why did you think it was pretentious? im just curious jj2

First of all, it's terribly written. It sounds extremely amateurish. The verses, especially:

You tell me "it gets better, it gets better,
in time"
You say I'll pull myself together, pull it together,
"You'll be fine"

The way it's written, her awful Koons voice make this song so fucking melodramatic and unlistanable, especially for non fans. Think, Dance in the Dark which talks about a man putting a woman down, self-hatred and insecurities uses a great metaphor to go about it. It's less try-hard and obvious and shows what a great songwriter she actually is.

At this point I think even Swine could have served as a better song to promote the subject matter. jj1

her voice is not that deep and gross and congested all the time orangu1 maybe it's the cigarettes who knows, but the Koons voice is not appealing by any means

also the proposal of Nope is not helping your argument because it's p forgettable on good days and borders on being awful and unlistenable on bad days orangu1

i dont see how having "amateur" lyrics make it pretentious though. i think it would be pretentious if it was hard to decipher, or had tons of impossible metaphors. i actually like that it's quite straight forward and shows the whole topic from a different perspective, without it being hard to understand. I mean, it's not my go-to song/ballad from her (i prefer the godly Speechless, or even Dope alex1 ), but I think it gets its job done rather effectively. Even the vice president, who speaks out regularly against sexual abuse, said the song is more powerful than any speech he's ever given alex1 im not saying your view is wrong, either. i just dont think its that bad of a song, and i think it deserves the recognition its been getting alex1

Thank you. orangu1

To be honest none of her released ballads except Brown Eyes can compare to the amazingness of the stuff that remains hidden in her unreleased catalogue:

Wonderful

Oh Well

Words

Let Love Down

Fooled Me Again

Blueberry Kisses

I don't know if you became a fav during the ARTPOP era but her voice wasn't like that AT ALL until she decided to do these operette low vocals that just don't fit her tone. Listen to Red and Blue and her earlier material. Her voice was even more powerful and crystal clear.

Idk I find the straight-forwardness pretentious and the song is just depressive. I couldn't give less of a shit what Obama has to say about the song. The melody is unappealing, the lyrics are basic and are giving me "Do you ever feel like a plastic bag" teas. The art in writing music to me is making a song relatable and displaying a certain subject matter through metaphors. A song needs to be sonically appealing and create harmony between words, melody and production, in my opinion. Especially ballads.

I personally can't stand Björk's music for the same reason. She has an unappealing voice, her songs are just random words that are hard to identify due to her accent and her production is all over the place sometimes. I guess I'm conservative when it comes to music.

Well being butthurt is clouding your vision. There are many people who find this relatable. You sound stupid trying to pass this off as pretentious. It's a song about overcoming rape. It's a serious topic that she gets right to the point. When people talk about their rape, they don't waste time with metaphors. They get to the knit and grit. That's the point of the song. It's not trying to be a pretty ballad. The entire purpose is it for it to be ugly - to make people realize that in order to overcome their struggles, you have to admit them and let it shape you. It's depressive, but it's about reaching your lowest point that makes you stronger.

The target audience isn't you, so I get that you don't like it, but don't try to undermine it's purpose with your own self - conflicted bias. There's a difference between not liking a song and shaming an artist for giving people an outlet.

Fockus. Trashy repeat of Problem. Pretty Girls was pretty awful but I still bop to it tbh. jj2

Agreed but in reverse - both are trashy rehashes of songs Iggy Azalea features on but I still bop to Focus jj2

Admit it, it's only cause Focus is still playing on radios. jj2 Pretty Girls remain superior.
