President-elect as a legitimate president," the long-serving Democrat told NBC News' Chuck Todd in a clip released Friday.

It was an astonishing rebuke by a sitting member of Congress toward an incoming President. Trump, however, largely launched his political career by calling into question the legitimacy of President Barack Obama's presidency by repeatedly suggesting he wasn't born in the United States.

Republicans and Democrats alike  swiftly condemned Trump Saturday morning.

John Lewis is a hero and should be respected as one. He started as one of the YOUNGEST leaders of the Civil Rights movement and he remains now one of the oldest. He has never stopped defending marginalized people and fighting for their rights. Just last year he was part of the filibuster attempt to ban automatic weapons after the Pulse shooting.

This is a mural that HIS OWN DISTRICT had put up in his honor in Atlanta:

This man has spent 55 years dedicating his LIFE to peacefully empowering Americans. He has sat as a member of congress for 30 of those years. Trump doesn't have a single iota of the presidential quality that John Lewis has.

It's sad because John has attended the inauguration of every President that has taken office in the past 50 years. He has always been respectful of the office and has worked along side republicans his whole life, so he's not just saying this shit because his candidate lost. He is boycotting Trump because he sees injustice in the way he ran his campaign, and in how it's been found that Russia interfered with the election, and peacefully protesting things that he knows are wrong is the way he has made change happen his whole life. This is not a normal case of a democrat whining about the GOP.

John Lewis was arrested 45 times for his activism during the days of segregation while Trump was actively trying to avoid being drafted for the Vietnam war - he should know his place awk1

but he doesn't and people actually defend him for being a piece of shit awk1 John Lewis is a civil rights pioneer meanwhile Dump called for the execution of five innocent black teens and segregated his apartments :) and not to mention there are so many blatantly false statements in his tweets (aka how our President-elect communicates) that half of the US population will believe/actively defend jj4 I'm... tired

No one should be surprised- he pretty much baited a reaction from Trump by saying he didn't consider him a legitimate president.

Kind of like how Trump spent obama's entire presidency saying the same thing.

Yes, Trump is incredibly obnoxious and so was his response to John Lewis. I'm just confused at people who seem surprised, because it was to be expected that he'd react this way to criticism as he usually does.

I think the general surprise is over the fact that he would be so baselessly disrespectful of someone who is so highly regarded by the nation that he is saying he wants to lead.
