MALUMA AND NO TIME TO DIE CAST ON ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY (PAID) | USA

Spoiler

One of the most important movies of 2020 is getting near to its release with it being “NO TIME TO DIE”, the new Bond movie that has everyone talking about after it was revealed that superstar Maluma has joined the cast as “Chico”, the sidekick of Rami Malek’s character “Safin”. It’s no surprise that Republic Records is after getting Maluma an Oscar, after their once upon a time protegé and signee Belinda, who won the Oscar for “Best Original Song” with her #1 single “Take My Heart” back in early 2016. This time Maluma wouldn’t only be considered for a nomination on “Best Supporting Actor” but also, “Best Original Song” with his record-breaking #1 hit single “God Complex” who was the first song to stay for 5 consecutive weeks at the top of the charts worldwide and so far has gained over 500 million streams too making it one of the few songs to reach this milestone on Encore. Entertainment Weekly has teamed up with Republic Records to give a coverage of the new side of Maluma’s career. Catch up with the cast and hear some scoop on Maluma’s new album “Overnight Apathy” below!

Entertainment Weekly: Hello what’s up! My name is Raini Rodriguez Relic Oh-Connor and I have the utter pleasure to be here in the presence of such stars!
All: [Wave to the camera]

Entertainment Weekly: Let’s begin with Daniel Craig... How excited are you for this movie? This is what, your third movie as Bond right?
Daniel: It’s my fifth actually, it’s been such an honor to portray an iconic character as Bond all these years. I started playing as him back in 2006 when Casino Royale was premiered so it’s been insane. Over ten years...

Entertainment Weekly: Wow... I love all the Bond movies because you embody the character and it’s been such a natural role for you too because I know that for some roles you have to prepare and prepare and sometimes you have to try and get into a character which is something that Joaquin Phoenix and Heath Ledger did for their roles as the Joker which were fantastic... But for you, it seemed like you just went to the set and did your thing [laughs]
Daniel: [Laughs]
Lashana: It’s because he’s got the look! You know, if you see it you think he’s a spy, damn [laughs]
Rami: Yeah he really does feel like he was born to be Bond which is, very rare.

Entertainment Weekly: [Laughs] Lashana, you play a very important role now on Bond. Can you talk about it for the viewers?
Lashana: Actually, yeah, if you think about it I do [laughs] What I love about this whole thing is that it’s going to show that women can be in charge and that we can be badass too. Daniel has been an incredible guidance as well, he leaves me with very big shoes to fill in.
Daniel: [Laughs] You’re going to do wonderful.

Entertainment Weekly: It’s going to be such an important shift in the franchise. Do you think people are on board with this change to the movie?
Daniel: I don’t know honestly, maybe they aren’t or maybe they are but I know that big changes are always going to have reactions whether it’s good or not. But I’d say it’s best to only be focused on your craft, which is what Lashana did and I’m proud of her.
Lashana: Yeah, I mean, it’s cool that i can represent now women on such an iconic role but it does have it's good and bad. I do read the bad and take it in, I don’t care what people say.

Entertainment Weekly: That’s the best way to put it. I’m so excited about your next steps, I feel that this was a very much needed change. Our first Bond woman!
Daniel: It is.

Entertainment Weekly: Ok so Léa, it’s your second time being in a Bond movie. How does it feel to be a part of such a legendary franchise and do you think that it has changed your career?
Léa: It has changed it a lot! Since Spectre, people have started to take more and more attention to what I do and it’s such a thrill. I could be a part of a great film like Hotel Budapest and I owe it all to Bond. I don’t know what’s next for me here but hopefully, I can see these guys in the next couple of films [laughs].
Rami: Same here actually, Bond has given me a lot of opportunities since it was announced I was a part of the cast and it’s been so crazy.

Entertainment Weekly: That’s amazing, something like being a part of the Bond movie isn’t meant to be taken lightly. This is why now I’m going to talk to this handsome brand new actor! [Laughs] What’s up Maluma, you’ve been kinda quiet!
Maluma: [Laughs] I’ve been... Soaking it all in. I’m still in awe!

Entertainment Weekly: I can see [laughs] I’ve heard that you’ve said for years that acting has been one of your biggest dreams but the perfect role never came. I have a feeling this was the perfect role then! [Laughs]
Maluma: It was, it was... I grew up watching bond movies, my dad is such a sucker for them and I even used to dress up as Bond for Halloween so this kinda is a full-circle moment for me. I couldn’t be Bond but damn, I was in the movie anyway! It’s so mind-blowing.

Entertainment Weekly: [Laughs] How did this come about though? Did you ask for the role?
Maluma: Oh! No, I didn’t, it was out of the blue actually. I was called to do the song, “God Complex”, for the movie and then I remember Zayn, Brendon, and I went to Universal Pictures to show the song and they loved it! Next thing we know, we were brainstorming ideas for the music video. But I got a call from Cary Joji Fukunaga, who’s directing the movie, and he said he wanted me to go to one casting for a role that was in development that they thought I would fit in. Of course, I was very nervous [laughs] but everything came about right!

Entertainment Weekly: “God Complex” is such an important song for you now, it has opened many doors for you... You’re now acting! Do you think this song changed your life? Like, you’ve got some mamoth hits but this one seemed to make a shift for your career and sound-wise.
Maluma: Yeah it did, and that’s why I’ve been giving this song so much love for the last couple of months because it does mean the world to me and I know people won’t understand it but I’m very much attached to it. I just owe it so much! [Laughs]

Entertainment Weekly: [Laughs] So guys, what do you think about Maluma in the movie?
Maluma: They’ll say I did amazing because it’s true!
All: [Laugh]
Léa: Maluma was fantastic in the movie, yeah, I’d say that. I had so much fun working with him.
Rami: All things considered, he did well. We had to calm him down most of the time because obviously, it was his first time acting and in such a big movie...
Lashana: [Laughs] Yeah he did good, but y’all will need to see the movie too.

Entertainment Weekly: [Laughs] I’m so excited about the movie and I’m certain everyone watching also is. But Maluma, the golden question, you’re heading for a release with “Overnight Apathy”. One of the most awaited albums this year! When is it coming?
Maluma: [Laughs] Soon! But I’m working on it. I’ve been so busy with the movie that I had to pause that for a second but we’re back on track. Last night I heard most of the songs on its final product and they are amazing. I can’t wait.

Entertainment Weekly: You just released a new song with Iggy Azalea called “Cazador”, is it going to be a part of the Overnight Apathy album or?
Maluma: This isn’t a part of Overnight Apathy at all but it’s such a fun track. I loved working with Iggy, we’ve been friends for years so it felt natural for both of us to collaborate. Especially in a song like “Cazador” because it’s very reminiscing of “Maniac” which is why I wanted to also collaborate with her. It took me back [laughs] but the song’s straight fire so y’all should check it out on Encore and on iTunes.

Entertainment Weekly: You heard the man, stream God Complex and also Cazador! [Laughs]
Maluma: Yes stream both! [Laughs]

Entertainment Weekly: [Laughs] Ok guys, it’s been amazing chatting with all of you! Everyone watching don’t forget that No Time To Die is now going to be released on August 21st and that you can stream the official song “God Complex” from the movie now on Encore.

Spoiler

Sabrina Carpenter has made a splash in the music industry ever since her debut back in February. Hot off the heels of plenty of acting gigs, she began to take a turn into her true passion, music. Announcing her career progression in January 2020, she began working on music that would eventually lead to her debut single, “Don’t Need You (No More)” in February of that year.

“Don’t Need You” was a hit, debuting at #23 with over 100,000 copies and climbing up to #16 following a GRAMMYs Pre-Show performance and featuring on a Nintendo commercial, becoming Sabrina’s first Top 20 hit. Sabrina used the platform at the Pre-Show to announce her upcoming debut studio album, “On My Mind”, as well announcing the title track as the 2nd single from the album, which released in April of 2020. “On My Mind” launched with similar success, debuting at #24 on the CAL 100 but becoming Sabrina’s biggest debut week yet. Although it debuted lower than DNYNM, the single had yet to experience it’s wave of success. The single would later peak at #3 on the CAL 100 and has sold over 3 MILLION units to date.

Sabrina released her debut studio album on July 17th 2020 alongside Quiet Moment ft. Ariana Grande as the 3rd official single. The album debuted at #2 with over 777k units sold, becoming one of the biggest opening weeks for a debut album in recent memory. As for “Quiet Moment”, it debuted at #1 with over 839k units sold, becoming her first #1 single and her biggest debut to date. Now, Sabrina comes to chat with us about the album, single and much more!

On the Quiet Moment music video

I think Quiet Moment might be my favourite of the videos i’ve done so far. Of course, that’s just two of them. [Laughs] But i’m still in love with it! It’s not as narrative focused as the On My Mind video but I didn’t want it to be, you know? I wanted to try something else and go down a new creative direction I suppose. I wanted to create this dissociation between us and our surroundings that we just couldn’t really do with a narrative based storyline. I think it was a good call messing around with the colours in the video honestly! It really portrayed that message but also made the video unique. Plus, it was a ton of fun to do!

On appearing on Connected Radio

Yes right! I just appeared on Connected Radio on Friday, so make sure to check it out if you haven’t! It was an incredible experience honestly. I’ve mentioned a few times that Frank has been a huge inspiration to me, in terms of the subject matter he tackles in his work and all that kind of stuff so having the opportunity to talk with him about my own project was a bit of a dream come true! [Laughs] He gave me the platform to discuss so many of the inner workings of the album which was great and he seemed genuinely interested too! I didn’t get to meet up with him but I know Shawn was on that episode too and his segment was really interesting as well. I totally recommend checking it out!

Sabrina Carpenter’s debut album “On My Mind” is available for purchase & streaming, as well as her new single “Quiet Moment” with Ariana Grande (& accompanying music video) and previous singles “On My Mind” & “Don’t Need You (No More)”. BOSE x Quiet Moment Headphones out now.

On listening through the album

I don’t think i’ll ever be able to fully explain how it feels to listen through the entire album myself. I don’t listen to the full thing too often but I do like to take the time to visit it every now and again. I’ve described the album as one big train of thought, and I think that’s fairly accurate. However, it makes it really strange to listen to! It’s overwhelming at times, listening through and really focusing on your own train of thought. The self reflection in that is quite heavy honestly! More than anything though, listening to it really takes me back to the whole process of creating it. It reminds me of so many incredible moments I had during that time which I think is beautiful.

On the rest of the era

It’s not over yet! Trust me. [Laughs] I really want to keep this era going for a while. It’s my debut era, you only get that once! Honestly, when I first started out, I didn’t even think I was going to have some fully fledged ‘era’ or anything like that because I didn’t think I would have that kind of success. Clearly I was wrong! [Laughs] Seriously, the support of my fans is what has given me all these opportunities and i’m going to make the most of it. Both for their sake and for mine! I have so many ideas for what I want to do with this album, so you’ll just have to wait and see. [Winks]

On the reception of the album

The album seems to have been received really well, and I'm so grateful for that! Being my debut album, I really wanted to make a good first impression, that was important to me. Thankfully, things seem to have gone really well! I mean, no matter what happened, I knew how proud I was of this album and nothing was going to change that, you know? After all the work I put into it, I was so happy with how it came out. Still, it’s nice to get that approval from everyone else! [Laughs] Like I said, the amount of work put into this project is immense and to see that being appreciated is incredibly gratifying.

On looking back at the era

If you had told me back in February when I released my debut that this is where I would be… I would never have believed you! It’s been a lot for me honestly. Everything has happened so fast, it’s hard to keep up! The whole era has flown by so far but i’ve had the absolute best time with it. I don’t think anything could’ve prepared me for the support and success this era has seen. But it’s not without work I suppose! I’ve worked incredibly hard to get where I am, and I need to remind myself of that sometimes. This era so far has taught me so much honestly. About the industry, about music, about myself… i’m just so grateful.

On the album reaching 500 million streams

For once… I think i’m speechless [Laughs] I’ll try and think of something to say! Half a billion streams huh? That’s absolutely insane. Like, I can’t wrap my head around it! [Laughs] I think the continued support is what really blows me away. This isn’t just people tuning in on the first week and then giving up. People are actively seeking out my music to listen to over and over, which is something I can’t comprehend but i’m so thankful for. I’m glad people are continuing to enjoy the album and I can only hope that continues!

On single choices

Now that the album is actually out I think it’s fun to look back at some of the… interesting single choices! I don’t mean that in a bad way at all. Honestly, I love how we’ve managed the era and how we’ve chosen the singles. Still, I think it’s safe to say that some of the single choices are a little out there! A lot of it came down to what I had ready to release at the time but even if I had the whole album ready, I don’t think I really would’ve changed anything. If this was my 2nd or 3rd album, maybe some choices would be different. But this was my introduction to the world, so I had to consider that as well as the album itself. That’s why Don’t Need You, while perhaps seeming like a really out of place lead single, was just perfect in my eyes. And considering where I am now, clearly those choices worked out!

Iggy Azalea breaks down “Cazador” lyrics for Genius

Iggy-Azalea-FME-booking-banner-wb.jpg

Amethyst Kelly, better known as Australian rapper “Iggy Azalea”, thought she had it all when she moved from Sydney, Australia when she was only age 16. Little did she know that the road ahead of her would be rockier then ever. After being signed to Aphrodite Records, home to Swedish pop singer Zara Larsson (known from the “All Night” catastrophe), there were many differences between the label and her. In July 2020, they decided to part ways and Iggy Azalea is finally able to show the world who she really is and what she stands for.

If looks could kill, you need to call my estilista
I want you with me, but I’m perfectly on my own as well
Independent, but reaching for the top feels so lonely
Tell me papi, are you standing beside me, like a hombre real
A woman like me isn’t easy to win, are you insecure?
Trabajo duro, you’re not crazy

Iggy: “The first line was so much fun to write. Originally, the saying goes like “if looks could kill, I would be dead already” but I played with that saying. If looks could kill, you should call my stylist, because she makes amazing outfits and does her job really well. The rest of the lyrics are about a girl that wants to be with a guy, but is doing well on her own as well. So just like me, I just went independent with my brand and I don’t need a guy that wants to work with me, but I do need a guy just to be with. Just as Cher once said, men are amazing and it’s fun to be with men, but we don’t need them to be around with. I loved playing with the Spanish verbs here as well, that’s a returning aspect on the song as well.”

Don’t act hard to get, they’re expecting that
Are you going to allow that, or are you going to surprise me?
The moment is now, it won’t happen again
If you’re a real hunter, you can catch me

Iggy: “The guy I was talkinga bout in the first verse really needs to hurry now. I really like it when a guy goes one hundred percent for you. That he literally  hunts you and does everything to be around you. I want men to feel confident and a little bit cocky, because that’s what I really like in men. As soon as I like a guy, but he doesn’t do this, it’s over for me. But if he plays his card right, he will hunt me down and catch me like a cazador.

Like a cazador, trigger me like a matador
Make it hot papi, mascalor
Because I’m a wild beast, you need to hunt me down
Like a cazador, trigger me like a matador
Make it hot papi, mascalor
Because I’m a wild beast, you need to hunt me down

Iggy: “The chorus was the first thing I wrote for the song. The whole song was build around the chorus.  I really wanted to do something with Spanish verbs. I really like the sentence “trigger me like a matador”. A matador is someone that fights with bulls in Spain. He triggers them with a red piece of fabric. That’s why we used red fabric for the debut performance.”

Don’t think too much, just do that shit
Making clear that I like you, what clue are you missing?
I want to be myself without interference
If you allow me, I can show you what “growth” means
But I won’t take the first step, why are you standing there?
Look into my ojos, you have to open up
A real cazador goes for what he wants

Iggy: “When I’m with someone, I want to be with that one for the full one hundred percent. A relationship is all about growing with eachother – if a relationship doesn’t grow, it goes literally nowhere. As I just said, I like it when a guy says that he wants you and goes all the way just to be with you. Is there anything more attractive then that?”

Don't be shy, if you don't like it I won't bite
But I see you ain't like that, your eyes tell me otherwise
Yo no soy un santo, pero se ve que tú igual
Apaga la luz que hoy va a haber un entierro
Todo esto para ti es un juego...
It's the way you bite your lips, that makes me lose my mind
You're such a tease, with your fingers on my lips
Your kisses burnin' my skin, 100 degrees, ay mami
And those hips got me hypnotized, I won't lie
Ay Iggy, me tienes mal [Haha!]

Iggy: “Oh, Maluma’s verse is just so attractive. When he first played it for me, I literally screamed and I was like, this has to be on the song. We have been friends for ages, so I was so excited to be working with him. He totally got the vibe of the song right and that what I was looking for. His verse is just the cherry on top, it really finishes off the song.”

Hunt on me like a cazador, atención
I feel the tension between us, papi, damelo
Go for it, hunt on me like a cazador

Like a cazador, trigger me like a matador
Make it hot papi, mascalor
Because I’m a wild beast, you need to hunt me down
Like a cazador, trigger me like a matador
Make it hot papi, mascalor
Because I’m a wild beast, you need to hunt me down
