Meet Hermione

Hello! If you're reading this, you're probably wondering who the hell I am. If you still haven't figured it out, this is TLB. I wanted to make a post explaining why I decided to change my display name.   It goes without saying at this point that I'm a Harry Potter fanatic (and I apologize for not shutting up about it sometimes). I've lived and breathed this magical world every day for well over a decade, and it's such an enormous part of my identity. It has shaped and influenced me in

FOTPers as Real Housewives

By now, most of my online friends know that I've recently become a Real Housewives aficionado. A lot of people don't really get it, and they think it's strange that someone like myself with other more highbrow interests and pursuits would be so captivated by it. Some might even scoff at me, a self-proclaimed feminist, finding entertainment in a franchise dominated by catfights that often include hair-pulling and wine-throwing. I would tell those people that Real Housewives is much deeper than it

I'm taking a break from FOTP

Honors program life is all work and no play. I don't remember the last time I had a full eight hours of sleep (or even six, for that matter), ate a sit-down meal, read a whole book in one sitting, or had a real conversation with my family beyond them asking "Can we talk?" and myself replying with "Not right now, I'm busy." I've become so swamped with academic responsibilities lately that I don't have time to keep visiting here daily without seriously jeopardizing my future, so I need to cut back

Dear well-meaning white people

Author's Note: I can't even believe that this needs to be said because the answer is so obvious to me, but people are still asking and seeing Lady Gaga's recent tweets regarding Charlottesville pushed me over the edge to finally post something about it.   Dear fellow well-meaning white people,   I keep seeing you ask around about how you can help people of color. Many of you have tried, but you ended up getting dragged for making it about yourself or averting responsibility f

My Favorite Fictional Female Ass-Kickers

Leslie Knope, Parks and Recreation Where do I even begin? Leslie is the perfect role model: she's supportive of her friends, cares deeply about her community, remains optimistic in the face of adversity, takes her work very seriously but still makes time for fun, and always stands up for the right thing no matter what the consequence. She knows her worth, lifts up her fellow women, believes in herself, loves waffles, and even wrote this poignant letter about the 2016 U.S. presidentia

Happy Valentine's Day from Tiny Little Bows

I've already accepted that I'm going to die alone surrounded by cats, but I wanted to make a Valentine's Day post for my friends on here! I put together some corny cards on MS Paint featuring some of my favorite leading ladies, and I thought I would alternate between revealing a card and sharing a love song that I think describes my friendship with y'all.      "Thank You" by Dido   There are some days where pretty much everything that has the potential to g

How To Get Into: The Dixie Chicks

Hi, y'all! After the widely-acclaimed performance with Beyonce at the CMA Awards last night, I thought I would make a post about the Dixie Chicks. Plenty of pop and R&B fans who wouldn't normally listen to them tuned in, and I figured that some might want to familiarize themselves with the top-selling female band of all time. If this turns out to be a success, I might make this into a series where I talk about how to get into other musicians, TV shows, hobbies, and things like that.

Feminism: Liberal vs. Radical

A lot of people don't know the difference between these two major subsets of feminism, so I've decided to summarize each one and evaluate where my own beliefs stand. Feel free to respond and discuss below.   Liberal Feminism the most mainstream brand of feminism. commonly associated with the third wave. popularized in the media by corporations (H+M), celebrities (ex. Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Emma Watson) and social media (ex. Buzzfeed, Tumblr). largely focused

An open letter to my ex-best friends

I have no idea where to start, but I know I have to do this. I can’t bottle up these thoughts and feelings any longer; I need to release them so I can move on with my life and be one step closer to finding inner peace. If you aren’t interested in what I have to say that’s perfectly understandable and I respect that, but if you’re willing to hear me out your time and attention are much appreciated.   Now that the school year is over, I’ve had so much more free time to reflect on myself,

My sexual harassment story

I haven't talked about this much before, but after everything that's been going on in the news I feel compelled to share my own story. I want to preface this by saying that it isn't my intention to derail the #MeToo movement, which is primarily about abuse and harassment perpetrated by men and women's solidarity and I hope that this doesn't come off as whataboutism since I'm a guy and one of my stories involves a girl.   I was sitting in chorus class in eighth grade. At this point in m

An epiphany

This exact time last night, my friend and I were planning our escape. We were figuring out a budget between us, writing letters to our families, and trying to find a place to go. We were both completely overcome with confusion, rage, dread, heartbreak, and terror.   The 24 hours since then have not been any less horrifying. I can easily say that today was the worst day of my life. Other than one class where a violent shouting match erupted and I almost left the room for my safety, my c

15 Random Things I Hate (Hermione Edition)

I saw @Breathless Mahoney's blog post and decided to make my own. This is more like a list of minor annoyances. I'll post a positive version too...   1. Taylor Armstrong's uncanny valley lip implants.   2. Dumbledore's hilariously out-of-character outburst in the Goblet of Fire film.   3. The horrifying Elisa Lam story.   4. Cyberbully and fanfiction plagiarist Cassandra Clare's undeserved success.   5. When people leave

Life Update 1

I'm halfway through my first semester. I guess time really does start to fly once you get older, because I feel like my first day of college was just yesterday.   So far it is a massive improvement over high school. I was honest-to-God suicidal back then, and while those thoughts still creep up on me sometimes, my life is so much better now. I never thought I would be this happy someday, the truth is that I'm surprised I didn't kill myself a long time ago. I'm enjoying the independence

Goals

Setting goals is so important. That feeling of accomplishment when you get something done is always worth it, and it keeps me from feeling like I'm wasting my life. I'm going to share my current short-term and long-term goals in this post so I can have a place to look back at them when I need inspiration, motivation, or guidance. I also encourage anyone who is reading this to post their own goals below. And yes, I am going to talk to myself in this and you will all deal.   Short-term (

I'll show you how valuable Hermione can be

I don't come on here much anymore, but I used to regularly share my personal and professional aspirations with you all on my blog and around the forum. It seems like every other day I used to vent about something in the Let It Out thread, and now I have no reason to because life has gotten so good since then. I know it's cliche, but things really do almost always get better if you work hard and give it time. The past few days in particular have been completely surreal, and I feel so inspired. I

Changing my major/career (help please)

Growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher. I played school instead of house, and I loved helping my friends with their homework so I could practice for the future. So many of my classmates hated being quizzed about life after high school, but it never bothered me because I had a plan. I'm very indecisive about many aspects of my life, but this is one area I never had to worry about until now.   Last summer, I finally began my teaching classes after two years of general education and

My open letter to the electoral college

If there's one thing that I can't stand about my fellow liberals, it's how they surrender so easily. As soon as they lose, they lay down and die rather than keep fighting the fight. I refuse to go down without a fight though, and that's why I decided to write to the electors. I know it's a long shot, but it might be all we have. Feel free to join me and let your voice be heard at asktheelectors.org. Don't worry about how long and articulate it is, I kept my own letter short and sweet. Without fu

My NYCC Experience

I started off by heading to Madison Square Garden for a fan Q&A with Peter Capaldi. Some of the questions were really difficult to answer on the spot ("With everything going on in the world today, what advice would the Doctor give?"), but he did the best he could. I never got to know him as well as his predecessors because my interest in Doctor Who dipped around the time that he was cast, but I'm still going to miss him nevertheless. He was so charming and obviously thankful for all of the s

Tiny the Lifestyle Guru: Sleeping Tips

I'm in a very Gwyneth Paltrow mood, so I'm going to give you guys a list of things you should try when you can't sleep. If this is a success, maybe I'll make more of these about arts and crafts, fitness, recipes, furniture, decor, design, meditation, etc.  Here are some useful techniques that I swear by: Squaring the number 2 over and over in your head. Like 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, and so on. It distracts your mind from the fact that you can't sleep, and you'll be out like a light s

My Imaginary Gig Set List

My father loves to ask me hypothetical questions that make me think, where he'll put me into a situation and I have to imagine what I would do. I don't know how it started, but it's something we've always bonded over, especially in the car. Also, I don't know if you guys know this, but I'm a musician! I'm a skilled pianist, budding songwriter, and a passable singer and I practice all three every day. A while ago, my dad told me to pretend that I secured a gig at a coffeehouse, lounge, or small t

The Ghost of Online Friends Past

In the past six years, I've probably had upwards of one hundred online friends. This sounds like an astronomical amount, but it has been split pretty evenly over the course of four separate 'eras' of my Internet footprint. I have some great stories from each, some of which I may perhaps share in the distant future, but for now I'll start at the beginning.   First, there was a forum where Harry Potter and Twilight fans just went at it. Every thread was like the Battlegrounds section on

My Dedicated Tour experience! Philly 7/20 ❤️

My Dedicated Tour experience! Philly 7/20 ❤️

It finally happened! I saw my queen last night. After years of stanning and months of planning, I took a weekend trip to Philadelphia with one of my best friends, the only other person I know in real life who loves Carly nearly as much as I do. My journey began in Cape Cod, where I was on a family vacation. I drove my own car separately from everyone else, because saying bye and leaving them early was the only way I could make it to one of the northeast tour stops. I drove for four hours ba
