Taylor responds to Scooter Braun buying her masters

Quote

For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums.

Some fun facts about today’s news: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years.

Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. (See photo) Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.

This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it.

When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.

Thankfully, I am now signed to a label that believes I should own anything I create. Thankfully, I left my past in Scott’s hands and not my future. And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make.

I will always be proud of my past work. But for a healthier option, Lover will be out August 23.

Sad and grossed out,

💔

The fact that Scott never offered Taylor the chance to buy her masters is disgusting. He knew that the label wouldn't fetch half as much without her, the greedy asswipe.

I always knew Scooter was a filthy piece of SHIT and that Scott (a republican, no less, it’s what their best at!) would backstab her. She highkey dragged Justin and the Kardashians too rip2 goddamn

On a positive note I’m glad she is standing up for herself. I fully believe Scott barred her from talking politics now, which I already felt like was the case before.

What a fucking ROACH oprah13 I always knew there was something extremely dirty about him, Justin and Kanye are TRASH puppets as well for going along with his Taylor hate campaign, gross.

I'm so glad Taylor spoke up, this is just despicably disgusting, you've gotta be careful with these record label and entertainment politicians, because they don't have there eyes on integrity it's the money and power they want, God I hate that fucking arsehole now alex1

It's disappointing that she fell victim to such a shitbag record deal at fifteen years of age. However, I am genuinely happy that she owns her masters now (through Republic). Extorting her by way of only giving back masters per new album release seems quite... illegal to me. But, good on Taylor!

Well, bastards are bastards, especially because she deserved a chance to buy her work and she wasn't even offered.

I am glad she stood up for herself in this fierce and honest manner though.

She tried to re-buy them back and she was refused the chance to buy them back, and, instead, was blackmailed into signing a new deal to gain them back.

Scooter's absolutely disgusting

I do hope Ariana, etc. ditch him, but I wouldnt expect it considering they seem to share some of the same ideals (i.e. the shade-throwing last year when an asian artist was doing better than TUN on iTunes charts, and then convincing Billboard to disqualify his sales)

Yeah, right, but that still doesn't fall into category of giving/selling her masters in a way that's fair enough, which is why I don't consider ( excluded ) that as a real opportunity from Scott.

Thankfully, she made right decision of not signing again with Big Machine considering everything that was actually going on and how worse it could have turned out.

$cooter has always been a slimy, horrible human being who only thinks about money. He has always been so shameless and disgusting. Sure, it was a good business move on his end, but where is the morals with this guy? Nonexistent. I've gone on a PLETHORA of rants about this piece of trash in regards to his treatment of Ariana and her career in the past but he continues to hit new lows. I'm glad someone of such caliber spoke out about him finally.

Idk, this whole thing is sad and yet.. I can’t but be a little annoyed with Taylor for bringing up Kim & Kanye.

Ironic AF that her new single is called you need to calm down and she’s literally creating drama

She brought them up to make a point. Basically, the man who helped perpetuate that entire situation will now own the master recordings to all her previous albums (including the cathartic album about that situation - Reputation). She’s clearly extremely hurt and it makes a lot of sense to me as to why she name dropped them as it adds cushioning to her reason for feeling this way.

And she’s obviously creating drama but not for nothing - I would speak out too if I was in her place. The man she worked with for 13 years basically manipulated her and backstabbed her on a whole other level than anything she’s experienced. This issue isn’t just about her but all the other artists (women especially) who have been screwed over and will be due to singing contracts with disgusting old manipulative men at young ages. So I’d say her reasoning for speaking up is about that too and not completely self-centered.

Anyway, just my thoughts jj2

After looking into the deal they offered her, it was completely sleazy to even bring up and they KNEW that it was a sleazy deal. It would've trapped her with Big Machine for 10 years and MAYBE they would give her her album back. The deal they countered with gave them the opportunity to deny her her works even if she put out new albums. She truly did make the right decision walking away from this deal and there are TONS of other celebrities coming out and defending and siding with Taylor, each saying how disgusting Scooter is and how money hungry he is. A few have even stated they heard from his own mouth how much he dislikes Taylor. This is another attempt at character assassination after she called them out on their bullshit.

It's appalling that Scott is defending Scooter... well, of course, he did just get a fat check from him. Yikes. These people sure like to pick fights with one of the strongest forces the music industry has had in many years.
