The album is excellent, I don't think there's any way this would've taken me years to get into. dead2 Not sure if I'll do Erotica or I'm Breathless next; I've only done one listen of IB as opposed to like four listens of Erotica.

I couldn't connect with it, i don't know why, it felt like it wasn't Madonna album dead7

Only last year when i bought physical copy and stared listening it while reading booklet i started falling in love with it. And I'm glad i did, i hated the fact that i disliked album so much that at one point it was actually my least favorite M album.

I agree with this entire review. oprah2

You literally stan every single one of my fave tracks (LAP, Oh Father, TDDUP, Spanish Eyes) kr1 and I do have a soft spot for Love Song too. Glad you pointed out how it's a great midway between Prince and Madonna. I personally don't think she hates it, otherwise she wouldn't have reworked the track into Hung Up. jj2

Keep these great reviews coming! @Lachlan yas2

A nice side fact is that Confessions actually makes a lot of references to Like a Prayer and some of her earlier songs.

Well talent needs to be recognised! I have a feeling you won't be agreeing with my Erotica review but we'll see. lol1

When will you post it? interesting1

I'm not too sure, I have the weekend off work so I can squeeze in a few more listens and type up a review but that isn't a guarantee. It'll most likely be somewhere between Monday and Wednesday. jj2

I'll be fine as long as it's below Like a Prayer and Ray of Light. sass1

Good review.

I still don't know exactly what this album is about to be honest, there's a clear message of dealing with the male authority figures in her life (lover, father and then finally god - she's the one consistently being punished) and there's this other undercurrent of contrast and contradictions, hope leading to disillusions, illustrated by the dynamics of songs such as Express Yourself versus Love Song & Till Death Do Us Part. And then the mysterious reversed choir vocals in Act of Contrition... it just seems like the album deals with the concept of paradox as well, which she talked about on several occasions.

Cherish :

I perish the thought of ever leaving, I never would

Vs.

Oh Father :

I got away from you, I never thought I would

Don't know exactly what she's telling us, but it's definitely intentional.

And the theme of disillusionment is displayed in the contrast between Dear Jessie (who's by the way is the name of the track's producer' baby daughter who Madonna connected with and saw her younger self in her.) and Oh Father, clearly highlighted by the following lyric "what a child will believe" and then there's the contrast between Keep It Together & Oh Father, one moment she's running away from her father and the other moment she's preaching about family values and how her father tells her she's always welcomed around? or maybe that's an ironic statement about your true friends being your family - which she bluntly states in the Blond Ambition performance lj1

And beside the title track, there are some concerning sexual images that she draws in some tracks, like Spanish Eyes for example...

I light this candle and watch it throw

Tears on my pillow

oprah8

Definitely an album that deserved its' critical praise, even if you don't completely understand it - it's so beautifully conducted that it just doesn't matter.

Why don't you open a thread where you're going to review every album? oprah8

Maybe I will when I'm in the mood to do it, right now I'm not. tay1 but there's tons of substance to analyze in her work, which I always like to point out in threads like this, there's so much that goes on in her albums / tours / music videos that fans just don't know of or don't appreciate which aggravates me kinda oprah11 I think it's time we start discussing things on a deeper level because her work warrants that oprah13 (well, at least pre 2010 Madonna minus the genius MDNA tour)

I'm currently listening to music that has nothing to do with popular culture, so Madonna has been thrown out of the loop for a while moo6 I'll eventually come back to revisit her discography when I feel like I missed it and I'll probaby write reviews then lj1

@Lachlan How can you go from LAP to Erotica without experiencing Vogue, Justify my love and This used to be my playground in between fall2

First 2 are so important fall2

I have listened to all of these! Justify My Love and Rescue Me really kind of foreshadow what Erotica would be about lyrically and sonically which is nice. I did enjoy I'm Breathless a lot, as well as Playground. I'm just so eager to properly dive into her 90s albums because they're so brilliant.
