Cruel World is both a perfect song and a perfect album opener. The others are either not that good of a song in comparison OR not that good of an album opener.

Cruel World is able to cast a spell on your Corti organ making you crawl into that whole world of hers on Ultraviolence. It's simply addictive like the bourbon she is singing about and it is like straight from late noir era giving it eerie, timeless, hauntingly captivating vibe.

Kill, Kill, Born To Die and Honeymoon ( its bridge deserves every opportunity to emphasize how good it is and how makes song more vibrant ) also share that somber, hypnotic vibe that definitely invites you to get yourself deeper on the album. ( Well, not so much Kill Kill, but the chorus is singy-songy, so yeah ).

Norman Fucking Rockwell definitely benefits from simpler, classic-like instrumental and it has that springy vibe throughout the chorus. Love is similar in a sense it is kind of feather weighted and "brighter" for Lana record.

But yeah, Ride shouldn't be left out there considering it basically captures energy of all her openers up until Lust For Life. It's dark and dreamy, foggy, sense of solitude throughout.

as openers:

  1. Cruel World
  2. Honeymoon
  3. Born To Die
  4. Norman Fucking Rockwell / Kill Kill
  5. Love

as songs:

  1. Born To Die
  2. Norman Fucking Rockwell / Cruel World
  3. Honeymoon / Kill Kill / Love

and that's about as particular as I can rank them gag1 truly an album opener queen! the first lines on each of the songs alone ... gag1

Honestly I think all her album openers are not only incredible songs but they really give an insight to the sound and themes of her albums.... that being said, Cruel World is the best ari5

as an opener, Cruel World. or sometimes i prefer Ride as an opener.

as a song itself, i think still Cruel World.

the fact that all her album openers are modern-day classics bar kill kill i guess whew the real miss americana

as the song itself: ride > cruel world > born to die > NFR > love > honeymoon (highkey a snoozefest ngl) > kill kill

as album opener: cruel world > honeymoon > ride > NFR > BTD > love > kill kill
