Teenage Wet Dream

Jake's Top Bops of the 2010's (FINISHED!!!)

Recommended Posts

(Copied this from my other thread tbh) 2009 was one of the greatest years in pop music. Britney's comeback was in full force. Katy Perry and Taylor Swift were breaking onto the scene. Beyonce began cementing herself as the greatest living entertainer in music. Lady Gaga turned the world upside down. With such a flawless year behind us, the 2010's seemed promising and started off with a big, colorful BANG as these pop queens served us hit after hit. Then, everything changed - Soundcloud, Tumblr, and Spotify brought us new ways to discover, share, and consume music. Instead of the artists we were once marketed and given to us on the radio started wearing now that we had the ability, freedom, and exposure to choose the music we listened to and as a result, many new artists began filling up the charts and our last fm scrobbles.

2009 was the year I started posting on here (before the first hack) and now here I am 10 years later, with much different musical preferences than I had as a young twink. The 2010's introduced me to so many different artists, genres, and sounds it is hard for me to pinpoint the music that really impacted me. While artists I entered with such as Taylor, Katy, and Beyonce shaped a lot of my listening habits this past decade, I was blessed to live through such a rich period of music.

Today I am going to share with you the 200 songs that captured my attention and admiration this past decade - a little bit of pop, a little bit country, and a little bit of rock n roll (or what's left of it). Enjoy!

And the moment (none of) you all have been waiting for...

#10 - #1

10. Lost in the World – Kanye West & Bon Iver

An epic monster of a song that only Kanye West could create. What starts out as a soft, distorted voice you would hear in the middle of a dark forest turns into a loud force of nature. The final chorus still gives me goosebumps as Kanye takes his production to the next level.

9. Water Under the Bridge – Adele

Easily my favorite Adele song and one that should have peaked higher than #26. Your traditional Adele breakup song but with an rhythm that blends disco and soul with a light tropical influence.

8. Life Itself – Glass Animals

Glass Animals is a unique band because they are able to make music that sounds like a tribe deep in the jungle trying to create a video game soundtrack. Think Sonic the Hedghehog meets the jungle levels in Yoshi’s Story and you have a generous way to describe Life Itself, a song that will have you tapping your feet in seconds

7. Dancing On My Own – Robyn

Is there any argument that this is the most influential pop song of the 2010s? Cue all the sad, melancholy dance pop we were blessed with the past 10 years. One of the greatest pop choruses all the time by one of the most underrated pop stars of all time. Thank you Robyn for all you have done!

6. Somebody Else – The 1975

You’re probably thinking – another 1975 song really? My favorite band is back on my list with another bop that is peak sad boy anthem. The line “your love has gone cold, you’ve intertwined your soul with somebody else” is one of the most heartbreaking lyrics ever and always gets me in my feels.

5. Cut to the Feeling – Carly Rae Jepsen

Only Carly Rae Jepsus Christ could release a reject of an EP of rejects of her sophomore album and have it be one of the best pop songs of the decade. Cut to the Feeling is peak Carly pop perfection with a chorus that will make you want to jump up in the air and reach for the sky with boundless joy and energy.

4. I Wanna Get Better – Bleachers

Before I knew he was in fun. or touched Carly’s “Sweetie”, this was the song that introduced me to the music mastermind we all know and love as Jack Antonoff. One of the best choruses of 2010 and one of the best lines “I didn’t know I was lonely until I saw your face”.

3. Out of the Woods – Taylor Swift

This song deserves much more justice and praise admist Taylor’s strong discography. I will never forget when I first heard this song’s massive chorus steamrolling through my house on the day it came out (my 22nd birthday haay!!). The bridge is one of my favorite bridges of the decade and in my opinion represents peak songwriting from Taylor and peak production from Jack.

2. The Sound – The 1975

The 5th and final 1975 song on my list – more than any other artist. It was hard enough deciding my top 10, let alone my favorite 1975 songs, but I thought of no better spot for this banger than #2. Lyrics brimming with a mix of narcissism and hyper self-awareness, a pop chorus any 80’s glam rock band would die for, and a killer guitar solo to match. What more could a pop music fan want?

1. Teenage Dream – Katy Perry

Are you really surprised this is number one? (Hint: look at my username). From the day this song was released way back in July 2010 I knew it would always hold a special place in my heart. The chord progression leaves you in suspension and creates that feeling of falling love. Both youthful and playful and yet also nostalgic and somewhat sad, Katy and team created a work of art as far as pop music goes and shared a timeless anthem that will linger around high school proms and pop radio for decades to come
