Mariah Carey’s older sister Alison has filed a $1.25 million lawsuit against the pop star for "intentionally causing her immense emotional distress" with statements in her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey. According to a two-page complaint filed Monday in New York Supreme Court, Alison Carey is seeking the money for Mariah’s “heartless, vicious, vindictive, despicable and totally unnecessary public humiliation” of her in the book.

Alison, who is representing herself in the lawsuit, says in the chapter titled “Dandelion Tea,” Mariah details serious allegations against her character. In the book, Mariah accuses her older sister of giving her Valium when she was 12, trying to "pimp her out," and of throwing a cup of boiling-hot tea on her causing third-degree burns; Alison disputes these allegations.

Instead, she accuses Mariah of using her book to “humiliate and embarrass” her. Alison says the “outrageous” allegations have been repeated and published around the world. Alison says she is already “permanently damaged as a result of being forced by [Mariah] and her mother, while a pre-teen, to attend terrifying middle-of-the-night satanic worship meetings that included ritual sacrifices and sexual activity.” Alison says she has been diagnosed with post-traumatic disorder, anxiety and depression. She also said she suffers from a traumatic brain injury from a brutal attack during an unsolved home invasion in 2015 that left her with short-term memory loss and permanently damaged vision in one eye.

Despite the fact that Mariah knows she is “penniless,” Alison claims she continues to attack her to promote sales of her book. Alison says she is already severely depressed due to the “unspeakable trauma of her childhood and having her own children abandon her.”

A rep for Mariah has not yet responded to Billboard's request for comment about the lawsuit.
