It was a snobby ignorant thing to say but again it just wasn't that big a deal.

For you maybe, but for the people who dedicate their entire lives to the sport and do consider it an art form (which it is), don't you think it was disrespectful? chi1 and if the answer is yes then that automatically means that you can at least understand where the counter - emotions are coming from chi1

Just because it contains word art doesn't mean it means art in classic way.

So now you're inventing things, it has the word art in it because it is an art form.

lmfao1Are we seriously comparing sport to art?

That's not what we're doing, what we're doing is acknowledging that there are different kind of art forms. MMA being one of them.

Yes, there are different kinds of art, but since when sport is one of them? jj3

I studied fine arts and no one ever even considered sport to be a form of art.

There are dark arts, which is just a fancy word for black magic. However, it doesn't mean it is really art. Sometimes the word art is just another word for skill. xtina11

The ignorance. rip4

Learn about the history of martial arts, jiu jitsu was created as a physical, mental and moral pedagogy in Japan, Judo is based and built on several philosophies. You need to prepare mentally as much as you need to prepare physically, MMA is based on observations and creative reactions, so sorry it wasn't included in your precious fine arts program, but it is most certainly an art form. The first thing you needed to be taught was that art is subjective anyway, so sorry, that's a F for me.

2. Art isn't entirely subjective. I wouldn't take seriously a person who has no clue about art. We all can have opinions, that doesn't mean we all are right.

1. That's not a reply to what I wrote. Reply properly to the piece of information that I provided you or don't at all.

2. But why? chi1 there is a hideous amount of acclaimed artists that never studied art or have an academic background in that regard but I doubt you wouldn't take them seriously chi1 There are endless definitions of art and that alone makes your vague statement arguable.

Nearly naked men and women in a cage, throwing body parts at each other until one of them bleeds and is unconscious is not art.

Men running on a field chasing after a ball and tackling each other down for it, is not art.

Meryl Streep said nothing wrong at all in my opinion. Only thing wrong was that the MMA has a higher percentage of POC then most sports

I didn't say you can't be an artist if you didn't study at some art academy. jj3 Art isn't entirely subjective. Everybody can't define something as art. Knowledge is needed. If everybody can, then we are in a fucked up situation where kitsch and other crap is being celebrated as art. Take Jeff Koons for an example. He earned millions of dollars for his works, but his works are 100% kitsch. He even said that there are no messages in his works, which made his works even more meaningless.

Some artists used pornographic visuals for their "art" and some critics, I guess, even agree with it being "art". And that didn't make sense, because art and pornography have nothing in common. We have erotica as a mix of sexuality and art. If a pornographic movie by some artist is art, then what about porn directors and actors? Are they artists too? Some things can't be art and some people make shit and provoke just to be noticed, famous and rich.

One thing is being a creative artist who has no clue about art and the other one being a person, who isn't an artist, has no clue about art, but defines some things as art.

When it comes to "feeling" the art, we all do it subjectively, even when the message and substance of the art is obvious.

It's kind of.. near violence inducingly horrifying that the same class of people who chose to be offended and obsessed by Trump's "anti-women" statements and resisted any context (like "it's just locker talk") for them will now defend Meryl and say that her comments aren't a big deal, no matter how insulting and inherently wrong they were chi1

It makes no sense to divide all motion pictures from watching even the most trivial, fake and laughably executed wrestling match on tv. There are so many movies that actors like Meryl choose to make that are nothing but blind entertainment designed to generate money and nothing else, to suggest that the few gems represent the entirety of the film industry is nothing but idiotic moo6 Most movies honored at the Golden Globes couldn't even win any decent film festival award, gimme a break.

Basically she recreated the same simple-minded and effective (for uneducated idiots or educated ones) dualistic tension of Trump's speeches. Which is all kinds of hilarious, but mostly all kinds of sad.

@Neyde

You do realize that all you're saying is completely unfounded by any academic studying art today, right? oprah11

Debates about the definition of art are still brewing, even more so than they were decades ago because of postmodern and colonial theory taking off since the 90s in the academy. There are many scholars who in fact doubt the "erotica" / "pornography" type distinctions and several notable scholars have just abandoned the very idea of defining art in favor of just studying the phenomenon of people calling something art and rejecting other stuff as non-art, since that is the really interesting thing rih5 So no, your idea of art just represents the uncritical, lame common sense theories of people who actually don't know what they're talking about.
