Fergie leaves Interscope - UPDATE: Double Dutchess COMING on BMG label

Fergie, the Black Eyed Peas star who embarked on a successful solo career with 2006’s “The Dutchess,” is no longer on Interscope Records, Variety has learned. Says a label source: “The decision was made to part ways. We were all in concert and want what’s best for Fergie.”

The singer is planning her next release with BMG, adds an insider, though it’s not clear if the ink is dry as yet. At BMG, Fergie would be joining such acts as Avril Lavigne, Blink-182, Blondie, and At The Drive-In on the company’s recorded music roster. The nearly 10-year-old division of Bertelsmann is based in Berlin, with U.S. offices located in Los Angeles. Recently, BMG was awarded Independent Publisher of the Year at the 34th annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards, winning for the second year in a row.

Fergie has released three singles since 2014, “L.A. Love,” “M.I.L.F. $” and “Life Goes On,” none of which cracked the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The tepid reception was surprising considering it had been so many years since “The Dutchess” was released, selling more than 5 million albums, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and yielding three No. 1 songs — “London Bridge,” “Glamorous” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry” (“Fergalicious” reached No. 2). Also, the video for “M.I.L.F.” featured such beauties as Kim Kardashian, Ciara, and Chrissy Teigen toying with bottles of milk, and has logged more than 173 million YouTube views.

Interscope, a Universal Music Group imprint, is part of the Interscope Geffen A&M family of labels. Fergie was signed via Will.i.am Music Group, the label founded in 1998 by the Black Eyed Peas frontman.

A rep for Fergie could not be reached for comment.

So basically she'll scrap everything she's done for her upcoming album and start all over again?

No, she's likely walking away from Interscope with the rights to all the songs. Interscope clearly didn't have faith in the material; why would they want to retain control of it?

Not necessarily- Interscope are the rights holders to those songs and they will have to give her permission to take them with her.

Often labels don't allow that to happen as they don't want rival labels to have hits with songs they couldn't make into hits.

Other times they do allow songs to leave their building (see Katy's OOTB)

That's not surprising at all though. Having a new album ~10 years after your last one and it doesn't have any hits? I'd be more surprised if it did with that long of a wait.

Let's not act like Fergie's gonna get 3 #1 smash singles (again moo1) with this album tho, so I don't think they really care about it.

It's rumored she paid for the recording of the music and videos out of her own pocket. Generally, that's something the label will foot unless a deal's been worked out previously for control of the rights by the artist. I very much doubt she would be willing to scrap a whole album's worth of finished material two singles into the era. Not saying it's not possible, just doesn't seem probable.

That depends. If they funded the album...they own it.

if she becomes famous again with BMG, they could release it to recoup their money. In this case BMG could buy the album rights back to prevent this.

If she funded it, then she could retain rights if Interscope gives it back to her - which is your point.

She will have been paid an advance to make an album and whether she paid for it or not, she is likely still in debt to Interscope as she will be yet to recoup from the recent music as it has all flopped.

Interscope aren't going to let Fergie just walk off with material they've spent resources and money on recording and marketing just for her to put it on a BMG album and let BMG take the profit.

Of course they can sell it to BMG if they want to, its just whether BMG consider it strong enough to buy
