THE UPS AND DOWNS OF 2016 SO FAR
FROM CONGRATULATIONS TO CONTROVERSY

Picture

We are already a quarter of the way through 2016 and so much has already happened in the last few months. From record-breaking releases to Twitter turmoil; controversial comments to nipple-baring nonsense – there’s been a lot to take in recently. Caliber took a look back the ups and downs of music moments that had the world talking in the New Year.

HIGHLIGHT
Black Ambition smashes records
Beyoncé’s albums, especially in the last few years, have seen massive numbers upon their release and most people expected her latest album ‘Black Ambition’ to be no different. But very few were prepared for the explosive sales of BA, which debuted at #1 with over 5 millions copies sold. The album shattered sales records round the world, including the record for most pre-orders with over 1.7 million. Can Queen Bey top that with her next album?

DISAPPOINTMENT
Lindsay is overshadowed by controversy
Oh, Lindsay Lohan. Talk about a celebrity whose bad times outshine the good. After a rocky few years marred by mugshots and court appearances, the once-beloved child actress decided to give music another go and boy, did she. Now considered one of the top popstars on the scene right now, Lindsay has made a huge effort to rebuild her image as a talented artist. The hard work paid off when Lohan was awarded the Icon Award at this year’s Grammy Awards. However, the singer received a wave of backlash, with many claiming she didn’t deserve such an honor amongst accusations of her buying the award. Fast-forward a couple of months and Lindsay found herself in similar situation when it was announced when would perform at the Superbowl Halftime show. As if it were bad enough having the public turn against you, Lindsay’s peers soon followed. Big names such as Selena Gomez and Lorde called out the ‘Too Young To Die’ singer after she reportedly cancelled Rihanna’s guest appearance at the Halftime Show, prompting the hashtag ‘#JealousLindsay’ to go viral. Talk about a ‘dream melt’…

HIGHLIGHT
Rihanna become an industry force
Looking back on it now, it seems as Rihanna’s recent rise back to the top really came out of nowhere. With an already impressive career spanning seven albums and countless awards, 2016 looks to be Rih’s best year yet with the highly-anticipated release of her album number-eight, NEO. ‘Velvet Tears’ quickly became one of the most successful singles of the year so far, but Rihanna was only getting started. ‘Only If Four A Night’, a sold-out, four-night residency soon followed, earning the singer another big paycheck. Not stopping there, the singer broke records with her issue of Vogue and partnered with Beats Electronics to release an exclusive line of headphones, which also proved a huge commercial success. Rih was a top contender to perform at this year’s Superbowl Halftime show, however she lost the spot to Lindsay Lohan amidst controversy. Artists such as Selena Gomez, Lorde, Cheryl and Kesha have all been vocal in their support for Rihanna. But it wasn’t Rihanna’s first experience with controversy in 2016, which brings us to…

DISSAPOINTMENT
Nipplegate/The Oscar Concert Gala cancellation
Oh, what could have been… Rihanna was well on course on her rise to the top, headlining a monumental pre-Academy Awards event that would bring together some of music’s biggest names for one night only. Lindsay Lohan, Florence Welch, Lorde and Sky Ferreira were only a few of the artists set to perform at the Gala - that was, until it was cancelled at the last minute. What cancelled the event, you say? A technical difficulty? A natural disaster? Beyoncé staging an impromptu concert down the road? Nope, it was Rihanna’s nipples. The ‘Velvet Tears’ singer showed up on the red carpet in a dress that revealed her breasts beneath some sheer fabric and ABC shut things down quicker than Taylor Swift could release another single. Rihanna certainly paid for her stunt, receiving overwhelming backlash that threatened her promotional plans, but once again her friends had her back. Artists like Florence Welch showed support for Rih, instead criticizing the media’s attack on woman’s bodies. You go girl!

HIGHLIGHT
Fresh wave of talent
In the last few years, we’ve seen some big stars quite literally take over. The likes of Lana Del Rey, Sky Ferreira, Beyoncé and Mariah Carey became familiar faces at the top of the charts and it seemed as if that wasn’t going to change any time soon. Sure, Beyoncé has spent a lot of time at #1 this year, but there’s been a refreshing wave of artists coming to claim some chart supremacy. Kelly Clarkson, Belinda and Ariana Grande are just a few names that have emerged recently to see big success on the charts, while other up-and-comers like Christina Millian and Sean O’Pry could be next in line.

DISSAPOINTMENT
Delay, delays and more delays
2016 is set to be a big year for music, with big releases from Beyoncé, Mariah Carey and Lindsay Lohan having already impacted the charts. Anticipated albums from Rihanna and Lorde have the future looking bright, but this year has already suffered from its fair share of delays. Taylor Swift finally released her album ‘Beautifully Disturbed’ to a #1 debut, but with numbers less than half that of Lindsay or 300k short of Mariah’s recent effort, you can’t help but feel like Taylor fell short of her potential. A somewhat-chaotic release history in recent months didn’t help the singer’s campaign, which quickly skipped onto new singles and changed plans much to the confusion of fans. Another victim of delays is Cheryl, who, following an opening spot on Sam Smith’s huge Europe tour gained some much-deserved exposure, was looking like a serious threat on the music scene. Her upcoming album ‘Through My Eyes’ was scheduled for a March release but it was delayed to May after singer went into rehab. Some sources have claimed the album was pushed back to avoid competing with Mariah’s ‘Clean Slate’.

HIGHLIGHT
Men return to the pop scene
Pop music in the last few years has been lead by women. While it’s an amazing sight to see powerful female representation in an industry that has long been dominated by a male presence, it seemed as if pop was becoming a complete no-go zone for men. However, following the success of Brandon Flowers last year, we’ve seen an influx of male artists returning to the charts. Harry Styles ended 2015 on a high and hasn’t stopped since, with 2016 looking like it will also be the best year of his career since leaving One Direction to go solo. Sam Smith released his sophomore album ‘Paradise’ to critical and commercial success, before embarking on one of the year’s biggest tours, The Finding Paradise Tour. Sean O’Pry has also started to make a name for himself, learning from label-mate and close friend Beyoncé in the lead up to his debut release.

DISSAPOINTMENT
Mariah fails to match success of Atavism
Last year, Mariah Carey proved why she was a music legend when she released her acclaimed album ‘Atavism’, preceded by the massive hit single, ‘The Unholy Alliance’. Since then, fans have been anticipating the follow up, which Mariah announced would be titled ‘Clean Slate’. She faced some hurdles in the lead up to the album’s release, when the X-Men soundtrack single ‘Apocalypse’ struggled to find it’s place on the charts, leading to another single, ‘Hypnotizing’ being promoted instead. ‘Hypnotizing’ failed to break the top 5, with the album’s title track suffering a similar fate upon it’s release. ‘Clean Slate’ debuted at #1 with 945k copies sold after it’s surprise early release, which, while still impressive, is a far cry from the numbers pulled by Lindsay and Beyoncé’s most recent releases.

MOST ANTICIPATED MOMENTS OF 2016

RIHANNA RELEASING ‘NEO’
Rihanna’s eighth studio album is without a doubt the most anticipated album to come this year. The ‘Velvet Tears’ singer has impressed with her explosive return to the top of the music industry in recent months, becoming one of the most talked about people of 2016. All eyes on you now, Rih…

BELINDA’S REBIRTH
Another artist to make a name for herself, albeit in a more slow-burning way, is Spanish-born, Mexican singer Belinda. From singles to albums, performances to tours, interviews to appearances, Belinda has worked hard to find success in 2016. She is getting ready to release her upcoming album ‘Rebirth’ this year and she is definitely on Caliber’s radar as one to watch.

NEW ARTISTS?
As we mentioned above, 2016 has seen a number of new names climbing the charts and it has us wondering if the best is yet to come. Will this year see the music debut of another celebrity like Sean O’Pry, or maybe we’ll see some stars follow in the footsteps of Ariana Grande and Kelly Clarkson, going from bubbling-under to chart-topper.

MARIAH CAREY PERFORMS THE NATIONAL ANTHEM AT THE SUPERBOWL

Ln1oUvN.png

Mariah Carey managed to shock the world last week by releasing her 18th studio album ‘Clean Slate’. The album broke expectations that were previously set by critics and fans by debuting at #1 on the worldwide album charts with 945,000 copies sold. Following the album release, NFL officially revealed in a press release that Mariah Carey will be performing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl.

Wearing a stunning red dress with some a few intricate design on it, Mariah Carey looked extremely beautiful as she stood on an elevated platform that was provided in the middle of the stadium itself. The camera focused on Mariah Carey as soon as the Super Bowl announcer announced that Mariah Carey will be performing the National Anthem. An orchestra was seen behind Mariah, showing that Mariah will be performing an orchestral version of the National Anthem. Mariah closes her eyes as the orchestra begins to play the intro of the National Anthem. Throughout the performance, the camera would cut to show that the American flag is being lifted into the sky slowly as Mariah sings the song with a tinge of fragility, but with a strength that sounds hopeful.

As Mariah sings the line, “O'er the land of the free...” Mariah hits her whistle register as she sings the word “free”. The whistle register will certainly send shivers down the spectator’s spine and also dispute rumors of Mariah not being able to sing any longer. Mariah soon belts the final line with hope and triumph, as the fighter jets flew across the stadium with a quick move as the audiences at the stadium gave Mariah a standing ovation. The camera focuses on Mariah Carey one more time, before the next segment of the Super Bowl commences.

After the phenomenal performance, Mariah Carey’s team immediately upload the performance on her official YouTube channel.

Prior to it being an official single, the song has already garnered 77 million audience impressions, making it one of the strongest contenders on the radio at the moment,

DESCRIPTION

Spoiler

‘Shadows’ is a mid-tempo R&B song with huge Soul influences in it. The song serves as the intro to the album, with its sound continuing from Mariah’s outro from her previous album Atavism. The song could be compared to her previous piano-influenced songs like Fragile, Cry. and Vanishing.

Written by Mariah Carey herself, the song about her experiences in the past, most notably rumored to be about her past relationship with Nick Cannon. The first verse of the song speaks about how she felt haunted by the pain her ex-lover has caused her and all she ever wanted is to have some peace deep within herself. As Mariah transitions into the second verse of the song, Mariah speaks about how she felt daunted and lost, alluding to the fact that she might have been extremely hurt from this relationship. As the lines progress, we find out that Mariah’s love with her ex-lover just drifted apart, and that caused it to surcease. As she reaches the chorus of the song, Mariah states that after all these years and drowning herself in tears, she has finally decided to leave the past behind her and be free. During the third verse of the song, Mariah reveals that her ex-lover has been trying to hide himself from her, which in turn made her fade within their happy memories. As she reaches the fourth verse of the song, she continued with the third verse. However, during the last two lines of the fourth verse, Mariah states that she has finally learned and she’ll break free. During the bridge of the song, Mariah reveals that her memories were scattered because of the damage her ex-lover has inflicted on her. But she’s different now, before the final chorus comes in.

Produced by James “Big Jim” Wright and Mariah Carey herself, the song features a prominent piano as the song’s main instrumental. It is backed by some orchestral instrumentals which helps builds Mariah’s vocals to a higher level. With its simplistic production, the production manages to make Mariah’s vocals the center of attention. When asked on the creation of the song, James “Big Jim” Wright revealed that their vision was to tie in Mariah’s previous album and segues it into this album. “When we were creating the album, we wanted to make it connected to Atavism in some way. So having a solemn beginning that’s slightly connected to the outro of the previous album made it work. Shadows has to be one of Mariah’s best works on Clean Slate,” James reveals.

The song begins with a solemn piano playing within the background as light backing vocals was heard in the background. As the first verse begins, Mariah Carey sings the verses of the song in a fragile and defeated tone. With some light orchestral instruments being played in the background, Mariah’s vocals were placed on the forefront of the song. After the first verse of the song, a piano riff was played to build up tension for the chorus of the song. As soon as the piano riff ends, the chorus kicks in as orchestral instrumentals were heard a little prominently in the background. Mariah’s voice sounded fragile but a little different compared to the ones from the first verse of the song. During the first verse of the song, there was only a sense of fragility within her vocals. However, her vocals on the chorus showcases a sense of hope, which makes the chorus sounds phenomenal.

As Mariah transitions into the second verse of the song, some of the backing vocals were added onto the second verse, giving the second verse a sense of mystery. The song remained the same form the second verse, leading until the second chorus of the song. During the bridge of the song, the orchestral instrumentals begin to play prominently within the background as Mariah belts the lines of the song. With each line sung, Mariah’s voice sounded more and more determined, with her fragility not heard by the end of the bridge. As Mariah transitions into the final chorus of the song, all the instruments of the song comes into full force as Mariah sings the lines of the final chorus, with some fragility within her voice. Soon after, Mariah repeats the final chorus once again as she was supported by stronger backing vocals, which are more prominent compared to the one found from the previous chorus of the song. Mariah also utilized her upper register and intricate musical versatility to belt the final chorus of the song. The song soon fades out with the piano chords playing as Mariah hauntingly coos in a “Ooh” and “Ahh” manner, before the song ends and segues to the next song.

[VERSE 1]
I KNOW I WAS HAUNTED
BY THE PAIN THAT YOU CAUSED
ALL I EVER WANTED
IS TO JUST HAVE SOME PEACE

[VERSE 2]
SOMEHOW I WAS DAUNTED
AND WAS ALONE AND LOST
I GUESS WE JUST DRIFTED
AND OUR LOVE JUST SURCEASED

[PIANO RIFF]

[CHORUS]
AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
AFTER ALL THESE TEARS
I AM WELL PREPARED
TO LEAVE THE HAUNTING PAST BEHIND ME
AM LEAVING THESE SHADOWS AND BE FREE

I'M GONNA LET GO OF THESE SHADOWS
(I’M FINALLY LETTING GO)
I'M GONNA LET GO OF THESE SHADOWS
(I’M FINALLY LETTING GO)

[VERSE 3]
YOU KEPT YOURSELF SHROUDED
HIDDEN AWAY FROM ME
AND SOMEHOW I JUST FADED
WITHIN ALL THESE MEMORIES

[VERSE 4]
YOU HAVE LEFT ME LANGUID
WITHIN THIS STATE, BABY
BUT I HAVE FINALLY LEARNED
SO I MANAGED TO BREAK FREE

[PIANO RIFF]

[CHORUS]
AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
AFTER ALL THESE TEARS
I AM WELL PREPARED

I'M GONNA LET GO OF THESE SHADOWS
(I’M FINALLY LETTING GO)

[BRIDGE]
MY MEMORIES WERE SCATTERED
JUST BECAUSE OF THE DAMAGE
THAT YOU EXPLICITLY CAUSED
AND YOU MADE ME FEEL SAVAGE
BUT I FEEL DIFFERENT NOW
BECAUSE…

AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
AFTER ALL THESE TEARS
I AM WELL PREPARED
TO LEAVE THE HAUNTING PAST BEHIND ME
AM LEAVING THESE SHADOWS AND BE FREE

MARIAH CAREY SUPERBOWL COCA-COLA COMMERCIAL

View-of-woman-walking-alone-at-night-102

Following Mariah’s phenomenal performance of the National Anthem at the Super Bowl, the official Super Bowl commercial for Coca-Cola aired soon after. Directed by Mariah Carey herself, the commercial is 30 seconds long, with Mariah Carey being featured within the commercial herself. Mariah’s latest single ‘Shadows’ was played throughout the commercial. The commercial was revealed to be shot when she was filming the official music video for ‘Shadows’. Therefore, making it an unofficial teaser for Mariah’s forthcoming music video.

At the bottom right of the commercial, the letters “Shadows - Mariah Carey - off her latest critically-acclaimed album Clean Slate” was shown. The commercial begins with a shadow of a woman being shown on the wall as the verse of ‘Shadows’ was heard being played within the background. As the woman moved along to the rhythm of the song, the shadow moved as well. As the chorus of the song kicks in, the song fades into the background as someone shouts, “CUT!” The camera soon cuts to show Mariah Carey, looking slightly breathless. Someone hands her a bottle of Coca-Cola and she gulps it. Soon after, the chorus of Shadows‘’ begins to play loudly in the background as Mariah says, “Spread the joy. Spread the hope. Coca-Cola.” The commercial soon ends with the logo of Coca-Cola being shown as well as the words, “Mariah Carey - Shadows Music Video - 13th May 2015.”

BELINDA GOES TO GOOD MORNING AMERICA

belinda-624x351.jpg

Pop star Belinda keeps on her promocional tour for her recent releases. The "Take My Heart" singer has found success in the last month winning her first Grammy award and her Oscar, her last single hitting #1 on the charts (Take My Heart) and now she embarks on what's going to be another big era, Belinda released her new single "I Dont Wanna Fall In Love Again" with Ariana Grande on pre-order a few weeks ago and has got the attention of the public due to Ariana also getting a #1 last week with "Bed of Lies", can they delire a great song? We bet! Belinda now goes to Good Morning America and talks about her new song, her brand new álbum "REBIRTH" and what does she expects with this upcoming era. Catch Belinda's interview below:

Working with Ariana Grande, Sam Smith and more:

Well, the song with Ariana, "I Don't Wanna Fall In Love Again" was something that came literally out of nowhere [laughs] we we're jamming and writting songs for our albums and we just nailed this one [laughs] we recorded it and decided it should be our single.. It's Ariana's second single from her new álbum and it's the first one for mine! We decided to make it like a 90's inspired track, because it goes with what I want to express on my record and it sounds really great.. I love working with her! And Sam Smith, well, our song is called "Downtown Love" and it's a little different from my song with Ariana. I wanted to work with Sam because he's really talented and I think we did a really great job with the song, I can't wait for everyone to hear it! And I do have one more featuring but I want it to be a surprise [laughs] I'm really excited with that one aswell..

REBIRTH and it's concept:

"REBIRTH" for me is a great álbum, I think it's the best one I've made so far to be honest [laughs] I wanted to leave the sound that I had but I just mixed it up with some 90's and 80's sounds on them just to make the álbum really enjoyable! I wanted to make this álbum like this because I was born in the 80's and gres up in the 90's and I wanted to keep the essence of who I am in it, you know what I mean? I also wanted to incorpore European and Latin sounds in it because of my rotos and it's a really fun record [laughs] I had the most amazing time helping producing it and writing it, the álbum is shaping up really good and I love it! I'm really excited to show the world my new sound, I thought it was good for me to have a new sound too to explore the gentes [laughs] so I'm parking everyone will love it. I do think it's an upgrade from what I've done in the past.

I Don't Wanna Fall In Love Again:

This song is really, really cool! I'm really into the rhythm and the sound it has.. I wrote the song with Ariana [Grande] and it was produced by Darkchild and Babyface, I helped a little on it but not too much [laughs] I love the 90's throwback feeling it has and it also samples a song that I love from TLC and I think everyone will be hooked by it! [laughs] I talked with TLC about it and they were just amazed with what I wanted to do with the song and they even heard the final version, they loved it. I was really happy to know that they approved the song [laughs] it was really important! And yeah, I like how Ariana's harmonies and mine go really well they add something good to the song. We worked hard on it and the final cut is amazing! The song will be finally out on May 14th! I'm SO nervous!

What does Belinda expect with this era?

Just to have fun! I mean, that's all that matters right? [laughs] I think that having fun is what I want to do.. And making everyone have fun with my music too! [laughs] I know that many people expect me to just want to go #1 but I think that isn't the main reason why you should do music, you kjnow what I mean? I was really, really happy with "Take My Heart" being #1 because it's like a really great flatter to your music and your hard work but I don't know, I just want people to have fun with my music as they have been doing so far [laughs] I also hope that my amazing fans love this new era as much as I'm loving it. Can't wait!

Belinda's new record "REBIRTH" is up for pre-order and her song "I Don't Wanna Fall In Love" with Ariana Grande too! The song will be released this May 14th!

Worldwide
Kesha on Vanity Fair: BTS Video

After a cancellation of her March project for Elle Magazine which include a visual EP release, singer Kesha Rose Sebert mysteriously released this morning a short Behind the Scenes video of her upcoming cover of Vanity Fair Magazine. The project will shoot by photographer Annie Leibovitz  with creative directing by Kesha herself along with her design team. The short video consisted of Kesha getting her makeup done and talking about the shoot, a her design team and Annie Leibovitz chatting on ideas and it closes off with a short clip of her on set. Below is a short synopsis of the BTS video released on her YouTube account.

The video starts out with Kesha sitting in her makeup room with her makeup artists and outfit designers. They are applying mascara on her as she is sitting in her chair, which has her name inscribed on the back, and she is wearing casual white jeans with a Rolling Stones concert t-shirt. The star softly says “oh, ouch” to her makeup artists as they pluck her eyebrows and apply much thick makeup. The makeup artists then leave the room as she examines their work with a small hand mirror and says to the camera “I feel so pretty right now” before cracking up in laughter. The star then made funny faces to look like a Hollywood starlet in the mirror before she got sent to wardrobe.

As Kesha arrives at wardrobe she is greater by various designers from different independent craftsmen ship companies along with officials from Versace. One increasingly popular designer, Brandon V Maxwell, appears in the video for a glimpse as they all help Kesha get into a black from with a very wide foot part, that's almost like a lily pad. Posing in the mirror the star comments “this makes my butt too big” so the designers adjust it to her liking. The star ten laughs with all of them as she does a very Nicki Minaj like pose. Her one dancer who is on set randomly slaps her butt and she yelps “oh-baby” and then giggles. As they continue to fool around Kesha makes her way towards the set as she meets Annie Leibovitz. Annie then talks with the camera as she explains.

“I've never done a project this exciting or fun! Working with a singer who is so beautiful, Kesha, is an absolute delight. The singer chose me to help because with this issue she wanted to shoot multiple photo shoots and select one image for the cover. We've shoot images for over a month and she's still picking the one. This magazine is going to present a lot about her album and you're going to love it a lot.”

Kesha then makes her way out onto the completely white set as she posed in her stunning gown. She comments to her stylists and team who are helping her get set up, “I love you guys”, showing her kindness. Her team then all leave the set and she looks completely bewildered. They then walk back on the set each holding a white rose as they set them on the lower part of her dress. Kesha then poses as the clip “clicks” and a Polaroid of the image is seen in a desk. The clip then zooms out as tons of photoshoot Polaroids is seen being moved on Kesha's desk. The screen blacks out again as the logo and her name appears.

@Ronlop can I transfer the Samsung SB commercial & deal to MKS instead of Lily?

Also, WMG is yet to contact them.

No, sorry. The SB commercial was signed for Lily.

WMG will contact them now. What's the band's full name btw?
