Are Gypsy/Romani Traditions Child Abuse ?

Recommended Posts

Gypsy/Romani traditions often involve encouragement of children around the age of 14 to present themselves as sexual objects to attract potential spouses, bride markets where family of potential husband pays for/buys the girl... Although in most cases, even children themselves accept these traditions as part of their culture, and lead happy lives.

Should these traditions be allowed to socially live on considering people don't seem to be dissatisfied regardless of the fact that most of these traditions would be considered child abuse by modern standards ?

Spoiler

I personally feel like those traditions are toxic. I mean, you just can't objectify young girls at the age of 14 already. And it's definitely child abuse in some cases. But as long the community (or the girls) don't speak out about it, I feel like we can't really do much about it because we are outsiders or something? I don't know.

By our standards, yes.

But as the person above me said, to them, it isn't, and as long as it isn't for them, it won't be stopped.

Romani people face so many shit. Maybe first Western society needs to accept them and integrate them and maybe then their traditions evolve.

I know it's widely used and as a result most people don't know, but isn't "gypsy" actually a slur? rip4

Child bride shit isn't seen as a "tradition" in Nepal, India and Bangladesh. Young women try to make it known, and rebel against their families. I have zero clue what do Rromani think about those things though, I'm sure there are girls that don't want that, and those that do. 14 years old isn't too young to want a wealthy husband, let alone a younger one. I don't reckon they're being married off to old creeps.

All and all, our society is truly global: no matter the culture, children are voiceless everywhere trash1
