The NFL Won't Pay Lady Gaga To Perform At The Super Bowl Halftime Show

Musicians make money through a number of revenue streams including album sales, merchandise, licensing and live performances. If you had to guess how much a global superstar would collect to play during one of the largest sporting events in the world, you may be way off. Lady Gaga, like her Super Bowl predecessors Coldplay, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Madonna, Katy Perry and the Black Eyed Peas, will perform for the staggering cost of $0.00 this year. According to Nielsen and Adweek, 2016’s Super Bowl 50, with 111.9 million viewers was the third most-watched U.S. telecast in history. In 2015, 49.7 million viewers were in the 18-49 demographic, an audience perfectly suited for Lady Gaga’s music.

Even though Lady Gaga won’t be paid her typical performance fees, and it’s easy to argue that isn’t fair, the NFL will cover all of her production expenses. These costs are massive (ranging from $600,000 to $10 million in the past), so that is not a small consolation.

If all goes smoothly, Lady Gaga will join the success of those before her. After all, the world is watching, for better or for worse.

While this may seem shocking, it’s actually a very logical marketing move – what she’ll forgo in direct payment, she’ll make up for with valuable exposure. Over 100 million viewers will only increase her popularity. She’ll likely have a tour to follow, which means a big payday for her - the Monster Ball Tour in 2011 grossed $239 million.
