I dig its sense of humor, specifically Oliver Platt in that cracks me up. I also like how it avoids a lot of cliches, like how pretty much all the main characters survive and so does the crocodile (well, one of them anyway).

Yeah but it's more of that comedy variety, not straight horror!

Bdw I recently rewatched Exorcist III and although it wasn't specifically scary, it was such a well-crafted movie, it was way too good for something with a III in the title, or being a sequel with a story directly continued from something. I actually saw it before watching or reading Exorcist, and it made sense to me anyway. It's a great film that needs more love.
