What Kemosabe Records Losing Money Might Mean for Kesha

Recommended Posts

In late 2013 or early 2014, @freekeshaluke tweeted that Doug Morris, CEO of Sony Music, was pissed that Dr. Luke's Kemosabe label was losing money. Almost a year later, it doesn't look like that's changed. Billboard said other Sony divisions RCA and Epic are doing well.

Miley Cyrus isn't a Kemosabe act. She's just a production client. None of the artists actually signed to the label are moneymakers. Becky G had a moderate hit with Shower. GRL had a top 10 hit in the UK and Australia with Ugly Heart. But the song peaked at 42 on the US radio pop chart and is already falling. It's currently 204 on iTunes. It could turn around with some promotion but it doesn't look good so far. Their feature single with Pitbull Wild Wild Love didn't do well either. Both Becky and GRL have albums coming out but currently no hits to sell them. Bonnie McKee's American Girl was only a minor hit. Juicy J had a feature hit with Dark Horse and minor success with his own work. The only major solo hit Kemosabe Records has had is Die Young.

The label is almost 3 years old but no artist who has signed to Kemosabe Records has become a major success. Kesha didn't sign with the label. She was forced into it due to her existing contract with Dr. Luke from 2005. Kesha wants to break her contract with Luke and she may be using a California law that says no entertainer can be contracted for more than 7 years. Kesha is currently 9 years into her contract. It's hard to know if the Warrior era even made the label any money. But Kesha's clearly been a lot less profitable under Kemosabe than she was under RCA with the Animal/Cannibal era. These problems with Kemosabe may benefit Kesha if Sony and RCA determine she'll be more profitable as an RCA artist. It may give them an incentive to negotiate a separation that ends Kesha's contract with Luke, which seems to have been the whole point of the petition.

It is a business, and if Kemosabe can't make money, Sony will fold it into either RCA or EPIC...they may not even bother and dump all acts and close the door.

Sony just announced one of the worst quarters in the history of the company and have suspended dividend payments to shareholders - a first in their entire history. Good luck, Kemosabe. Timing is a bitch.

Lol I love how Luke tried to make Becky G happen dead2

But here's hoping that they will close their doors tbh :creep: Luke with a label of his own gives him too much power, something a producer shouldn't have, producers help the artists to make their visions happen, not the other way around.
