  1. Why are Mariah's Music Box rarities/b-sides some of the best tracks of her whole damn career but Music Box is one of her weakest albums? jj4

How did we not get a whole album that serves as much as Do You Think of Me?

Right?! Even the singles from this album aren't really that great imo. Music Box is the only track on the album that hints at something a bit more interesting, otherwise the rest of the album (besides maybe Dreamlover due to the sample use) feels like anyone else could've recorded it dead2

I think Tomato is to blame.

The Music Box era was the period when he had the most control over Mariah and she had the least creative freedom. He wanted her to go in a safe commercial adult contemporary direction with songs like Hero whereas she wanted to go in s more hip-hop/RnB direction with songs like Do You Think Of Me.

Let's not forget in the demo version of Dreamlover the instrumental was far more "Urban" and the song was structured to feature a male rapper. It was Walter who was brought in to basically "white wash" it in to a polished bubblegum pop song. (I hate refering to music genres as being white or black but in this context it is what it is...). It wasn't until the Fantasy Remix that Mariah got what she wanted but even then there was resistance from her label.

how many of the hip-hop/r&b demos of the album leaked? or how many versions of the MB album songs exist on the internet? someone should make a version of the album using the unreleased songs and demos.
