My Pokemon Gym: The Poison-Type
Welcome to a new entry in the 'My Pokemon Gym' series. This series allows me to post about my potential life as a gym leader; showcasing the Pokemon I would use at different stages of battle. We'll do these in order from my favorite to least-favorite type. For this particular entry, I'll be showcasing my talents as a master of Poison-type Pokemon. So please sit back, and comment below! For those unsure on the series in general, I've outlined background information and the rules for the series in this following blog-post:
Gym #1
Ekans | Level 14 | Intimidate | Wrap, Poison Sting, Bite, Glare
Seviper | Level 16 | Shed Skin | Swagger, Bite, Lick, Venoshock
Favorite TM: Venoshock
Gym Leader Comment: For the first gym in a region, it needs to be easy but challenging. And for the Poison-type; we begin with snek city. Ekans and Seviper; the most iconic duo since Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart. Ekans - with it's intimidating ability - uses Wrap to annoy opponents, paralyse them with Glare, poison them with Poison Sting or flinch them with Bite. Bite is its attacking move of preference. Seviper also carries Bite - being perfectly prepared for Psychic-type Pokemon. Seviper also carries the more powerful Venoshock and Lick for paralysis. It also carries Swagger which can be deadly in certain circumstances.
Gym #2
Ekans | Level 22 | Intimidate | Poison Sting, Bite, Glare, Screech
Seviper | Level 24 | Shed Skin | Swagger, Bite, Venoshock, Glare
Favorite TM: Venoshock
Gym Leader Comment: By the second gym, you should begin to have a much more varied team; and this could include Pokemon with more defensive stat distributions. For this, Ekans is now prepared with Screech to lower defense on those Pokemon; and further crippling them with Glare. Seviper now also has access to Glare for paralysing its enemies.
Gym #3
Ekans | Level 27 | Intimidate | Poison Sting, Bite, Glare, Screech
Beedrill | Level 25 | Swarm | Fury Attack, Twinneedle, Pursuit, Toxic Spikes
Seviper | Level 29 | Shed Skin | Swagger, Bite, Venoshock, Glare
Favorite TM: Venoshock
Gym Leader Comment: At the third gym, the threat increases from two Pokemon to three. Beedrill is added to the arsenal here. While Beedrill isn't the strongest Pokemon out there, it can be deadly in this situation; utilising Pursuit on retreating mons and setting up Toxic Spikes to hurt any incomers; and boost Seviper's Venoshock attack up to ungodly levels.
Gym #4
Arbok | Level 34 | Intimidate | Toxic, Poison Sting, Crunch, Stockpile
Beedrill | Level 31 | Swarm | Toxic, Pursuit, Toxic Spikes, Pin Missile
Seviper | Level 35 | Shed Skin | Toxic, Venoshock, Night Slash, Gastro Acid
Favorite TM: Toxic
Gym Leader Comment: A new TM is awarded, the toxic power of Toxic. This can badly poison opposing Pokemon and is fully accurate under Poison-types. Ekans evolves into Arbok; continuing its own Intimidate shenanigans. However, if you dare to switch, it will stockpile its defenses up to untearable heights. While you attempt to whittle it down, it'll whittle you down with the toxic poison. And Seviper will clean up any survivors with 130BP Venoshock.
Gym #5
Arbok | Level 36 | Intimidate | Toxic, Ice Fang, Thunder Fang, Fire Fang
Gloom | Level 33 | Chlorophyll | Venoshock, Sleep Powder, Mega Drain, Moonlight
Beedrill | Level 34 | Swarm | Toxic, Toxic Spikes, Pin Missile, Assurance
Seviper | Level 37 | Shed Skin | Venoshock, Night Slash, Gastro Acid, Haze
Favorite TM: Toxic
Gym Leader Comment: From three to four. The dual-type Grass/Poison Gloom is added here. With HP-draining moves, Sleep and recovery, it can stop you in your tracks... that is, if you haven't been curbstomped by Arbok yet as it now carries all three elemental fangs to threaten and toy with opponents. Beedrill punishes attackers now with Assurance and Seviper will stop any set-up sweepers in their tracks with Haze.
Gym #6
Arbok | Level 40 | Intimidate | Toxic, Ice Fang, Thunder Fang, Fire Fang
Vileplume | Level 38 | Chlorophyll | Venoshock, Sleep Powder, Moonlight, Giga Drain
Beedrill | Level 38 | Swarm | Toxic Spikes, Pin Missile, Assurance, Poison Jab
Seviper | Level 41 | Shed Skin | Venoshock, Gastro Acid, Haze, Crunch
Favorite TM: Toxic
Gym Leader Comment: A few changes occur here. Firstly, Gloom evolves into Vileplume and gains access to the much more powerful Giga Drain. Beedrill loses Toxic in favour of massive Poison-damage from Poison Jab. Finally Seviper gains access to Crunch for mega damage coverage.
Gym #7
Arbok | Level 45 | Intimidate | Toxic, Ice Fang, Thunder Fang, Fire Fang
Vileplume | Level 44 | Chlorophyll | Sludge Bomb, Sleep Powder, Giga Drain, Moonblast
Beedrill | Level 44 | Swarm | Toxic Spikes, Pin Missile, Assurance, Poison Jab
Seviper | Level 47 | Shed Skin | Venoshock, Gastro Acid, Haze, Crunch
Favorite TM: Sludge Bomb
Gym Leader Comment: A new TM is now ushered in; the very nasty Sludge Bomb, TM36. It is available as a reward for defeating the final two gym challenges. Outside of a few level differences, the only main change here is the moveset of Vileplume; not only learning Sludge Bomb but also Moonblast for amazing coverage options.
Gym #8
Tentacruel | Level 50 | Liquid Ooze | Toxic Spikes, Brine, Hex, Sludge Wave
Arbok | Level 53 | Intimidate | Toxic, Ice Fang, Thunder Fang, Fire Fang
Vileplume | Level 52 | Chlorophyll | Sludge Bomb, Aromatherapy, Giga Drain, Moonblast
Beedrill | Level 52 | Swarm | Pin Missile, Assurance, Poison Jab, Fell Stinger
Seviper | Level 55 | Shed Skin | Venoshock, Gastro Acid, Haze, Crunch
Favorite TM: Sludge Bomb
Gym Leader Comment: The final Gym team tests trainers to the extreme. And the first thing to notice here is the new opening Pokemon; Tentacruel. Unlike the most of other Pokemon in this gym thus far, Tentacruel is very bulky in its Special stat allowing it to take the time to set up Toxic Spikes. It carries the very powerful Sludge Wave, and can punish poisoned foes with Hex. It also makes use of its lower speed by hitting extremely hard with Brine. The other changes here include Vileplume gaining Aromatherapy to heal the team of any status, and Beedrill gaining Fell Stingr to boost its attack sky-high in the case of any KOs it suddenly grabs. Can you get the poison out fast enough?
Gym Rematch
Tentacruel | Level 69 | Liquid Ooze | Toxic Spikes, Sludge Wave, Hydro Pump, Rapid Spin
Crobat | Level 67 | Infiltrator | Acrobatics, U-Turn, Defog, Tailwind
Seviper | Level 65 | Infiltrator | Swagger, Gastro Acid, Haze, Knock Off
Arbok | Level 65 | Intimidate | Coil, Gunk Shot, Earthquake, Sucker Punch
Vileplume | Level 68 | Effect Spore | Aromatherapy, Giga Drain, Moonblast, Venoshock
Beedrill (M) | Level 70 | Sniper | Poison Jab, Protect, X-Scissor, Drill Run
Gym Leader Comment: The Gym-Leader rematch is meant to become the ultimate test of a Pokemon-type. Starting this battle off, we continue with Tentacruel. It's massive bulk allows it to set upToxic Spikes while spinning opposing hazards away from the field. It can hit hard with its very own Hydro Pump and Sludge Wave too. Liquid Ooze can come in useful against Leech Seed carriers too. Next is Crobat; a very agile Pokemon being able to hit through substitutes and screens with Acrobatics and U-Turn. It also carries Tailwind to speed up the team, and Defog in extreme cases. Seviper also has the Infiltrator ability and uses a support role of status, ability suppressing and stat removal; along with Knock Off for punishing item holders. Arbok carries intimidate forcing switches while it sets up attack and defense boosts with powerful Gunk Shots, Earthquakes and Sucker Punches; which can be deadly if set-up to a high enough level. Vileplume can lure physical hitters into using contact moves and then being put to sleep or paralysed from its Effect spore. it can then heal off damage with Giga Drain, and fire off 130BP Venoshock on Poisoned targets. It also heals the team of status from its Aromatherapy. Finally Beedrill mega evolves by using Protect to gain a speed boost. From there it's massive sweeping with Poison Jab, X-Scissor and Drill Run. You better hope you don't get stung.
