Look, I know every man and his dog are doing a Lemonade review at the moment but hey what can I say, it's a new Beyoncé album. It's a big deal.
Anyway, first: Pray You Catch Me. This bitch slayed the fuck out of me within the first 10 seconds of this song. I seriously thought I was listening to a Bjork album at the very start. The vocal layering and overall acapella sound gave me major Medúlla vibes, which is the greatest thing possible as I am a hardcore Björk stan (Yes I know, I stan talent). Anyway I digress, this song is seriously phenomenal. So so so beautiful and the greatest opener possible out of the 12 mostly flaw free songs on offering. After hearing this song, you know you're in for a treat listening to the rest of the album. The inclusion of the "what are you doing, my love?"in the song is amazing and always slays me for some reason 10/10
Alright so now onto Hold Up. Such a bop, quite refreshing coming straight after Pray You Catch Me. This song puts me in such a good mood, and the visual element of it makes it even better. The video for Hold Up is arguably the best in the film. Watching the video makes me cheer her on, like "YES QUEEN FUCK YOURSELF UP A BITCH"... y'know? The only thing that gets on my nerves about this song is the horns in the background??? Completely unnecessary and high-key irritating. "What are you doing, my love?" must've been Bey forshadowing her use of the annoying horns used in the following song in the album. 9/10
So the next song, Don't Hurt Yourself is a bit of a controversial topic amongst myself and my friends, some of us love it, most of us hate it. And I think that's part of the charm of this song, it's a situation where you either love it or hate it, I've never heard anyone say "It's tolerable". I love how in-your-face this song is. I fucking LIVE for the bit where she starts literally screaming, it is literally so scary, especially the video. Imagine Beyonce screaming like that to you, I almost feel bad for Jay-Z listening to this song. ALMOST. I'm not a fan of Jack White but I actually live for his parts in the song so that's nice. 10/10
Sorry. Another bop. I am such a fan of the "fuck you" message throughout this entire song. Sassy Beyonce is my favourite Beyonce. The video is also one of my favourites in the film, it's so sassy and the end slays. LOVE THE SECOND VERSE SO MUCH. 10/10
6 Inch (feat. The Weeknd)...... Yeah so like absolutely no. Love the first 40 seconds, but then The Weeknd comes in to fuck up the entire thing. So redundant; I hate that man. Fucked up a collab with Lana that was highly promising, and has to come in to fuck up another collab. I also think this song is quite boring, except for the bridge. The bridge is fucking PERFECTION. 6/10
Daddy Lessons serves highkey country vibes and I'm living for it. Fucking love this song, such a bop, her voice sounds amazing in it too. 10/10
Love Drought.... look, this song got quite old quite quickly. The first 20 or so listens were incredible, like GRAMMY WORTHY SHIT, but now it's just not as good to me. It's still an AMAZING song, but it's just a little boring tbh..... still an almost perfect song tho. 9/10
Sandcastles Give this bitch another grammy, right now. Flawless, emotional, amazing. Her voice sounds INCREDIBLE. This song is an emotional rollercoaster. Love love love it. 10/10
Forward (feat. James Blake) I really don't see the point of this being a seperate song? It would've been so much better as an ending to Sandcastles, as Sandcastles was already quite short, and another minute added to the end would've been perfect. Still love this song but it's completely unnecessary as a seperate song as it's literally a verse. 7/10
Freedom (feat. Kendrick Lamar) I expected more from this tbh. Love Kendrick, TPAB was incredible and I just thought this song was gonna be amazing but it's just kinda a mess tbh. Too much is going on and idk I just don't love it. 6/10
All Night I can't even comprehend how much I love this song, and how much I think it is the perfect closer to the visual album. It's literally indescribable. From first listen (before I watched the film), all I could think about is how good this song is as an ending to a movie, and perfect it was. The video for this is INCREDIBLE. Literally everything about this masterpiece is perfect. Again, words cannot describe how much I love this song. 10/10
Formation This song grew on me so so so so so so so much. Used to hate it, but the album version is seriously 10000000x better than the video version. Everything I hated about the video version was fixed and now this song is the biggest bop of the century. All I can imagine when I listen to this song is how Bey dances in the video to this song (which is flawless btw) 10/10
Love this album. One of my favourites from this year so far. The visual element just makes it that little bit better, the visuals are such a step up from Self Titled it's ridiculous. When ST came out, I thought she'd never be able to top it, but she has done it which continues to amaze me.
Anyway thank you for reading my first review, I hope you enjoyed.
Stay PERCHEDT for more! xxxx
