Is Madonna overrated?

Recommended Posts

I mean i don't doubt she's a legend but i think her legacy is a bit inflated by fans tbh tay2

I always hear stuff like "She's the biggest popstar ever" or "She's super inventive"  tay2

Some talk about how she re-invents herself every era and is so daring but it really just looks like trend-hopping and shock-value.

Bedtime Stories was her hopping on the soft rnb/babyface trend of the mid 90's.

Evita was her hopping on the movie soundtrack ballad trend whitney had already earned so much success with.

Ray of light was her hopping on the energy music/alternative edm trend that people like Kylie had already popularized.

Bad Candy was hopping on the timbaland/hip-pop trend of the late 2000's.

etc.

Voguing and other things she's credited with were taken from ballroom gays in NYC.

To be inventive would mean she came up with these styles herself or expanded upon them, not just go along with whatever was

already established.

Ontop of this it's not like she's really known for having much talent. She was never much of a singer, or dancer, or actress..i give her some credit

for writing and co-producing some of her own music though and still managing to put on a good show with what she has.

Then theres the fact alot of her "legendary music" seems to be forgotten. Almost no zoomers have ever even heard of Ray Of Light or any of it's music.

Just looking at Erotica and her literally selling porn to get people talking and how she basically amped up her trend-hopping tactics afterwards when she faced controversy, says it all.

Most of her career seems to be built on controversy and antics basically, rather than being a great artist unlike those such as Michael Jackson for example.

Ofcourse she has some great music and her longevity was impressive and her tactics for staying in the industry for long make her clever, but talented?

This coming from a semi-stan. Agree or disagree wendy1

This. Newer generations kinda see her as “granny trying to be hip” and barely know her impact on the music industry.

The newer generation trash anyone born prior to 1990, so it's not just Madge. It's a shame really.

Absolutely.

She doesn't have a single classic on the same level as My Heart Will Go On, I Will Always Love you, All I Want for Christmas Is You, I Will Survive etc.

She brought nothing new to table. The entire sexual thing that she is credited for had already been done by million artists before her.

Her performing skills are mediocre at best. Jack of all trades, master of none.

Her musical impact is basically non existent, it's all about visuals and marketing when it comes to her. For example, Janet and Rihanna are not the best singers, but many girls try to sound like them on their albums. No one tries to sound like Madonna.

90% of her music is the same generic, basic dance pop with shallow lyrics.

Eh i would use better examples than Janet or especially Rihanna tay2 she kind of fits what you just described.

La isla bonita is a classic but one thing i agree on is that she doesn't have any classic songs on the level of any of those songs you listed.

I don't have time to pick your whole post apart but let's focus on this for a minute...brit12 You've been meaning to tell me Electronica / Ambient Pop was popular in America in the late 90's? Especially on mainstream - Pop level, let alone Pop stars? bey4 Complete bullshit. It was one of the very first Pop albums to focus on texture in the production / the way the songs progress melodically and it 100% shed a mainstream light on EDM/Electronica in America during the late 90's.

Anyway, if you're genuinely interested, this is a nice read!

WHO are those million FEMALE artists who did it before her?rih7 If anything female artists started doing it after her. Imagine thinking she brought nothing new to the table. Pitiful.

Anyway, underrated by the GP. But I don't like how some of her fans use her achievements to downplay MJ's. They were both influential for different things. That's why they're called the king and queen of pop.

If the topic is trend-hopping it doesn't really matter if it was popular in America yet bey4 it was already a trend in Europe and had already had light shed on it by other huge artist like Bjork and Kylie. I guess you could give her credit for popularizing it in America though.

I skimmed over that article, it seems to mostly credit her with being one of the first to sexualize herself and inspire others to do so. (Even though she definitely was not the first to do this). Basically crediting her with the "Free-thinker" popstar title of not just being a product of her record label which is fair and true. Also that she's a bit of a fashion icon and again that label of "Re-invention" which again is just trend-hopping as i discussed already. bey4

First off, I don't understand how you can compare a mainstream Pop album to a Björk record and proceed to say it's trend hopping, can you not see the paradox? aura1

Madonna is an American artist with an international fan base, how is making a trippy Electronica record inspired by the sound of indie British EDM bands trend hopping? bey4 Bjork has a large following that have a very distinct taste, her sound was hardly accepted by the mainstream. It only reached gold in the UK (wasn't certified in Germany / Italy / Spain etc) and that's during peak album sales. You just... totally lied. dead7 It wasn't a huge sound.

Same for Impossible Princess, it tanked. dead2

That's like me saying Britney is following trends 'cause she made an album inspired LP1carla1

You mean underrated? Many people, in particular, new generations are unaware of her impact on the Music Industry. She literally invented the Controversial Pop Singer that still exists nowadays. I agree post-2008 Madonna is not that good, to be honest. If I had to choose a good Madonna album that came out in this last decade, I'd say Rebel Heart (it's easily one of her best albums during these ten years). However, I agree with Kylie Minogue's impact especially with that cookie-cutter pop star figure she had, I always think that Disney Channel tried to mimic Kylie's first phase of her career with stars such as Selena Gomez, Hilary Duff, and Britney Spears especially during their first years. Furthermore, I'd like to add Janet as a huge influence on Pop Music along with her brother Michael and a few others.
