What I don’t like about the Jussie Smollet shit even more than how it sets progressive agendas back IS THAT BY LYING ABOUT ASSAULT HE DETRACTED FROM ACTUAL VICTIMS.
Yes it’s horrible that this will become political fuel for Trumpkins and the Right, but the ones who will pay the heaviest price are future victims of assault and hate crimes who have even LESS of a chance of being heard/vindicated now than they did before.
What he did was an abuse of privilege and suggests an almost sociopathic lack of concern for others, which is even worse considering he’s a member of TWO marginalized communities.
Actual. Trash.

People driving fancy cars look like beetles to the stars
The missiles and the bombs sound like symphonies gone wrong
And if there is a God, they'll know why it's so hard”these words are from another place

I know what you mean but I think it’s just that she’s one of the very few people who apparently sings with an accent? I’ve wondered about this for a while.... her pronunciation of some words is odd, but very distinctive. Her voice is quite mercurial. Can be very warm and intimate but also oddly distant and hard to pin down, like Jonna Lee’s....

To be fair, I think that she is not in love with Godtime Stories because her label was too restrictive about what she wanted to do. I think she really loves the material she created but I don't think she likes the era because of all the controversy she still had with Erotica. She was basically a joke those years. But sometimes it feels like she doesn't really love anything from the 90s besides Vogue.
And she still being strong with Hard Candy is why it seems she lost her touch by leaving Warner. She was pretty messy with the whole HC era, but at least she did sound like she was in the head of the project and wasn't there just to sing and call it a day like she sounds in most of the songs from MDNA. Warner also said NO to Candy Shop as a lead single. With her new label that probably would've happened.
The thing is, her team was really bad in the last 2 eras and it seems she realized that because everything from Madame X is starting better, even if I don't like the song, it seems more memorable than last time. So... She does have her touch still, I was wrong, but she does need people who push her to do better.

I think that's definitely the case re Bedtime Stories and her still having a hard time with that period of her career. To go from all the backlash of Erotica and then having the label try to micromanage her was probably vile. It reminds me of the way she shaded the MDNA/RH eras on Insta leading up to this one by @ing Guy O and implying she phoned things in because she was being pushed a certain way. Maybe less so with RH than MDNA but still. It's a shame that there's a lingering resentment for the early 90s material and I think you're right in that regard. I love Vogue but there are other things she should recover from that time and revisit.
HC is a weird situation. I agree with you that this was the last one that seems to show her distinctive touch, but it's also the beginning of the decline. It's the first Madonna album since before RoL where there are songs that literally serve no purpose and are 100% filler (like Dance 2night... wtf with that useless and basic song that absolutely anyone could have recorded). Even with that, though, MDNA barely feels like a Madonna record by comparison. There are like three songs that indisputably great and the rest might be good but are definitely basic on some level.
I 100% agree with what you said at the end about her team failing her the last two and her really needing a strong set of managers to make shit not a mess. I'm really pleased you're observing a change in this era despite not caring for Medellin. I notice it too!

Ray of Light got me emotional and FUCKED UP today Every single song... The all of it-ness... 20 years ago today since Madonna invented music and the color blue and visuals and lyrics and vinyl dresses exposing nipples in booklet photographs.

Starting a new semester like:
”Evidently my qualifications were merely lies
Reverberating in my ears
And the echo won’t subside
There’s a deep deep loss of hope
And the imposter syndrome burns in me
I hope you don’t get no ideas ’bout succeeding baby,
‘cause that’s the last thing I truly can be
My doubt is too much to be believed, so
Go to Hope on your contacts
Press delete.” -
Bruce Springsteen's "Secret Garden" outsold

I listened on earphones during a break from work and definitely liked it more than I remembered. Your impacT. There’s some real influences of jazz in it, and to me this brings out something I’d never associated with the album before. I know BS is her first R&B influenced album as a whole, but it’s interesting to look backward and find threads from that and other genres of black music (like soul and gospel on parts of LaP and some jazz in Secret Garden) that were there before.

ughhhh Goldfrapp really saved pop with the Silver Eye era The stunning visuals and artwork and impeccably choreographed music videos The thick, viscous rivers of seductive electronica
