Is Glitter by Mariah the biggest flop of all time ?

Recommended Posts

No. There are albums that flopped harder and were released by artists that are also legends. For example Just Whitney sold even less than Glitter and was released in a similar time frame, and Whitney was already a legend also coming from a new and big contract with Arista. But it' ok. The Voice and The Songbird Supreme had their comeback eras after that. We love global singing legends.

Just whitney was released when Whitney was at her lowest point post 2000. It was never hyped like Glitter was.

And 2001 was a hell year for Mariah. But a flop is a flop. That is the logic of music forums.

Sales are relative sis. Glitter was attached to a flop critically panned movie, a meltdown and a contract which had to be dissolved after a few months.

A sale is a sale. A certain somebody would say. Well a flop is a flop.

Whitney had her share amount of bad press as well around that time. She was being mocked for the flop of JW just like it happened with Glitter. Whitney also had just signed up a huge contract. The expectations were big, and then the flop happened. Glitter and JW are not the biggest flop of al time though. But they are on the same boat. Big flops.

I still think relatively speaking Glitter is a bigger flop.

I disagree. Most people dont even know JW exists.

And that is reflected on its sales. Although based on the fact that she was mocked just like Mariah for the flopping around that time. Including parodies on a popular show like Mad TV. It is safe to say that a very good amount of people know about it. So yes same ballpark.

There was zero hype around JW. Glitter had massive hype.

Massive hype like what?. It was a project that should have happened much earlier but didn't because of her conflict with Sony. And it was that conflict that followed that project around after she left Sony. It was a problematic project since day 1. There were big expectations from the label because of the big contract. They wanted it to smash. Same with Whitney. Label wanted JW to smash after giving Whitney a 100M dollar contract. And guess what?. They both flopped hard. So yes, same ballpark.

Glitter was a far bigger flop. Sorry.
