is Katy being polarizing?

I'll say people are getting more conscious about social matters and being more activist over it, and I find that totally amazing.

Almost to an unnecessary extreme, though.

Aren't there people boycotting Bon Appetit and Katy because one of the Migos is homophobic? Like c'mon now.

I just grew away from her as a person over time. It wasn't an all at once thing, I just slowly but surely stopped being a hardcore fan of the person behind the music. shrug1

But I still subscribe to her music and I love both "Chained To The Rhythm" and "Swish Swish". Excited for the Witness album.

I'm not sure it's unnecessary tbh.

Imagine how people that got their culture stolen by a privilege white straight girl. About the homophobic topic, I'm not sure everybody is boycotting but why would she get the support of gay people when she's working with homophobics? Although I dont think that's the reason Bon Appetit flopped hard, the main reason is because the song sucks.

Well lets not forget that the Obama black hair controversy blew up around the release of the song so it turned some people off .

I think she's just cognizant that it's her turn for the public to have an overload of hate for. She could either be torn up about it and be overly defensive / sensitive in response *cough Gaga cough* or she could do what she's doing, which is quite literally not letting the negativity get to her, or at the very least not let it show that it got to her.

The people saying she's appropriating are, imo, wrong. I interpret her goofiness in the BA performance as her specifically playing up the Whore girl trying to be down to comedic effect. She knows she's not part of that culture, but if she wasn't a worthwhile collaborator, she wouldn't have consistently done so. And she has. The parts that are genuinely problematic (the tone deaf black hair remark and the use of a derivative of the n-word) make her privileged and a bit thoughtless, not a default racist.

I don't think anything she's done is as disgusting as what Miley did. Especially since she's had hip hop collabs consistently and didn't just do it for one era when she needed a reinvention. Barf. It's also not like Taylor who added black influences in SIO. Yes part of that was to make light of herself, and I get that. But she also made the black dancers props and dressed like them in order to showcase that she got hot and wanted to be sexy now, even though she was one step ahead by recognizing the humor of being perceived in that way. Then there was Kendrick's throwaway feature on BB which was obligatory and gross and equatable to all the other stupid people who hopped on that song/video. They were all there to "authenticate" Taylor's beef and were objectified themselves. They were just too stupid to admit it.

Katy is not blameless. I'm not saying that. She's made missteps. But she's also been unlucky enough to continue traditional pop star routes of culturally "themed" looks and performances in a time when such things have become problematic not just to SJWs, but to the GP as well. I don't think her intent has been to appropriate regardless, and if it was, it certainly isn't the same as the examples I mentioned. At least IMO.

but the context of those features were her needing the extra sales to go #1. Only CG had the feature from the jump.

As someone with a polarizing personality myself, i'd say she's not genuinely polarizing, like she's very tactful with it? but she's trying to get ppl talking... that's her main goal for this era.. keeping the conversation about her going on.

I believe it is working, but you can't play it safe when you're being polarizing, you either get full support (because you're so upfront and honest) or you get hated on (because everything u do will end up offending some ppl)... she has always loved playing it safe, so i guess she will not make it... she's just not equipped. :(

I love her in this era tho ny3

wasn't the paragraph about her rejecting the drag queens in snl proven false already by billboard and the drag queens themselves?

yes, everything about the drag queen scandal has been disproven.

At first when she was getting backlash after backlash for what ended up being a lot of fake news, I was wanting her to comment on it and explain the truth, but she never did. And now I realize how amazing that was because she knew her truth and didn't give the bull crap any attention.

I also love that she really isn't playing it safe this era. People are so busy making fun of her dancing, griping about fake stories surrounding her, saying that she looks like Miley to note the things that actually matter this era, such as:

1) One of the biggest stars in the world (one who's especially popular with families) makes her lead single about being politically and socially aware at the risk of pissing off her Conservative fans even more.

2) Deliberately stepping off the stage to let her diverse group of guests own the stage during her SNL performance.

3) Constantly speaking up on issues she believes in and pairing up with Boys and Girls Club of America for her tour.

There's a lot more but the point is this: I'm all for calling out my faves when they're messy (and Katy has been messy, none of the faves are perfect) but geez save the criticism for something worth criticizing her for.

I thought this new era had serious potential with Chained To The Rhythm, since it was different from anything Katy has done, but after that she just... started trying too hard. anna1

Bon Appetit isn't even a bad song (minus the steaming pile of garbage that is Migos) but the promo for it is absolute cringe ari1 and Swish Swish sounds like literal elevator music. brit9

I don't know what went wrong, the fact that Katy saw lackluster success and is trying to get back to her peak days, or her label isn't pushing the right songs for the album. brit10

I think it has to do with 0 build up in the song chi1  and the rap verse didn't add anything onto it either. It reminds me of Bad Blood and how lackluster it was, since it's a diss track in response to it brit5

She's been getting a lot of negative attention lately, and most of it is just false rumours. I'm not gonna go as far as saying that there's somebody trying to take her down, but it's strange how sudden all this hate is. The fact that she doesn't dispel any rumour herself doesn't help. But I'd say that that's a conscious decision on her part, she's probably above all that petty business.

In regards her music, I've loved every release thus far! cry9

Katy's power had always been her mass appeal. She is, however, rapidly losing that.
She was one of the major players in Hillary's presidential campaign. Normally that wouldn't have been a problem, but in a country so torn and divided, it wasn't a wise move career-wise. By endorsing Hillary she alienated half of her general listeners and lost the strong foundation she initially had. It doesn't help that she's been increasingly outspoken about her views on issues either. Respectable? Sure, but again, not a wise career move.

She's made herself a target.

Taylor swift is better and doesnt wear a genre like a costume and treat cultures like accessories. Dislike her all you like, but she knows who she is and stays in her lane. Katy however has no qualms
