@bxigitte idk why I'm just seeing this fall1

Here is a letter he wrote that you can skim if you'd like! :)

Dear Members and Friends of LifeJourney:

In the midst of the political debate currently raging about immigrants and refugees, I would like to ask you to take a few minutes to consider the subject through a spiritual lens.  As a church, we strive to be nonpartisan.  As part of our commitment to reflecting the diversity modeled by Jesus, we take pride in being a politically diverse congregation.  But we are also committed to core spiritual and Biblical principles that transcend politics.  Some things transcend politics.

Did you know that there are more than 50 different Bible passages that emphasize the spiritual imperative of welcoming and defending vulnerable immigrants and refugees?  Clearly this is a subject very close to the heart of God.  Here are a few examples:

“You shall not wrong or oppress a resident alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.  If you do abuse them, when they cry out to me, I will surely heed their cry; and My wrath will burn.” Exodus 22:21.

“The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” Leviticus 19:34.

“Grant justice . . . ; hide the outcasts . . . ; let the outcasts of Moab settle among you; be a refuge to them from the destroyer.” Isaiah 16:3.

“I was a stranger and you welcomed me; I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink; I was naked and you gave me clothing.” Matthew 25:35.

Jesus himself was once a refugee.  Shortly after his birth, Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt to save the life of baby Jesus from the soldiers of King Herod (Matthew 2:13-23).  What if Mary and Joseph had been detained at the border and forced back into danger?

Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, whatever you have done to the least of these, you have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:40.

As people of faith, I want to challenge us to consider how we can be faithful to these Biblical teachings in the current political environment.  We won’t all agree on the specifics of policy, but we can all agree on this core Biblical principle: we have a sacred obligation to show great kindness to people who are displaced from their homeland by hardship.  Here are two practical suggestions for how we can live into that core value:

      • Prayerfully consider how you feel called to respond to last Friday’s Presidential order on immigrants and refugees, then register your opinion – whatever that may be – with your Senators, Congressman/woman, and the President.  You can find their names and contact info by plugging in your street address at the following link:  http://act.commoncause.org/site/PageServer?pagename=sunlight_advocacy_list_page
      • Keep standing with our church as we broaden our outreach to include immigrants and refugees.  In the survey recently completed by our Local Outreach Board, you, the congregation, identified immigrants and refugees as one of our top 3 priorities for local outreach.  So this year our Local Outreach Board will help us launch a ministry to immigrants and refugees, so we’re not just talking about the issue, but living it.  The groundwork for that ministry is being laid right now.

A closing thought.  One of our own congregants is a refugee.  Many of you know Justimore Musombi.  Justimore is a citizen of Kenya, born and raised.  He ministered there as a Pastor, then traveled to America to complete his education.  When word spread back to Kenya that Justimore was attending our church and had come out as gay, he began to receive death threats from multiple sources in Kenya warning him not to return.  We helped Justimore apply for asylum, which was granted.  He’s safe now, living and working among us.  What if Justimore had been denied refuge in the United States?  What if we had been forced to put him on a plane back to Kenya to be hunted down?

Many desperate lives are at stake.  Let’s do everything we can to make a positive difference.

      In Christ,
      Pastor Jeff
