Two alleged members of the Ku Klux Klan reportedly threatened people at a pro-LGBTQ+ rights rally in Kentucky on June 3 — one of whom even pulled a gun on the small crowd. Police on the scene in Corbin, however, didn’t arrest them, according to a police report obtained by news site Raw Story. The outlet reports that one of the men handing out KKK recruitment cards was identified in the report as Kenneth Hutton, 44. He’d previously worked for Corbin’s city government. “He quit about a month ago,” Marlon Sams, Corbin’s city manager, told Raw Story. The other man was identifie

Latvian lawmakers on Wednesday picked the country’s long-serving and popular foreign minister, a strong backer of Ukraine, as its new head of state in a tight vote. The 100-seat Saeima legislature elected Edgars Rinkevics, the country’s top diplomat since 2011, as president to serve for a four-year term. He received 52 votes, one vote more than required to win. Incumbent Egils Levits, Latvia’s head of state since 2019, didn’t seek reelection. Rinkevics, who announced in 2014 that he is “proudly” homosexual, will be the first openly gay president in the Baltic nations — all former Sov

LGBT Japanese court rules against same-sex marriage ban
Chris posted a topic in World News & Discussion
A court in Japan has ruled that not allowing same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. On Tuesday (30 May), Nagoya District Court became the second to rule against Japan’s banning of same-sex marriage, despite the country’s prime minister Fumio Kishida claiming the ban wasn’t discriminatory to the LGBTQ+ community. Japan is the only G7 nation that does not recognise same-sex marriage. The ruling – welcomed by activists and supporters outside the court – follows Japan’s main opposition, the Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP), submitting a bill calling for same-sex marriage to be -

Chris posted a topic in World News & Discussion
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ′ administration is moving to forbid classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in all grades, expanding the controversial law critics call “Don’t Say Gay” as the Republican governor continues to focus on cultural issues ahead of his expected presidential run. The proposal, which would not require legislative approval, is scheduled for a vote next month before the state Board of Education and has been put forward by the state Education Department, both of which are led by appointees of the governor. The rule chan -
Ugandan lawmakers on Tuesday approved some of the world's harshest anti-gay laws, making some crimes punishable by death and imposing up to 20 years in prison for people identifying as LGBTQ+. The new legislation constitutes a further crackdown on LGBTQ+ people in a country where same-sex relations were already illegal -- punishable by life imprisonment. It targets an array of activities, and includes a ban on promoting and abetting homosexuality as well as conspiracy to engage in homosexuality, Reuters reported. According to the bill, the death penalty can be invoked for cases invol

Transgender youth may soon no longer be able to access gender-affirming health care. A ban on medical transitioning for minors has passed the Tennessee General Assembly and is on its way to the governor’s desk. The bill would mean no hormone therapy, no surgeries and no puberty blockers — with two exceptions. One is for intersex kids who aren’t easily assigned a gender at birth. Another would be a temporary exception for trans kids who are already taking hormones before the law goes into effect July 1. After that, minors have until March of 2024 to stop their treatments. Those nine m

"Oliver H," a New York City drag king with a self-described, rainbow-colored "mohawk to the sky," has read to kids at dozens of Drag Story Hour events, many of which spurred protests. But he knew he'd better add extra flowers when he painted on his beard for his December 29 reading at a public library in Queens. Outside the library, some three-dozen Proud Boys, neo-Nazis, and religious activists were shouting "groomer!" And more than 200 rainbow-clad counter-protesters were banging drums and singing Lady Gaga's "Born This Way." "I was like, you know what? This is going to be a

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R) administration has filed a complaint against an Orlando foundation over a drag holiday event it hosted in which minors were allowed to attend the show. The complaint, which was filed Friday, alleges that the Orlando Philharmonic Plaza Foundation violated state law in allowing for a person to “commit lewd or lascivious exhibition” in the presence of an individual who is less than 16 years old. It states that the foundation hosted a show called “A Drag Queen Christmas” on Dec. 28 and sold alcoholic drinks during it. The complaint, which the Florida-bas

A rainbow-coloured tower was removed from a children’s playground in Uganda after parents complained about its supposed pro-LGBTQ+ symbolism. Fabrice Brad Rulinda, mayor of Entebbe, said the climbing frame had been painted as part of ‘a bid to refurbish the children’s park […] and create a safe environment for our children’. He went on: ‘For years, the children of Uganda have only understood the rainbow as a beautiful arch of colours and biblically it reflects the majesty of God. ‘It is unfortunate that certain movements have decided to use the rainbow to represent and reflect

"We hope our government will recognize LGBTQI people as equal as soon as possible." A bill banning hate speech towards LGBTQ people has been voted for unanimously by Ukraine. The media regulation bill was approved on 15 December in what one LGBTQ rights activist called “a big step for Ukraine”. Olena Shevchenko, the chair of Ukrainian LGBTQ and intersex rights group Insight, also told The Washington Blade that, “We hope our government will recognize LGBTQI people as equal as soon as possible.” It follows a commitment from President Volodymyr Zelensky that once the war with

The first openly transgender woman slated for execution in the US is appealing to Missouri’s governor for mercy, citing mental health struggles. Lawyers for Amber McLaughlin, 49, on Monday asked Republican Gov. Mike Parson to spare her life before her Jan. 3 execution. She was convicted of killing her 45-year-old ex-girlfriend Beverly Guenther on Nov. 20, 2003. Guenther was raped and stabbed to death in St. Louis County. In a phone interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Monday, McLaughlin described her looming execution as “a sad thing.” “I don’t agree with it,” she sai

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law on Monday a sweeping ban on the positive portrayal of gay relationships in books, films, the media and the Internet, regardless of age. The ban on “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations” expands Russia’s 2013 law that prohibited the promotion of homosexuality to children. The new legislation now makes it illegal to present positive images to adults of gay relationships in media and advertising. Vyacheslav Volodin, a Putin ally and speaker of the State Duma lower house of parliament, defended the measure as needed to fight agai
