We all know that Rihanna shits on everyone in radio airplay, but when it specifically comes to Top 40 radio, even though Rihanna gets huge love there too, it seems to come down to Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. So the question is, who's the bigger queen on Top 40 radio?

Katy started off strong with 2 #1s in her first era, but then Gaga SCALPED in 2009/2010 when her first six singles went to #1. In the last year though, the tables have switched drastically. Katy struck back hard with 5 #1 singles off of her sophomore album, while Gaga took a backseat on "Born This Way" like how Katy did on her first album. So we have;

Lady Gaga

Just Dance-#1

Poker Face-#1

LoveGame-#1

Paparazzi-#1

Bad Romance-#1

Telephone-#1

Alejandro-#4

Born This Way-#1

Judas-#14

The Edge of Glory-#3

7#1s, 9 top tens total, 1 miss

Katy Perry-

I Kissed a Girl-#2

Hot N Cold-#1

Thinking of You-#18

Waking up in Vegas-#1

California Gurls-#1

Teenage Dream-#1

Firework-#1

E.T-#1

Last Friday Night-#1* (it will be next week)

7 #1s, 8 top tens, 1 miss

Gaga is ahead by one single, but in all honesty, Katys #1s have been much bigger than Gaga's #1s. I bet if we were to add up total airplay, Katy would win since her singles like "Firework" "E.T" and "Teenage Dream" have had huge longevity, meanwhile Gaga's singles tend to collapse really quickly (like LoveGame, Paparazzi, Born This Way).

My vote is for Katy as the Queen of Top 40.

Interesting thread. In terms of pop radio airplay, I would say that radio has been extremely receptive to Katy, she's going to collect her 5th #1 from this era alone. (It's worth mentioning that Katy also receives strong support from other formats even though her singles have been very pop.) Gaga's "Poker Face" and "Bad Romance" have become radio staples, and will continue to receive strong recurrent airplay, but overall Katy wins.

In terms of album sales, Katy perry looses against GaGa. but in the battle of the Top 40's Katy Perry ties GaGa in terms of charts and radio performance. Unless Perry is able to defeat "Party rock Anthem" and claim her Number 5 on The Hot 100 and tie MJ's record.
