Britney Spears' Vegas Residency Is Ending, And It's Leaving Behind An Incredible Legacy

Sorry to say Britney fans, but the singer’s “Piece Of Me” Las Vegas residency is, in fact, ending. After initially signing on for a two-year stint and then renewing her stay for another two, the internationally adored pop star has apparently had enough of Sin City for the moment, and the final show of her program is set to wrap on New Year’s Eve at the end of this year.

In its years on the Strip, “Piece Of Me” earned the distinction of being one of the most successful shows to ever descend onto Vegas. Earlier this year, the residency, which played like a greatest hits collection, announced that it had sold more than $100 million in tickets, and that doesn’t take into account merchandise sales or the shows the singer still has yet to perform before she’s officially done. That’s an enormous sum of money—and it also doesn’t take into account any additional revenue those who came to Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas spent on hotel rooms, restaurants, alcohol or in the casino—and it's difficult to estimate an all-encompassing sum that might explain just how valuable the chanteuse really is.

The legacy Spears leaves is much larger than money, even though the final total she’s likely responsible for is massive. Money comes and goes, especially in a city like Vegas, but the “Womanizer” singer has changed one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world for good, and it's impossible to attach a price tag to that kind of revolution.

Before the Grammy winner came along, Las Vegas residencies were only for those on the downswing of their career. Those taking part were certainly still stars (nobody could claim names like Elton John or Celine Dion aren’t some of the biggest in the music business), but they weren’t the type that were still playing for top 40 stature. While the past four years have not been the most successful for Spears on the charts, she hasn’t stopped releasing new albums or pushing catchy singles. In fact, while she’s been busy in Las Vegas, the singer has debuted two albums (Britney Jean and the more recent Glory) inside the top 10 on the Billboard 200, and she has charted five singles on the Hot 100.
