lol I heard about that but I think it's just a coincidence bc YOI aired late 2016 and this movie came out in January

Never seen this show and probably won't watch this movie so I don't have a lot of stake in it, but looking at the cast they actually did cast at least two Japanese actors, and if this adaptation isn't actually set in Japan (in this case it'd be a bit contrived to have all these Brandon Routh-level-of-white people galavanting around...), then I don't see why the race of these characters matters.
