Review: Vespertine - Björk

Vespertine - Björk
1. Hidden Place: 10/10
One of my favorite Björk songs The production is adventurous and it reminds me of dark skies and the beginning of snow flurries, which will soon become a blizzard. The lyrics are just as adventurous and beautiful to match the production. Gorgeous chorus Slay me Bjallah
2. Cocoon: 10/10
Definitely one of Björk's most ambient and peaceful songs. This is Björk's sex JAM. When will your faves write about sex so flawlessly and tastefully though? She literally sings about her love interesting ejaculating and it's the most beautiful and poetic thing ever. Probably the most charming thing about Cocoon is how relaxing it is.
3. It's Not Up to You: 9/10
Serve me this winter realness though Yet more gorgeous and icy production. INUTY has one of my favorite choruses on the album. I love the air of mystery to the verses of INUTY the most.
4. Undo: 7/10
Undo is another relaxing track like Cocoon, but not near as good. I think Undo is good, but it drags just a bit The last 2 minutes of Undo are orgasmic in terms of production.
5. Pagan Poetry: 10/10
The song that produced the iconic, MTV-banned video featuring Björk's nipples. Pagan Poetry is widely accepted among Björk's fans as one of her best songs, and rightfully so. One of her most beautiful and enchanting songs ever. The lyrics are on another level of gorgeous. Song highlights are the chorus, and the background vocals of the chorus which sing about "swirling black lilies. totally ripe," and the last part of the song where Björk painfully sings, "he makes me want to hand myself over" A masterpiece.
6. Frosti: 8/10
Frosti is just an instrumental, but that still doesn't stop it from being good. This is one of the most straight up icy songs I've ever heard on an album, and it makes me wish I was taking a walk through a winter wonderland Serve me this auditory imagery Bjallah.
7. Aurora: 10/10
Um this CREAM in my panties? Those footprints in the snow sound effects Aurora transitions directly from Frosti and serves as a continuation from it. This song is THE audio equivalent of a gorgeous winter day. She serves amazing vocals and a heavenly chorus with a memorable melody. I feel like Aurora doesn't get near enough recognition that it deserves.
8. An Echo, a Stain: 7.5/10
One of the more peculiar songs on Vespertine. It doesn't have any kind of hook, so it's hard to get into, but the production is otherworldly, and once you're used to it, An Echo a (Cum) Stain is a really intriguing listen
9. Sun In My Mouth: 6/10
These lullaby-esque sounds. When will Melonknee Martinez? While I do enjoy the lyrics of SIMM, I don't ever really feel compelled to listen to it. Nothing else to say here.
10. Heirloom: 8/10
The lyrics to Heirloom are amazing, and the fact that they're based on a recurring dream she had, makes them even better. Something about this song and its lyrics are so hypnotizing to me. I guess it;s since I love dreams and I tend to have strange dreams that often occur again as well.
11. Harm of Will: 7/10
To me, Harm of Will is the hardest song on the album to get into, but that's not really a bad thing. I can never really remember it after I listen to it, but it's a good listen when listening to Vespertine from start to finish. I do enjoy the song, however, it's just that nothing about it really blows me away except the production, which is gorgeous, but every song on the album has that to offer
12. Unison: 10/10
The perfect finale to Vespertine Unison has the poppiest chorus on the album for sure, and it makes for the perfect album closer. Unlike the rest of the album though, Unison has a much warmer and uplifting tone; it makes me think of winter transitioning to spring.
Album Score: 86%
Vespertine is Björk's best album in terms of consistency in my opinion, but I don't think it's her best overall. This is the kind of album you should listen to from start to finish cause it's such a sonic progression. It starts out with a sound that gives me a feeling similar to the very beginnings of a winter storm (Hidden Place), then the winter sound progressively grows with a climax at Frosti and Aurora, then the next four songs (An Echo, A Stain through Harm of Will) sound like the bleakness and loneliness of winter, and Unison sounds like the transitioning of winter into spring. Not sure if she intended this, but that's how it sounds to me
The best: Hidden Place, Cocoon, Pagan Poetry, Aurora, Unison.
