  1. source: https://www.apnews.com/93ea1b3f7f134909a33838bda94b2dba Basically these castaways (of which 32 minors) are held as hostages in the boat in serious health conditions and shortage of food/water. According to international laws, they have the right to be welcomed in the nearest safe harbor, which would be Italy, but the Italian far-right government has made a law that classifies as criminals those who save lives at sea and it claims that castaways should go back to die in the concentration camps in Libya or be welcomed by other EU countries. While it makes sense to relocate them all over Europe, there is no reason for the castaways to keep suffering on the boat while waiting for the EU decision. They could easily wait on Italy in some reception facility, but the far-right Italian government is using them for electoral campaign to show that Italian borders are closed to African people. Do you reckon that the admirable gesture of Richard Gere will serve as an example and help to free the hostages?

  3. A potentially habitable 'super-Earth' has been discovered just 31 light-years away from our solar system, astronomers announced Wednesday. The planet, named GJ 357 d, is about six times larger than Earth and orbits a dwarf sun GJ 357, much smaller than our own, every 55.7 days. The international team of astronomers that discovered the planet said in a news release that it could "provide Earth-like conditions." “With a thick atmosphere, the planet GJ 357 d could maintain liquid water on its surface like Earth, and we could pick out signs of life with telescopes that will soon be online,” Lisa Kaltenegger, the director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell and associate professor in astronomy, said in a statement. “If GJ 357 d were to show signs of life, it would be at the top of everyone’s travel list – and we could answer a 1,000-year-old question on whether we are alone in the cosmos.” Without an atmosphere, the planet would have an equilibrium temperature of 64 degrees below zero, according to NASA, which would make it "more glacial than habitable." While using NASA’s planet-hunting Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in early 2019, a team led by Rafael Luque of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) on Tenerife first discovered another planet GJ 357 b, a “hot Earth," orbiting the dwarf sun. The satellite finds other worlds by monitoring the nearest and brightest stars for periodic dips in light. These dips, called transits, suggest a planet may be passing in front of its star. Follow up observations from the ground lead to the discovery of two more planets orbiting the dwarf sun, including the super-Earth. Two of the planets discovered are considered too hot to support life as we know it, but GJ 357 d is in the host star's habitable zone meaning it's not too hot or too cold. Kaltenegger told NBC News that a pair of telescopes that are expected to begin operating in 2021 and 2025 should reveal whether the planet is rocky or has oceans. “This is definitely going to be one of the best targets for these telescopes because it’s so close and so bright,” Kaltenegger told NBC News. “This means we can collect that light and analyze it further to see the chemical composition of the atmosphere, or if we see signs of liquid water or oxygen. The closer the better and the brighter the better, and this one happens to be both.” https://start.att.net/news/read/article/usa_today-astronomers_have_discovered_a_superearth_just_31_l-rgannett/category/news
  4. US and Canadian fighter jets intercepted two Russian long-range bombers off the coast of Alaska Thursday, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which released images of the encounter. Two US F-22 stealth jets and two Canadian CF-18 fighters intercepted the nuclear-capable Russian Tu-95 Bear bombers after they entered Alaskan and Canadian Air Defense Identification Zones, which extend approximately 200 miles off Alaska's western coast, NORAD said in a statement. The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace and never entered US or Canadian sovereign territory, the statement added. This latest intercept comes at a complicated time in US-Russian relations. On one hand, President Donald Trump has made it clear that he wants to improve relations with Moscow, but at the same time, the two countries have clashed over a wide range of geopolitical issues, including Russia's annexation of Crimea, election interference and the attempted poisoning of an alleged Russian spy in Britain. It is also just the latest in a string of encounters between US and Russian military assets this year. Russian bomber flights like the one that took place on Thursday are viewed by US military officials as part of Moscow's effort to train its military for a potential crisis while simultaneously sending a message of strength to adversaries. US officials say Russian bombers and jets have flown in the area several times a year for the last few years and have similarly been intercepted by US or Canadian jets operating as part of NORAD. "NORAD's top priority is defending Canada and the United States. NORAD operators identified and intercepted the Russian aircraft flying near our nations," said Gen. Terrence J. O'Shaughnessy, the NORAD commander. "Whether responding to violators of restricted airspace domestically or identifying and intercepting foreign military aircraft, NORAD is on alert 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year." Thursday's incident comes after NORAD identified two Russian maritime reconnaissance anti-submarine warfare aircraft entering the same zone last week. "The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace west of mainland Alaska and at no time did the aircraft enter sovereign United States airspace," NORAD said in a statement about that incident. The most recent intercept involving Russian aircraft off the coast of Alaska took place in May when two US F-22s intercepted four Russian bombers and two Su-35 fighter jets that flew into the Air Defense Identification Zone. In January, a US E-3 aircraft, two F-22 fighter jets and two Canadian CF-18 fighter jets similarly "positively identified" two Russian Tu-160 Blackjack strategic bombers entering the Canadian Air Defense Identification Zone. The US also conducts similar flights in international airspace near the Russian coast though at times, has accused Russian pilots of performing unsafe or unprofessional maneuvers during the encounters. In June, a Russian jet intercepted a US aircraft flying in international airspace over the Mediterranean Sea three times in just under three hours, according to the US 6th Fleet. The second of the three interactions "was determined to be unsafe" due to the Russian aircraft "conducting a high speed pass directly in front of the mission aircraft, which put our pilots and crew at risk," the 6th fleet said in a statement at the time. The Russian aircraft was armed and passed about 150 feet directly in front of the US plane, according to two US officials. The Russian military disputed the US Navy's characterization of the intercept as unsafe https://start.att.net/news/read/article/cnn-us_fighter_jets_intercept_russian_bombers_near_ala-cnn2/category/news+

  9. Often described as "the zombie movie that never ends," The Walking Dead has has finally defied its core premise by… well, ending. The Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment comic book series, first published in 2003, has reached its conclusion, in a fashion that mirrors the ways in which main characters were regularly killed off: with no warning at all. Creator Robert Kirkman and artist Charlie Adlard concluded the industry-changing comic book series with Wednesday's The Walking Dead #193, an extra-sized edition that plays out as a sprawling epilogue to Rick Grimes' story. The series finale comes just shy of a landmark 200th issue; what's more, the ending has arrived without any advance warning, to the point that Kirkman and Skybound solicited several subsequent issues with cover art from Adlard. Those covers and solicitations were created to preserve the secret behind the series finale, according to Kirkman himself. "I hate knowing what's coming," Kirkman wrote in the concluding pages of Walking Dead #193. "As a fan, I hate it when I realize I’m in the third act of a movie and the story is winding down. I hate that I can count commercial breaks and know I’m nearing the end of a TV show. I hate that you can feel when you’re getting to the end of a book, or a graphic novel. Some of the best episodes of Game of Thrones are when they’re structured in such a way and paced to perfection so your brain can’t tell if it’s been watching for 15 minutes or 50 minutes ... and when the end comes ... you’re stunned." https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/walking-dead-ends-robert-kirkman-comic-book-ends-surprise-finale-1222097
  10. US satirical publication Mad Magazine is ceasing publication of new material after 67 years. The magazine will stop publishing new content after its next issue. Any new issues will feature previously released content with a new cover. It will also now only be available in comic stores and to subscribers. Many fans responded to the news to share their disappointment. Some described how influential the magazine had been growing up. Mad Magazine was known for its striking front covers, in which it parodies both current affairs and popular television programmes. It often featured the magazine's gap-toothed child mascot Alfred E. Newman on the cover. The magazine was founded in 1952 and began life as a comic book before changing to a magazine format in 1955. DC, which publishes the magazine, told ABC in a statement: "After issue #10 this fall there will no longer be new content - except for the end of year specials which will always be new. So starting with issue #11, the magazine will feature classic, best of and nostalgic content from the last 67 years." https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-48865342

  12. Robert Pattinson is officially the new Batman. Warner Bros. has closed a deal for the “Twilight” actor to play the Caped Crusader in “The Batman.” Matt Reeves’ upcoming superhero tentpole hits theaters on June 25, 2021. Variety first reported on May 16 that Pattinson was in negotiations for the part. The studio confirmed on Friday that Pattinson had signed a deal. Pre-production on the Warner Bros.-DC Comics pic is expected to start this summer. Reeves, the filmmaker behind the last two “Planet of the Apes” sequels, assumed “The Batman” directing duties from Ben Affleck in January 2017. Reeves will produce “The Batman” with his “Planet of the Apes” collaborator Dylan Clark. https://variety.com/2019/film/news/robert-pattinson-batman-1203230054/
  13. Maybe American kids will only have to live through one Christmas without Toys “R” Us. About a year after shuttering U.S. operations, the remnant of the defunct toy chain is set to return this holiday season by opening about a half dozen U.S. stores and an e-commerce site, according to people familiar with the matter. Richard Barry, a former Toys “R” Us executive who is now CEO of new entity Tru Kids Inc., has been pitching his vision to reincarnate the chain to toymakers, including at an industry conference this week, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public. The stores are slated to be about 10,000-square feet, roughly a third of the size of the brand’s big-box outlets that closed last year, the people said. The locations will also have more experiences, like play areas. The startup costs could be minimized with a consignment inventory model in which toymakers ship goods but don’t get paid until consumers buy them, some of the people said. A spokeswoman for Tru Kids said the company wasn’t ready to publicly share details on its U.S. strategy. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-06-21/toys-r-us-back-from-the-dead-will-open-u-s-stores-in-2019
  14. What is happening 4 people shot during Raptors rally at Nathan Phillips Square Four people were shot at a rally celebrating the Toronto Raptors' first NBA championship on Monday afternoon, according to police, amid a celebration that saw thousands of fans crowd into the city's downtown core. Police took three people into custody and recovered two firearms, Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders told reporters. Two people were arrested in connection with one shooting, Saunders said, while the third was arrested in connection with the other. He did not go into further details. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/raptors-rally-shooting-1.5178886 4 injured in 2 stabbings reported at Eaton Centre Four people have been injured, including at least one seriously, after a pair of stabbings at the Eaton Centre. Toronto police were called to the shopping centre just after 2 p.m. on Monday afternoon. The first stabbing happened at the entrance to a store during a fight with a group of men. Three men were reportedly stabbed, but their injuries were considered non-life threatening. The other incident occurred near Bay Street and one man was rushed to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries. It’s not clear yet whether the two stabbings were connected or whether they were connected to the Raptors celebrations. https://toronto.citynews.ca/2019/06/17/2-stabbings-reported-at-eaton-centre/ Toronto police investigate bomb threats against post-secondary schools Toronto police said they are responding to several bomb threats to post-secondary institutions around the city on Tuesday. Police said they were first alerted to the situation at around 8:54 a.m. “We’re investigating and working with schools to evacuate where necessary,” police said in a tweet. Ryerson University said the Chang School was closed for a police investigation but has since reopened. OCAD University said all of its buildings on campus are being evacuated and will be closed until further notice. George Brown and Humber College also received threats, police said. https://toronto.citynews.ca/2019/06/18/toronto-bomb-threat-investigation/
  15. Police are searching for a gunman who opened fire at a graduation party attended by about 75 people in Philadelphia. One person was killed and five others were injured in Sunday evening's shooting at a barbecue gathering in Paschall Playground Park, according to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross. Reports initially indicated seven injuries. Ross said that several of the victims were teens between the ages of 15 and 17 who suffered gunshot wounds to their legs. An adult victim died of their injuries. Police Capt. Jason Smith said Monday that officials are looking into the possibility of the shooting being connected with another incident that took place near the same park about a week prior. Three men were observed near the parking lot of the park, and one man described as wearing a hoodie opened fire. Hours after the shooting, the crime scene looked like a trashed party with garbage strewn about, chairs overturned and several party items left behind in a field. There was no crime scene tape and it looked as though the party-goers had just gotten up and left instead of fleeing from gunfire. Ross said the motive for the shooting is not yet known. https://start.att.net/news/read/article/cnn-one_person_was_killed_and_7_other_people_were_shot-cnn2/category/news
  16. from the Daily News What are your thoughts on this? This is incredibly problematic to me, especially as someone who struggles with mental health problems. I feel terrible she was abused so horribly, however I just cannot justify this in place of rehabilitation. Especially for a 17 year old... Legal euthanasia is usually granted for elderly or terminally ill patients. Suicide is already such an epidemic in teens and young adults. I think this sends a TERRIBLE message to those struggling with mental health issues.

  18. He’s going from sex symbol to bat symbol. Sources tell Variety that Robert Pattinson is in negotiations to play “The Batman” in Matt Reeves’ forthcoming superhero film, which hits theaters June 25, 2021. While sources say it’s not yet a done deal, Pattinson is the top choice and it’s expected to close shortly. Warner Bros. had no comment. Pre-production on the Warner Bros.-DC Comics pic is expected to start this summer. Reeves, the filmmaker behind the last two “Planet of the Apes” sequels, assumed “Batman” directing duties from Ben Affleck in January 2017 and has been developing the elusive project ever since. Affleck and Warner Bros. began discussing the actor-director leaving the Caped Crusader behind following “Justice League,” allowing Reeves to pick his own Bruce Wayne. https://variety.com/2019/film/news/robert-pattinson-batman-matt-reeves-bruce-wayne-dc-comics-1203125473/
