But the context was provoking, you'd get suspended from school here if you hummed Like a Virgin in 1984, legit. And when the songs seemed harmless she'd make them thought provoking with the visuals such as Material Girl, which is an artform she was one of the first to really popularize in Mainstream music, giving the songs' new meanings through the associated visuals, even tracks like Physical Attraction were doomed too sexual back in 1983. Tons of examples, and I'm not sure I entirely agree about your statement, Madonna (debut) was a new take on Disco and upbeat synthetic soundscapes, it's even credited for using new technology at the time. But you're right in a sense that she completely upped the control over her musical direction with the upcoming albums.

Except they were since they started POP music. She debuted when disco died.

Madonna said on Oprah few years after Spin interview that she didn't said what was reported (probably that part about killing, since her point was that labels owned artists and forced them to be basic which was true) and thought about calling that person to explain what she said. But since Mariah reacted basically the next day Madonna probably never called her. She also never said anything negative or shaded her ever again.

Also the "forced them to be basic" part was true about Mariah, but not Whitney. All Whitney wanted was to showcase her talent and soul as much as she could, she was never the creative visionary type and there's nothing wrong with that. Her voice is enough to validate her level of artistry.
