Welcome to the section @Satori! Glad you appreciate some of Mariah's work already. What are your favorites songs from her, so far?3 points
-
Nice taste! I love Whenever You Call and it's one of my favoriite Mariah songs ever, as well as Looking In. H.A.T.E.U. is one of the songs that made me become a fan, so I sure do appreciate it. Glad you like her newest stuff as well! MIAM is a very underrated record that deserved more praise! And what are your faves from Charmbracelet, if you have any? I think you listened to this album as well, right? Doing great here, wbu?2 points

Yes! Funny you mention Dreamlover, one of the things Mariah dealt with earlier in career was the strong control she was under. They (Tommy) were so strict with her, that she wasn't allowed to remove her jacket during MTV Unplugged. And one of the many things she wasn't allowed to do was produce, they denied her of that on her debut however for Emotions she gained a little bit more control and co-produced the album but still under heavy supervision. Dreamlover was one of the first tracks that showed the urban influences that she loved, that was truly the beginning for her as an artist. Some of2 points

I was searching La Isla GODnita on the YouTubes today and I’m shook at how it’s grown by nearly 50 million views in a year. Truly a classic If only she had one main YT/VEVO channel with widely available videos since 2009 like other older acts1 point

oh my gosh Whenever You Call is literally one of her best stan! Honey and Touch My Wig are great club bangers as well1 point

That’s already so hard to answer! Best I can do is a top-5/6 for right now, in no order: The Art of Letting Go - The first time I heard this I had a feeling it was time to listen to more of her music. I love it so much. Honey - Whenever You Call - Impossibly gorgeous. Looking In - Make It Happen - I absolutely LIVE for her voice in this, and the genre-bending production. Touch My Body - basically the most perfect pop record of all time. It never gets old. I love that she brings the bops AND the ballads.1 point

I am new, yes! Back when I first joined I was mostly active in the Taylor and Mariah Spotlight sections because everyone was funny and hilarious. FOTP got me onto Taylor and now it’s Mariah’s turn. I’d always had her on my radar and liked things here and there but I’m going through her whole discography now much more pointedly. I should have a long time ago tbh because I love it.1 point

Hi! Yes! I love MIAM. Her voice The production on the best songs I did listen to Charmbracelet too! The second half of the record lost me a bit but I really enjoyed the first half. My favorites are Boy (a bop! omg), I Only Wanted, The One , Yours, and My Saving Grace . I also loved Bringing On the Heartbreak, I have to admit. I live for her covers. Glad and to hear you like H.A.T.E.U.! I sent it to an old friend a while ago raving about it and they were shook and we reconnected off that song!1 point

Which makes her so much more admirable and really contextualizes the songwriting. I remember when I was young my sister (an absolute savage but she means well) used to poke fun at some of Mariah’s song titles, BUT in literature we wouldn’t be surprised to find an author writing about something idealized or escapist if they were going through hard things in their life any more than we should be with Mariah. I’m thinking of Dreamlover for instance and the trope of being rescued—makes complete sense. It also makes her songs about persevering that much more meaningful. Through the Rain isn’t my f1 point

Yes dahhling her life been done fucked up since she was born Yes, tea! I'm so glad you're stanning and I'm here to witness the era of Satori1 point

I knew the general arc of her career involved being with/managed by Tommy and the comeback post-Glitter but I had no idea her upbringing had been like that or that Tommy had been abusive . “Persevering” is a good way of putting it—bless her. I had no idea she’d been through so much. I love that she acknowledges her faith as helping her though. That’s all over her work and most people who are famous don’t own up to things like that but it’s clear with her that she was enduring actual hardships so if that’s what helped get her through it, I love that she acknowledges it.1 point

Yes, it's very interesting to know the backgrounds! But basically the gist of all it all is, she grew up in a dysfunctional biracial family, singing and songwriting was her saving grace, moved to NY the day after she graduated, struggled till she landed a deal (this story is super cute btw) released VOL and launched her career, married CEO of Sony Tommy, stayed with him in an abusive relationship till Butterfly, relations with her label were severely strained, left Sony, released Glitter--it flopped--fired from Virgin Records--Mental Breakdown, took 2 years off, came back with TEOM! This is so true about artists in general. And discerning how her music changed album to album makes knowing that background stuff very intriguing. Tea!1 point

Yes the backstories are the TEA! And I find the music to be better if you know where it comes from! Slowly but surely you'll know everything soon! taste!1 point

Thanks for the welcome Two posts above from this has my faves from her first two; on Music Box I loved Now That I Know and Without You. Daydream am I stan cover to cover. It was such a perfect album like omg. Right now my trinity from that one though is I Am Free / When I Saw You / Looking In. Same with Butterfly; I love it all but my absolute favorites are Honey and Whenever You Call. From her later albums a few that come to mind are Never Too Far, Touch My Body, H.A.T.E.U., It’s A Wrap, WBT of course, The Art of Letting Go (one of my absolute fa1 point

All this background info! We love an informed Oracle! I listened to debut, Emotions, and Music Box. I prefer the first two. They were both even better than I expected. I knew the singles from Debut but now I love Vanishing too. And on Emotions Can’t Let Go / Make It Happen / If It’s Over / You’re So Cold had me scalped. And yassss I’ve stanned Kylegend since Fever but I’d never listened to her older stuff either so I was soaking it all up on this trip. #blessed1 point

I doubt this is actually from the demo (probably just a backing vocal that never got used), but it's cool nonetheless!1 point

Yeah, finally seeing how much of an ass he is Apparently he cheated on Naya with Ariana, the Ariana with Jhené and now Jhene with Nicole. Never trust a cheater I guess. Time to laser that tattoo off!1 point

oooooh shit, that's so sad for her but I never really cared about his ass to start tbh what an asshole, she was clearly extremely invested in him and this is the reward she gets, what a cunt! can't wait for the hot breakup anthem1 point

No i'm saying Madonna has lost pretty much everything that made her interesting in the first place, i wasn't saying she's a vocal legend kii! Just stating that she's pretty useless in the industry nowadays too and that she isn't that different from Mariah. Both are now etablished legends who are pass their prime and have nothing much to offer. Just stop acting like Madonna is miles away from Mariah these days when she can't even release good music anymore.1 point

Mmmkay so the things you said about Mariah also apply to your fave. Mmmm interesting. That's all i wanted to know. And FYI she's not my fave.1 point
-
So you can't answer the question? Mmmmmkay. If you're here assuming that Mariah has lost everything you should at least be able to acknowledge that Madona has nothing to offer either. I mean of course this is BGs, what is the surprise of me coming for your faves too? Leave if you can't handle it.1 point

And what has Madonna to offer nowadays? I'd pretty much say they're in the same position then. Her music has been terrible since like MDNA, the fact a pop music legend like her released a song like BIM is just more tragic than any bad performance by Mariah. At least one will be forgotten and the other will forever be in her discography.1 point
-
she wasn't even singing anyway so there's nothing to criticize there, she's still a good singer so y'all doing the most with this thread and her being over. Who did i bring up exactly? ? She was unprofessional and a complete mess during that performance, where did i even deny this? That doesn't take away her status of a vocal legend.1 point
-
The actual fuck y'all can't stop bitching about how vocals aren't Madonna's domain as if that gave y'all a pass to criticize Mariah's voice. Kii It's like Britney laughing at Mariah for lipsynching like gtfo.1 point
-
Of course she has never presented herself as a vocalist because she hasn't the vocal cords to do so. ? I know what Madonna is, let's just stop deflecting and go straight to the point i've been trying to explain for the past like 3 posts. We both know Mariah would destroy Madonna during a vocal battle therefore the desperate attempt from a madge stan to drag Mariah for her vocals is ironic.1 point
-
I'm not the one coming for vocal legends, can y'all stop deflecting for a minute?1 point
