James Dean to star in new film via digital recreation

Recommended Posts

James Dean will be brought back to the big screen through CGI visual effects for the Vietnam War era drama “Finding Jack.”

The actor, best known for “Rebel Without a Cause,” “East of Eden” and “Giant,” died in a car accident in 1955 at age 24. Magic City Films has obtained rights from his family to cast Dean posthumously in the secondary lead role in the movie.

“Finding Jack” will be adapted from Gareth Crocker’s novel. Based on the actual existence and abandonment of over 10,000 canine units at the end of the Vietnam War, “Finding Jack” is an emotional journey about friendship and love under desperate circumstances.

“We feel very honored that his family supports us and will take every precaution to ensure that his legacy as one of the most epic film stars to date is kept firmly intact,” producer Anton Ernst said in a statement. “The family views this as his fourth movie, a movie he never got to make. We do not intend to let his fans down.”

Magic City Films is handling the foreign sales. Mark Roesler, CEO of CMG Worldwide, the business agent for the family of James Dean said, “With the rapidly evolving technology, we see this as a whole new frontier for many of our iconic clients.  This opens up a whole new opportunity for many of our clients who are no longer with us.”

Ernst is producing the film with Tati Golykh of Magic City Films and Donald A. Barton of Artistry Media Group. Canadian VFX company Imagine Engine will be working alongside South African VFX company MOI Worldwide to recreate a realistic version of James Dean. Geoff Anderson from Imagine Engine will be overseeing the VFX supervision relating to the James Dean recreation.

I'm not sure how I feel about these CGI resurrections rip4 I guess it's a case by case thing - if Paul Walker dies during the middle of filming, it seems totally fine to finish that particular movie, and Peter Cushing in Rogue One was stranger since production began waaay after he died, but he did always say he would've loved to have been in another Star Wars film had his character not died, but this just kinda rubs me the wrong way rip4 He's been dead so long, this movie has nothing to do with any of his existing films and it sounds like a pretty big role.

Apparently, the company who approved this have represented his family and Dean's estate for many years. So, this is apparently with their blessing.

Yeah, I know. Pretty much every hologram or recreation or whatever got approved by somebody's estate - it's still weird, especially considering he's been gone for 64 years.

MTE. There are so many thriving, talented and young actors... like why... dead1

Like... there are so many people that this movie could help thrive... but they went with someone who won't even know it existed...

Regardless of how well done this is it will never be an accurate representation of the deceased.

It'll never have their blessing either.

These sorts of things are, at the end of the day, about money and publicity.

Situations where an actor passes away during filming or is brought back posthumously to give their character closure in a final chapter are understandable.

But why the hell is is necessary to "hire" an actor who has been dead OVER 50 years to recreate them digitally and hire a sound alike to provide the voice.

Not to mention technology still isn't at the point where it's flawless so having in a lead role is going to be a distraction for the film itself.

"His family supports us" = They are ok with being paid top dollar for doing literally nothing.

I don't get why they couldn't give the role to someone who is... alive? Like that could be a serious career boost to an up and coming actor..

'Blue Jeans' having this kind of impact 7 years later WHEW
