  1. "But at the time people don’t realise they’re embarking on a route that will lead to a destruction period. They think they’re right, they’re cheered on by jeering angry mobs, their critics are mocked. This cycle, the one we saw for example from the Treaty of Versaille, to the rise of Hitler, to the Second World War, appears to be happening again." https://medium.com/@theonlytoby/history-tells-us-what-will-happen-next-with-brexit-trump-a3fefd154714#.blqc4ze5r a great think piece that takes a hypothetical look at the future of our world based on the tragic events that occurred i

  7. We’re sad to see you leave The Voice. What else have you been up to lately? I’ve been working on new music, which I’m so excited to release this year. I can’t say too much about it just yet, but I’ve had so much fun in the studio. My cartoon series, Kuu Kuu Harajuku on Nickelodeon is going into season 2 and will be available worldwide. The Kuu Kuu Harajuku toy series is launching in US, Canada, Australia and Israel in July/ August this year. https://weekender.com.sg/w/style/gwen-stefaniwhen-i-wear-red-lipstick-i-feel-bit-animated-little-bit-drama/ We won't have to wait another de
  8. A 19-year-old rape survivor has been sentenced to 30 years in prison in El Salvador after she suffered a stillbirth due to complications during her pregnancy. Evelyn Beatriz Hernandez Cruz was convicted of "aggravated homicide" on Wednesday under what Amnesty International called El Salvador's "retrograde anti-abortion law". Local rights groups say Hernandez Cruz had been raped months before going into labour, but had not told police out of fear. She also said she did not know she was pregnant when she suffered severe abdominal pain and fainted in her bathroom in April 2016.
  9. Bravalla, the largest music festival in Sweden, has been canceled next year due to the increasing amount of sexual assaults reported at the festival. At Bravalla 2016 five rapes and over a dozen sexual assaults were reported, and in 2017 this number increased to four rapes and 23 sexual assaults. The organizers of Bravalla, which brought in over 40,000 concertgoers each year, released a statement saying that "Certain men ... apparently cannot behave. It's a shame. We have therefore decided to cancel Bravalla 2018. Words cannot describe how incredibly sad we are about this, and we most ser
  10. "The teenage son of a farmer appeared in court yesterday accused of plotting a London Bridge-style suicide attack on a major British city. The 17-year-old is charged with obtaining a knife and a hammer as he prepared to hijack a vehicle for a ‘lone wolf’ attack on Cardiff. Counter-terrorism police suspect the boy – who cannot be identified because of his age and is preparing for A-levels – was radicalised in less than a week online. The strike was feared to take place on June 30 as more than 40,000 fans descended on the Principality Stadium for a Justin Bieber concert. The teena

  14. Iraqi forces have recaptured the site of Mosul’s landmark Grand al-Nuri Mosque, according to the country’s military. The victory comes three years to the date since Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) declared itself a Caliphate at the iconic building. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said the capture marks “the end of the Daesh state,” Reuters reports. Referencing IS, Iraqi military spokesman, Brigadier General Yahya Rasool, told state TV: "Their fictitious state has fallen,” according to Reuters. The mosque and its iconic leaning minaret was destroyed by IS terr
  15. (Mods: feel free to move this to the entertainment section or merge it with the Harry Potter Book Club thread, but this is a huge pop culture event and deserves its own thread in the news section imo. ) Today marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (known as Sorcerer's Stone to American audiences). It triggered an international phenomenon spanning over the past two decades, which has included six more novels, a blockbuster film series, audiobooks, video games, a West End stage play, a spin-off in the form of Fantastic Beasts &

  17. This is...kinda weird. With four months worth of filming by Lord & Miller already done and three and a half weeks (plus five weeks of reshoots by Howard), I'm curious how the final film will turn out. Ron Howard is fine at what he does, but he's pretty much the definition of a pedestrian director. He's probably the ideal person for this sort of project, though, experienced with special effects, totally competent and totally willing to let the studio have their way. https://www.flickeringmyth.com/2017/06/ron-howard-will-direct-the-han-solo-movie-following-lord-millers-departu
  18. Otto Warmbier, the American student who was imprisoned in North Korea for more than 17 months and was returned home to Ohio last week, has died, his family said Monday. "It is our sad duty to report that our son, Otto Warmbier, has completed his journey home," his family said in part in a statement. "Surrounded by his loving family, Otto died today at 2:20 p.m." Doctors from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said last week that Warmbier, 22, was suffering from injuries related to cardiopulmonary arrest and was in a state of unresponsive wakefulness. 20. Spotify is testing a “Sponsored Song” ad for labels to promote singles on the free tier, according to a TechCrunch report. Labels can pay to have Sponsored Songs appear on playlists and can be targeted to users with listening tastes similar to the sponsored track. TechCrunch reports that a Spotify spokesperson said that if Sponsored Songs is deemed successful, it would roll out officially, but only on the free tier. Users would be able to click the opt-out button found under Sponsored Content in the Spotify settings menu. As the article points out, sponsored content would supple
  21. A recent scientific study just proved something that viewers of CNN have probably suspected for years: Journalists' brains function at a lower level than the rest of the population. A study conducted by neuroscientist Tara Swift and the London Press Club determined that "the highest functions of journalists brains were operating at a lower level than the average population, due to dehydration, self-medicating, and fueling their brains with caffeine and high-sugar foods" "However, the pressures of the job are not affecting journalists ability to endure and bounce back from adversity

  23. A New York law professor has sued a theater chain for discriminating against men with women-only screenings of “Wonder Woman.” Stephen Clark, 48, decided to sue Alamo Drafthouse after seeing a wave of complaints on the theater’s Facebook page. “There was a vibrant argument happening on Facebook,” Clark told The Washington Post. “But when the theater responded to complaints, they were pretty snide about it and willing to mock anyone who had a complaint and that really struck me.” The Albany Law School professor added, “There is also the fact that what they were doing is illegal.”
  24. Everyone knows Brooke Candy—and that’s exactly how she wants it. But not if it means anyone can tell her what to do. Fresh off a collaboration with Sia, the former stripper-turned rapper-turned fashion world icon, is ditching all the major label buzz to make a new EP that takes her back to her roots—a grimy basement where she spits filthy lyrics about sex and drugs. That’s because, no matter how many stars want to record her or designers want to dress her, Brooke Candy doesn’t know how to be anything but herself. After hypnotizing the world as some kind of feminist ninja in Grimes’ “Genes
