Kids cover Dark horse like never before

Recommended Posts

A group of young Taranaki singers and dancers have created their own music video version of a Katy Perry hit.

About 60 Upbeat Glee Club children were decked out in ancient Egyptian costumes to film their own take of Perry's song, Dark Horse.

It was featured at Christmas at the Bowl last weekend and also marked the singer's arrival in New Zealand this weekend.

It was the club's first video for the year, which made it a bit special, club co-ordinator Helen Griffiths said.

A few of the lucky Glee Club kids are heading up to Auckland to watch Perry in concert at Vector Arena, she said.

The club had raided the New Plymouth Operatic Society's wardrobe for costumes and parents had also helped with outfits.

Fitzroy School pupil Maxwell Reesby, 9, played the role of rapper Juicy J, who featured in the original video, and Griffiths said the boy had a "great sense of music".

Kiwiana themes such as pineapple lumps, a Taranaki rugby ball, a bottle of L&P, and the cuddly Kiwi bird, were also weaved into the video because they wanted something that was unique to New Zealand.
