Is Mariah Carey a one hit wonder?

She has always played it safe. She has always done R&B and her music always had the same exact formula. Her early songs are impossible to tell apart, besides very few exceptions.

Now, I'm asking you again: What has Mariah brought to the table that is any form worth to be remembered except for her singing style? um1

Anyone who knows music will tell you what Mariah has bought to the table other than her voice.

Played it safe pfft. have you any idea about the chord progressions, key changes, key signatures, musical styling; layering vocals, octave unisons, perfectly notated riffs and runs, etc in her music? And lets not even get started on the lyrics hun. 5 octaves of vocal range is useless if you don't match that with unprecedented musicality. This thread is pointless. And its also pointless to argue with someone who hasn't even heard her music thoroughly.

Um...same formula, meaning: similar production, similar themes/topics, overall not too different sonically.

Moo fans have got to accept and realize that she IS and always fucking has been LOCAL. No one outside of her main markets know her, the type of music she made really wasn't too popular here like...ever + she's boring.

Have you heard any of her albums?

The premise of the OP is that the solo artist with the most #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 is a one hit wonder dead2

Mariah has sold what, 200 million plus records? 18 #1 Hits,  6 number one albums. She is literally second to Madonna and only Madonna in overall success for females. Say what you want about her being local or her hits being forgotten, because that's a matter of opinion. But I can promise you this, one hit wonder is something that she is not dead2

She is literally the opposite of a one hit wonder and the fact that people are mistaking her flopping after a long, solid 25+ year career for being a one hit wonder is literally the funniest thing that I've seen all day

In fact, I have actually educated myself and tortured myself to listen to her discography. It put me faster to sleep than Propofol put my fav MJ (who, if you compare him and Madonna to Mariah on a WW scale are both MILES ahead of her) to sleep.

From an US standpoint. rip3 My god, check her discography...a large part of her singles barely had any impact outside of the US. Mariah fans literally live in this dream world were she's skinny, hasn't lost her voice and is this world-wide phenomenon that everybody knows. Most ppl from Europe and a lot of other parts of the world don't know more than two Mariah songs maybe.

She's not in even in top 3

When it comes to album sales

1. Madonna

2. Celine

3. Whitney

4. Mariah

When it comes to touring only Celine comes close to Madonna.

When it comes to singles (there's a world outside US) only 80s/early 90s Whitney comes close to Madonna.

Sis, no1curr about sales though

You can sell a shit ton of albums and be local as fuck, like Manriah. Make a survey on this forum and ask ppl how many Madonna, how many MJ, Tranet and Moo songs they know. You'd see that most ppl probably know Madge and MJ songs. Their stuff actually cracked most international markets and their impact on pop music and pop culture are undeniable. That's why Madge can still sell out WW and have one of the best selling albums this year and Moo and Tranet can't.

Well saying that Mariah is only behind Madonna is delusional. Celine and Whitney were everything but local, i had to bring sales to point that out no1curr

When it comes to overall impact on music industry. big four: The Beatles, Elvis, MJ and Madonna (also 4 best selling acts of all time) are untouchable and no one comes even close to them or ever will. Putting Mariah there next to Madonna is blasphemy

Yes, the same RnB that even your fave tried for in 1994 after the arrival of Mariah's melisma over radio

25 T10s in NZ

17 T10s in AUS

9 T10s in France

Of course it is, cause despite RnB being local as hell, she still managed to be highly successful

I wonder how much Madge would've sold if she tried only RnB

And I never said she wasn't successful, but if you compare her to the other 3 females she's behind. She never even had ww #1 single like My heart will go on, I will always love you and too many to count Madonna's singles.

I'm sorry but acting like Mariah was 'indie' (because 'she only tried RnB') or whatever is just bullshit, her sound was THE sound of 90s and mid 00s

Out of 'big 4' females only Madonna is pure pop, while other 3 were/are AC/rnb divas.

Only MJ, Madonna is probably aprox 40m records ahead of Mariah.

And who the fuck cares about irrelevant European countries when she became the fastest selling female artist of all time in the US and is the best selling foreign artist in Japan, the world's biggest music industries?

Mariah Carey has had some impressive success in the 90s but unfortunately faded into irrelevancy after 2005. Looking back, there is really just one song in her discography that is well remembered by t

There's dragging, and there's dragging yourself. I think you're doing the latter.

honestly she's local. all of her hits are forgotten and AIWFCIY is totally local.
