Why are we acting like #1s matter?

Recommended Posts

Especially in 2020, getting a #1 doesn’t mean shit. Majority of the songs that hit #1 this year won’t even be remembered by this time next year. Many past #1s are also forgotten and often don’t end up as the artists biggest hit.

Some of our faves most iconic hits that are still remembered to this day after years and years NEVER hit #1, some didn’t even come close the the top spot.

So why are some artists and most stans so OBSESSED with #1s? ari10

It's just like a Grammy. While it doesn't define a person's career but it looks really good when you analyse someone's career. Some of the biggest pop songs in many artists' discography didn't even go #1 on the Hot 100 like Thriller, Into The Groove, Stay and Formation

I mean, what matters then? nicki5

Sales dont matter, Grammys dont matter, critics dont matter... and now #1s? nicki5

The legacy you leave behind the respect of your peers and future music acts when your career is over. You could have the sales, Grammys and #1s in the world, those become null if you don't have a memorable or legendary career that's impacted and influenced the industry and future generations.

Having a legendary career isnt the norm rip4

You cant expect everyone to have a legendary career.

I'd disagree purely on the basis that charts show success, the Grammy's don't represent success and are very opinionated/bias.

I'd agree in the grand scheme of things #1s aren't actually that important, more just something for stans to brag about. However Grammy's are really quite irrelevant. You put a well known pop artist against a less known "indie" artist making the exact same style of music and i can guarantee most of the time the indie artist would win the Grammy, it's just the way those shows seem to go, in the same way that many "music critics" are very much bias in favour of rock.

Depends on the year, tbh. They're super inconsistent with that.

Like, 1996 indie darling Jagged Little Pill sweeping best album. Then in 1997 they give best album to Celine Dion. gaga4

#1s matter only in the context during their release, but even then, not really. Others have already mentioned huge, signature songs by artists that didn't hit the summit.

It's better to look at the overall chart history of something (a good example being Anti being the longest charting album by a black woman, but only Work going #1), as well as just how remembered a song is (OSD staying at #1 for 16 weeks, but it's not close to being Mariah's best known song)

As for the Grammy's comment? If you care about critics opinions, perhaps the Grammys would mean something to you, but everyone has different tastes and during different periods music can be unfairly bashed or overly praised for a plethora of reasons.

Maybe it isn't the norm now given how over-saturated the industry is today but if you look at the 80s & 90s, a number of big acts from those eras went on to have long lasting and impactful careers. If it wasn't on music overall then it was in their respective genres. Not everyone of course but a good chunk of them did.

It use to reflect on how relevant and popular an artist was at the time, even though there was payola back in the day too. But now songs literally get streamed to #1 then fall out the top 10 within a couple weeks (Examples: Nicki and sixnine trolls or JB and Ariana Stuck with you) which makes #1's even more irrelevant now because just a brief spark in popularity is enough to make a song go #1. Doesn't really mean the same thing anymore
