SCOTUS rejects GOP's last-ditch legal challenge, dealing the final death blow to the Trump Campaign.

3 things you may have missed about this week's SCOTUS oral arguments over the fate of the ACA | FierceHealthcare

Just before the midnight deadline of the safe-harbor provision that the United States Constitution gives to the Presidential Election process, the Supreme Court of the United States has rejected the last-ditch efforts of the Republican Party of the State of Pennsylvania to de-certify, or halt to the process of certifying the state's electors for President-elect Joe Biden. As of midnight, tonight, December 8, all states that have certified their electors are now protected under federal law, and cannot be challenged in court.

Most court watchers agree that the opinion, which notably, had no signed dissenters, including the three justices appointed by President Trump, is the court's way of signaling that they will not interfere in the process. Outside of MAGA world, most observers doubted that the SCOTUS would even side with the Trump Team even if they made it before the court. A gauntlet of federal and state judges, both conservative and liberal, appointed by Republican and Democratic Presidents, have shredded nearly every single challenge brought by Trump's "elite strike force" of lawyers.

After midnight tonight, the only body left that could possibly challenge the results is the United States Congress, and despite the expectation that GOP house members might turn that ceremony into a circus, no one seriously expects this process to be anymore than a sideshow.

President Trump has long, at least publicly, held out hope that the now 50-50 Supreme Court might subvert legal processes and constitutional norms and reverse the results, but that appears not to be the case.

There is nothing that specifically bars anymore legal actions by Team Trump, but now state and federal judges are impowered to reject the cases out of hand, and the certification will move forward regardless of any legal efforts. The Electoral College will gather to formally elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as President and Vice President of the United States on December 14. The Electoral College votes will be formally received by the clerks of the United States Congress on December 23. The Presidential Election will be officially certified on January 6 by a joint-session of Congress (expect GOP members of Congress to make spectacles of themselves). Donald Trump's term formally and legally ends at noon on January 20, whether he concedes or not, or even if he's in Washington or not.

In short: any hail-mary chances that President Trump might have had of bludgeoning his way to a second term have ended.
