RHYTHM OF LOVE (1990)

Little Kylie Minogue set about developing her third album with PWL after the multi-national success of its predecessors. A new, fresh sound, welcoming the 90s. Kylie had by this point most definitely grown up and out of her Neighbours fame. 'Better The Devil You Know' leading the album's sound, was the perfect choice for lead single, and just the track she needed to stay in the game. It was pure dance pop. The following single, 'Step Back In Time' provided a refreshed and modernised 70s disco scene that she pulled off avoiding unnecessary cringe or cheese. 'What Do I Have To Do' was a perfect new sound for the 90s, and remained timeless in that any dance music through this period of time usually has an instrument or element in relation. 'Shocked' in its single form had a little bit of a makeover by DNA, a stronger, heavier and more dance/groove-oriented version than the light, floaty version on the album. The album has a few weak points like any album, but this is by far a fan-favourite in her discography. This era in itself, the imagery, the sound, the tour - was all an unmistakable symbol of Kylie maturing.

I AM THE ONE FOR YOU (9/10)

'I Am The One For You' is an unreleased (until 1998) and unused track from the Rhythm of Love recording session, written by Minogue, Phil Harding and Ian Curnow. The gorgeous track is very piano and horn-oriented and encapsulates the early 90s dance scene. The lyrical quality is supurb and has a strong beat. It easily could have taken the place of Secrets or The World Still Turns on the tracklisting of the album. A standout from her PWL catalog, this funky little track is very reminiscent of what was to come in the dance side of Kylie's 1994 album. While it may not seem that timeless, it's still easy to dance to 27 years later.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO [BILLY THE FISH MIX: PART 1] (10/10)

What Do I Have To Do's Billy The Fish mixes are everything 90s about the released track and more. While at first listen it may sound the same, it is quite a bit different, using alternative drums and synth. This version of the track, originally played on Pete Waterman on his radio show, features the bass and synth from another record so was not to be the final released version. I personally prefer it to the album and 7" mixes and the intro, which features a bit more piano, is the perfect way to lead into the song. While Part 2 of this mix is basically an extended version and was widely released on remix CDs throughout the years, Part 1 is only found on the iTunes PWL archive releases. Even featuring a few record scratch FX here and there, this remix of the track is cuter, bouncier and fiercer track than the released version.
