  1. When Albert Einstein first postulated the existence of Black Holes in his Theory of General Relativity, he was convinced that he'd made an error in his own calculations. He simply refused to believe that the phenomenon could exist in nature, despite the fact that his own calculations suggested that it not only existed in nature, but was a fundamental part of nature. Einstein was never able to explicitly disprove their existence, and in the decades since, most astronomers (save for a few on the fringe) all agree that they do exist, and that they are in abundance. The problem was that they were never able to tangibly prove their existence, with the nature of the Black Hole being that light and matter cannot escape the cosmic trap door. But the latest observations take astronomers right to its threshold for the first time, illuminating the event horizon beyond which all known physical laws collapse. The image was made from the combined efforts of the world's most powerful telescopes to peer into the heart of Messier Galaxy 87, 55 Million Light Years Away. The breakthrough image was captured by the Event Horizon telescope (EHT), a network of eight radio telescopes spanning locations from Antarctica to Spain and Chile, in an effort involving more than 200 scientists. Sheperd Doeleman, EHT director and Harvard University senior research fellow said: “Black holes are the most mysterious objects in the universe. We have seen what we thought was unseeable. We have taken a picture of a black hole.” “We have been studying black holes for so long that sometimes it’s easy to forget that none of us has seen one,” she said. “This will leave an imprint on people’s memories.” The image gives the first direct glimpse of a black hole’s accretion disc, a fuzzy doughnut-shaped ring of gas and dust that steadily “feeds” the monster within. The collaboration is still working on producing an image of the Milky Way’s black hole. “We hope to get that very soon,” said Doeleman. However, the observations do not yet reveal anything about the black hole’s inscrutable interior. “The black hole is not the event horizon, it’s something inside. It could be something just inside the event horizon, an exotic object hovering just beneath the surface, or it could be a singularity at the centre … or a ring,” said Younsi. “It doesn’t yet give us an explanation of what’s going on inside.” Source

  3. Ten miles out in the Gulf of Mexico, off the tip of Louisiana, the fumes become overwhelming. "See how it's all rainbow sheen there? So that's oil," says Ian MacDonald, who's guiding us in a tiny fishing boat that's being tossed around by 6-foot waves. MacDonald is a scientist at Florida State University where he studies oil spills. This one is not a black, sticky slick, but it stretches on for miles. And here, where the murky Mississippi River dumps into the Gulf, it's been leaking for more than 14 years. The Coast Guard has just begun to intervene to try and clean up this spill. But it faces challenges. And MacDonald sees the spill as a warning for regulators, just as the Trump administration pushes to expand offshore oil drilling in the Atlantic. A hurricane, an oil rig, an underwater mudslide The spill began in 2004, when Hurricane Ivan toppled an oil rig into the Gulf. The rig was owned by Taylor Energy, a New Orleans-based company, which managed to plug some of the 25 broken pipes, but the leak continued. more https://www.npr.org/2019/04/10/711085901/this-oil-spill-has-been-leaking-into-the-gulf-for-14-years
  4. A Chinese woman charged with bluffing her way into President Donald Trump’s Florida resort will remain in custody at least another week, a federal magistrate ruled on Monday. The woman, Yujing Zhang, was arrested after giving conflicting reasons last month for being at the Mar-a-Lago club during one of Trump’s routine weekend visits, an incident that renewed concerns about security at the club. Prosecutors told U.S. Magistrate Judge William Matthewman that Zhang could not be trusted, accusing her of lying to investigators about why she was at the property. They said a search of her hotel room turned up a device to detect hidden cameras, five cell phone SIM cards and over $8,000 in cash. “She lies to everyone she encounters,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Rolando Garcia said during a hearing in U.S. District Court in West Palm Beach, Florida. “She has no ties to the United States.” Three law enforcement and national security sources told Reuters on Monday that multiple U.S. agencies are evaluating whether the incident has any ties to Chinese intelligence and whether it exposed counter-intelligence risks. They described Zhang’s attempted entry of the club as amateurish, but said they are evaluating whether it was intended as a test of the presidential property’s security. Prosecutors previously said Zhang was carrying four cell phones, a laptop computer, an external hard drive and a thumb drive containing what investigators described as “malicious malware.” more in article https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-maralago-china/chinese-woman-arrested-at-trumps-mar-a-lago-resort-to-remain-in-custody-idUSKCN1RK12D

  6. House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal has formally requested President Donald Trump's tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service, likely launching a battle with the administration that could stretch months or even years in the courts and could shed light on the President's finances. In a letter to the IRS sent Wednesday and first obtained by CNN, Neal cites a little known IRS code in his request for six years of Trump's personal tax returns from 2013 to 2018. He also requested the tax returns of eight of Trump's business entities, a nod to escalating pressure from liberals in the caucus who have argued that Trump's personal returns wouldn't sufficiently paint a picture of the President's financial history. While the move will largely be seen by Republicans as a political escalation, Neal explained in the letter the request is part of his oversight role. Neal wrote that the committee needed Trump's tax returns to consider legislation related to the IRS's practice of auditing sitting presidents. "Under the Internal Revenue Manual, individual income tax returns of a President are subject to mandatory examination, but this practice is IRS policy and not codified in the Federal tax laws," Neal wrote in a letter to the IRS. "It is necessary for the committee to determine the scope of any such examination and whether it includes a review of underlying business activities required to be reported on the individual income tax return." In a statement to CNN, Neal stressed that the committee's request was about "policy, not politics." "My preparations were made on my own track and timeline, entirely independent of other activities in Congress and the administration," Neal said. "My actions reflect an abiding reverence for our democracy and our institutions, and are in no way based on emotion of the moment or partisanship. I trust that in this spirit, the IRS will comply with federal law and furnish me with the requested documents in a timely manner." Neal has given the IRS until April 10 to comply with the request. https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/03/politics/trump-tax-returns-house-democrats-request/index.html

  8. President Donald Trump directed his outrage at Puerto Rico on Monday night, calling the U.S. territory "a mess" and its politicians "incompetent or corrupt," after Senate Democrats clashed with their Republican counterparts over sending more disaster aid money. Senators took test votes on two competing measures -- one drafted by Senate Republicans and another passed by Democratic-led House of Representatives earlier this year -- that would allocate billions of dollars in aid to U.S. states and territories ravaged by hurricanes, flooding, wildfires and other natural disasters in recent months. But neither piece of legislation got the support required to advance to a full floor vote. Democrats shot down the GOP legislation while Republicans rejected the House-passed bill, which proposes more aid for Puerto Rico than the Republican version. Democrats said they wanted the federal government to release the money already appropriated to Puerto Rico in a previous relief package, in addition to hundreds of millions of dollars more. Republicans echoed Trump's claims that Puerto Puerto Rico has been given much more than disaster-hit states and hasn't spent the money wisely. "The Democrats today killed a Bill that would have provided great relief to Farmers and yet more money to Puerto Rico despite the fact that Puerto Rico has already been scheduled to receive more hurricane relief funding than any 'place' in history. The people of Puerto Rico," Trump posted on Twitter, "are GREAT, but the politicians are incompetent or corrupt. Puerto Rico got far more money than Texas & Florida combined, yet their government can’t do anything right, the place is a mess - nothing works." "FEMA & The Military worked emergency miracles but politicians like," Trump continued. "the crazed and incompetent Mayor of San Juan have done such a poor job of bringing the Island back to health. 91 Billion Dollars to Puerto Rico, and now the Dems want to give them more, taking dollars away from our Farmers and so many others. Disgraceful!" https://abcnews.go.com/US/trump-lashes-puerto-ricos-incompetent-corrupt-politicians-senate/story?id=62107652

  13. The father of a 6-year-old girl killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre was found dead Monday morning from an apparent suicide, police said. The body of Jeremy Richman was found in his Connecticut office building, Newtown police said. His death is the third suicide in the past week related to school massacres. Richman, 49, was the father of Avielle Richman, who was among 20 children killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Police said they "will not disclose the method or any other details of the death," other than it does not appear to be suspicious. Parkland grieves 2 suicides a year after massacre In Florida, mourners are grieving the death of Sydney Aiello, a 2018 graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who died by suicide last week. She survived the attack on Valentine's Day 2018 that killed 17 people at the school in Parkland. more in the link https://www-m.cnn.com/2019/03/25/us/sandy-hook-victim-father-jeremy-richman-suicide/index.html?r=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.google.com%2F

  15. A former high school student who survived last year's Parkland, Florida, shooting massacre has died from an apparent suicide, according to officials. Sydney Aiello, 19, died on Sunday at her home in Coconut Creek, Florida, from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Broward County medical examiner's office. Aiello graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018, months after a shooting at the school left 17 students and staff dead. Her mother, Cara Stein-Aiello, told CBS's Miami station that her daughter struggled with survivor's guilt and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Efforts by ABC News to reach Stein-Aiello were not immediately successful. Aiello was a friend of 18-year-old Parkland massacre victim Meadow Pollack, said Pollack's brother, Hunter Pollack. "It was completely devastating to bury another beautiful young person in Parkland today," Pollack tweeted Friday. "Our community is going through tragedy again. Please keep the Aiello Family in your prayers. "Rest in peace, Sydney. Take care of Meadow for me," he wrote. It was completely devastating to bury another beautiful young person in Parkland today. Our community is going through tragedy again. Please keep the Aiello Family in your prayers. https://abcnews.go.com/US/sydney-aiello-19-year-parkland-survivor-dies-suicide/story?id=61869606

  20. Today in "wild GTA highways happenings," we have dashcam footage that makes a flying hunk of wood look like an overfed mosquito. The video in question, captured near Highway 404 and 16th Avenue in Markham on Tuesday afternoon, starts as most dashcam videos do: with nothing but open road in front of the vehicle it's attached to. Seconds into the clip, a small, low-flying plane slides quickly across the driver's path. Its wing tip can be seen scuffing the road as it comes within inches of the motorist before jutting out of frame, slamming into a fence, and stopping in a ditch. https://www.blogto.com/city/2019/03/dashcam-video-shows-plane-nearly-missing-car-markham/
  21. "Alabama’s only federally-recognized Native American tribe is stepping forward to cover the funerary costs of all those who fell victim to the tornado in Lee County last week. The Poarch Band of Creek Indians is making a $184,000 donation to pay for the funerals of all 23 tornado victims, as confirmed by CNN with the coroner’s office earlier this week. Since the tribe was originally going to be splitting the memorial costs with another unidentified Alabama business, the Natives upped their donation from $50,000 after the business-backed out of the agreement. “It is at times of greatest need that we often see our communities coming together to help one another – this is one of those times,” said Stephanie A. Bryan, the Tribal Chair and CEO of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected.” CNN says that other local philanthropists will be making personal multi-thousand donations of their own in order to help affected families as well."
