An 8-year-old Ivory Coast boy was discovered by authorities unharmed but scared inside a suitcase as he was apparently being smuggled through a Spanish enclave in north Africa in order to be reunited with his father in the Canary Islands, the BBC reports

The child was in the care of a 19-year-old woman, according to the BBC. Authorities alleged to El Pais that the boy's father had paid the woman to smuggle the boy through Cueta, a Spanish enclave east of Morocco, to the father's home in Gran Canaria, part of Spain's Canary Islands off of the Moroccan coast.

The boy was discovered by a scanner as he and the woman moved through Cueta, according to ABC News. The woman was initially reluctant to put the suitcase in the scanner, raising the agents' suspicions, they told El Pais

"She seemed to hesitate, and it looked as though she didn't want to come through the border," a police spokesperson told Efe, a Spanish news agency. "At first we thought that there could be drug packages, but gradually discovered that it was a human body."

Officials at the Red Cross tested the boy and found that he wasn't seriously injured, according to El Pais.

His father, who El Pais reports returned to Ivory Coast to help bring his son with him back to Gran Canaria, was intercepted by Cueta authorities on his own return trip an hour and a half later.

During questioning, officials said they showed him a photo of the boy and asked, "Is this your son?" The man collapsed on the spot, officials told El Pais.

He, and the 19-year-old he allegedly hired, have been incarcerated by a Cueta judge, according to the paper. The child is in the custody of Cueta officials as they work to locate other relatives.
