  1. Wtf, this is so stupid. Calling someone "parent 1" is like talking to a robot.... French schools are to replace the words “mother” and “father” with “parent 1” and “parent 2” under an amendment to a law passed this week. Supporters of the change say it will stop discrimination against same sex parents but critics argue it “dehumanises” parenthood, is “ugly” and could lead to rows over who gets to be “parent 1”. The amendment was passed by MPs on Tuesday night as part of a wider so-called law to build “a school of trust”, which among other things also makes attendance compulsory for all three-year-olds. “This amendment aims to root in law children’s family diversity in administrative forms submitted in school,” said Valérie Petit, MP for the majority REM party of President Emmanuel Macron. Ms Petit, from the Nord department, said that the words mother and father, on all school documents such as pertaining to the canteen or authorising children to go on excursions, no longer took into account the recently-passed gay marriage law, nor the existence of same sex parents. She added: “We have families who find themselves faced with tick boxes stuck in rather old-fashioned social and family models. For us, this article is a measurement of social equality.” Socialist MP Joaquim Pueyot also praised the reform as “a question of respect and dignity”. “You cannot imagine the consequences when children don’t feel treated like the others,” he said. FCPE, France’s biggest parent’s federation, called “a very good thing”. “It echos the (recent) law on fighting harassment because often situations of child harassment target kids who don’t fit the current criteria.” But the move angered the mainstream conservative Republicans, or LR, party and the far-Right. Conservative MP Xavier Breton said: “When I hear people say this is an old-fashioned model, I would remind people that today among unions celebrated, civil or marital, some 95 per cent are man-woman couples.” Conservative MP Fabien Di Filippo denounced a “frightening ideology, which in the name of limitless egalitarianism promotes removing points of reference, including those regarding the family”. The idea of replacing mother and father by parent 1 and 2 was already mooted during the debate leading to the 2013 law legalising same sex marriage but was not inscribed into legislation at the time. Indeed, Jean-Michel Blanquer, the current education minister, had opposed the amendment on the grounds that this need not be a legislative matter. Eric Ciotti, another Right-wing MP, said: “They swore this was fantasy, that it would never happen. The negation of gender deconstructs the balance of our society.” Traditionalists were appalled. Ludovine de la Rochère, president of the Manif Pour Tous organisation that opposes gay marriage, called it “totally dehumanising”. “Children need bearings,” she said. Meanwhile Marine Le Pen, head of the far-Right National Rally, said “the mask has fallen” from the Macron camp regarding its view of society. Jordan Bardella, head of RN’s European election list, said the move was part of an attempt to “ideologically condition children”, even claiming that “totalitarianism is not far off”. The Right wasn’t the only camp to express scepticism. AFDH, the French association for same sex parents, said that while it welcomed providing a way for such parents to be “included in forms”, it warned it could create a “parental hierarchy”. “Who is ‘parent number 1’ and who is ‘parent number 2’?,” asked AFDH president Alexandre Urwicz, who called for more “inclusive” forms including the boxes “father, mother and legal representative”. Jean-Michel Aphatie, editorialist on Europe 1 radio, said that while the change was logical to keep step with “administrative reality”, turning parents into numbers was “very administrative and very ugly”. The amendment could yet be rejected by the majority-Right Senate but will then return to the National Assembly for a final reading. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/02/14/schools-france-replace-mother-father-parent-1-2-controversial/
  2. Over a dozen western songs have been banned from being played in daylight hours by Indonesia's conservative West Java province. A list of 85 songs, including 17 western songs, has been singled out by the West Java broadcasting commission for containing what was deemed to be adult and offensive content. This includes Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You", Ariana Grande's "Love Me Harder", and Bruno Mars's "That's What I Like". A memorandum issued on Tuesday, 26 February warned that the listed songs should only be played or broadcast between 10pm and 3am. “In this case, what is banned is not the songs, but the lyrics of the songs that contain *****graphy, *****graphic association, and obscenity,” Rahmat Arifin, deputy head of the commission, told Tempo.co. The full list of Western songs is as follows: “Love Me Harder” – Ariana Grande feat. The Weeknd “Wild Thoughts” – DJ Khaled feat. Rihanna “Mr. Brightside” – The Killers “Dusk Till Dawn” – ZAYN “Let Me” – ZAYN “Sangria Wine” – Pharrell & Camila Cabello “Bad Things” – Machine Gun Kelly & Camila Cabello “Plot Twist” – Sigrid “Shape of You” – Ed Sheeran “Overdose” – Agnez Mo feat. Chris Brown “Makes Me Wonder” – Maroon 5 “That’s What I Like” – Bruno Mars “Versace On The Floor” – Bruno Mars “**** it, Don’t Want You Back” – Eamon “Midsummer Madness” – 88rising “Till it Hurts” – Yellow Claw “Your Song” – Rita Ora https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/feb/27/pornographic-songs-by-ed-sheeran-and-ariana-grande-banned-in-indonesian-province

  7. With Aquaman being a billion-dollar hit, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. wants more waterworks from its DC Comics hero. But while any discussions of a direct sequel have not engaged on any sort of serious level by the studio, director James Wan or star Jason Momoa, with all the players seemingly intent on taking a breather and their time, there is talk of a spinoff. Warners has hired newbie scribes Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to pen a horror-tinged script centered on the Trench, the deadly amphibious creatures seen attacking the hero and his love, Mera, in Aquaman. Wan and Peter Safran will produce the project, titled The Trench, which would be much more modestly budgeted than the normal DC superhero tentpole. The Trench creatures are rather recent arrivals to the Aquaman lore, having been introduced in the comics only in 2011 when DC did a revamp of its entire publishing line. They are revealed to be part of the kingdom of Atlantis but when it sunk, inhabitants who were cut off from other survivors and evolved into ravenous monsters. Details of the take are being kept submerged but it will be set in the kingdom of the Trench and will not feature the main cast of Aquaman. Gardner and Fitzgerald were assistants at Bad Robot, JJ Abrams’ production shingle, during the filmmaker’s Super 8 period. They previously wrote a submarine thriller titled The Volos. The duo is repped by WME. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/aquaman-spinoff-works-1184285

  9. Did you know that wool kills? PETA and our international affiliates have exposed cruelty to sheep in 99 wool-industry operations on four continents. Workers violently punched them in the face, stomped and stood on their heads and necks, threw and cut them, and beat them on the head with clippers. Why do people do that to these sensitive animals? Well, shearers are often paid by the number of sheep they shear, rather than by the hour, so they have an incentive to work quickly and recklessly. It's common for them to cut off large swaths of skin from the sheep while they rush through shearing them. In the commercial wool industry—from which mainstream stores such as Forever 21 obtain wool—none of the millions of sheep are safe. Cruelty to sheep is the norm in the wool industry despite any #FakeAssurances that companies and industry groups give. No company should be profiting from animal abuse. 10. HMV has been saved from administration for a second time in six years. 100 of the entertainment retailer's stores have been purchased by Doug Putman, owner of Canadian chain Sunrise Records. The winning bid for HMV is undisclosed. 27 of the store's branches have not been saved and will close indefinitely, resulting in 455 job losses. 1,487 jobs have however been retained, with a further 122 secured in warehouses. Four of the sites staying afloat are under the Fopp sister brand. "We are delighted to acquire the most iconic music and entertainment business in the UK and add nearly 1,500 employees to our growing team," explained Mr. Putman. "By catering to music and entertainment lovers, we are incredibly excited about the opportunity to engage customers with a diverse range of physical format content, and replicate our success in Canada." https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/hmv-rescued-from-administration-by-canadian-firm-sunrise-records-and-entrepreneur-doug-putman__25485/
  11. The Motion Picture Academy, responding to a widespread backlash to its initial plan to only spotlight two of the best original song nominees on the Oscarcast, is now planning to have all five nominated songs performed on the Feb. 24 show, Variety has learned. Earlier today, the Academy tweeted that Jennifer Hudson would perform “I’ll Fight,” the Diane Warren-penned song from the documentary “Rbg.” A subsequent tweet announced a “spoiler” that “The Place Where the Lost Things Go” would be “performed by a surprise special guest.” Previously, the plan had been to include only the top 10 hits “Shallow,” from “A Star Is Born,” and “All the Stars,” from “Black Panther.” Producers last week told representatives for the remaining three nominees that there wasn’t time to perform all five songs in a streamlined show. But now, sources tell Variety that offers have gone out to reps from all five to perform the songs. https://variety.com/2019/music/news/oscars-invite-all-five-best-song-nominees-1203125178/

  15. Only two of this year’s five Oscar-nominated songs may be performed live on the Academy Awards show Feb. 24, Variety has learned. Multiple sources tell Variety that the two biggest chart hits — Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “All the Stars” from “Black Panther” and Lady Gaga’s “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” — are the two chosen by Academy execs and show producers for performance on the telecast. The other three — “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns,” “I’ll Fight” from “RBG” and “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” — would likely be acknowledged only during the announcement of the song nominees. Rumors of their exclusion is already causing consternation among members of the music branch as well as among those nominees’ respective camps. The Academy declined specific comment except to say that no decision on song performances has been made yet. A source with knowledge of the Academy’s thinking says cutting songs is less a knock on the nominees than something long discussed as part of this year’s mandate to limit the show to three hours. The Academy has hinted that several Oscars (for so-called “craft” categories such as sound editing and sound mixing) will be presented during commercials, an already controversial move. 17. Spotify is getting ready to enable a block feature in its apps to mute artists you don’t want to hear from. Spotify is currently testing the “don’t play this artist” feature in its latest iOS app, and The Verge has been able to test the new block functionality ahead of its release soon. The feature simply lets you block an entire artist from playing, so that songs from the artist will never play from a library, playlist, chart list, or even radio stations on Spotify. The block feature works on songs by an individual artist, but it doesn’t currently apply to tracks that an artist is featured on. Thurrott first spotted the feature, and notes that Spotify originally decided not to offer blocking “after serious consideration” back in 2017. Spotify has now reversed that decision. source: https://www.theverge.com/2019/1/21/18191332/spotify-block-feature-mute-artists-music
