If ignorance is a bliss you must be the happiest person in the world. Madonna has 22 tracks that went #1 while Rihanna has only 12 #1s. This means that Madonna has 10 more songs respect to Rihanna that went to number 1 in the planet Earth. In addition, Madonna has way more top 10 hits in all the countries. The reason why Madonna has more hits than Rihanna is that her voice is not annoying AF and she always set new trends, like the one that she started with her fashion choices in the Confessions era. Rihanna dreams to be called the "black Madonna" but the real tea is that she will never reach Madonna level of success and relevancy.

im pretty sure Rihanna has more than 12 #1's

You really haven’t listened to her albums, have you? brit5 You’re the last to speak on the subject then

I’ve listened to all her albums actually. Her 80s stuff sounds very of the time (with the exception of some timeless tracks on LAP), Erotica fit in with the new jack swing trend (and she threw a soft ballad and a glittery disco bop that sampled one of her own biggest songs in there for sure fire hits), and Bedtime Stories (while it is amazing) was her most overt attempt to get back into good graces after her previous album failed. From Ray of Light to Confessions on a Dancfloor she had given up on following trends and made imo some of her best work. We won’t discuss what happened after that.cheryl1

But this is just an absurd way of thinking. brit11 There's a difference between being aesthetically on trend and between being a trend hopper, that's like saying FKA Twigs is the latter kind of artist 'cause her music channels mainstream soundcapes, that's a sweeping argument that doesn't address the fact that she still doesn't sound like anything out there due how her music is structured production wise, and the same applies for records like Erotica

I mean, you can't pretend that this :

Is the same as this :

Completely different approach.

Completely different approach.

1. The FKA Twigs argument is irrelevant because she hasn't changed with the times and been consistently on-trend for most of her career the way Madonna has.

2. Erotica is great, but you could've found production similar to a lot of the songs in any New York club around the early 1990s.aura1

Madonna made great albums out of the contemporary sound of the time (with songs that were often experimental and fresh in their own right while still being accessible) and usually threw in a couple of surefire hits as well. I'm still kind of confused as to why you seem to take this as a bad or insulting thing to Madonna, but whatever.gaga12

who the f is AKB48?

AKB48 is a J-Pop girl group. Though, it has numerous members, around 130. They're actually very popular in Japan, and are one of the best selling girl groups of all-time.

I'm just correcting you, just because a certain project was aesthetically on trend doesn't mean that it "fits in" that very same trend and the prime perfect example of that being FKA Twigs. Yes, it borrowed from the times but the product itself was something new to Popular music and that makes a vast difference. That's way more brave than releasing a conventionally structured American ballad in times where, let's say, Hip Hop and Trap music are dominating the charts. oprah14 The way the production operates on Erotica is completely different to the New Jack Swing soundscape that was going on around that time, she actually made it less accessible if anything, now when do Pop stars do that...brit12

Nothing that Madonna did musically (with the exception of Ray of Light) was ever that shocking or new? All her 80s albums were reasonably conventional, and Bedtime Stories was literally released to tone down her image after backlash.dead2 Erotica sounded like it could've come out of any New York club at the time, that literally was THE sound.

Not saying she wasn't risky, but she was a trend follower just like pretty much every other main pop girl ever.dead1

For Pop music, she did plenty of unprecedented efforts. Her first three albums were trend hopping, sure, despite her debut being very forward thinking in terms of production and structure, but for the sake of avoiding a bigger argument I'll let that slip that under the rug. Like a Prayer conventional for Pop music? wendy4 A 6 minutes song, that elaborately collaborates funk, rock, Pop and gospel is something that was heard of in Pop music back then? I mean, the last 3 minutes don't even have a chorus, how is that a conventional way of crafting a song that is targeted for radio / commercial approval? It's only viewed as absolute commercialism (and I'm not saying it's not to a certain extent) after the fact 'cause it worked out, same goes for songs such as Justify My Love, 'cause hearing a Pop star sensually talk her way into a mellow Trip Hop beat is so cas', or releasing a Disco / House song (Vogue) after a decade of that genre's total irrelevance. oprah14

I mean, imagine this, you're in this lit scene in a New York club and suddenly this plays

I don't know how your mindset functions, but in my mind people would not get up and start vibing to it.

Mariah Carey is, in fact, the most unoriginal of the 90s singers.

Of the singles she released in the 90s approximately 75 percent are largely based on old songs, covers or blatant rehashes that she hoped no one would remember.

Her only number one hits in the UK are covers. Even her remixes are just old songs rehashed.

Most original my ass.
