Nightcrawler is the third studio album by Canadian singer the Weeknd, released on February 24 2020, by Republic Records and XO. It was produced primarily by the Weeknd, along with a variety of producers such as DaHeala, Illangelo, Max Martin, Metro Boomin, and OPN, most of whom the Weeknd had worked with previously. The standard edition of the album features Troye Sivan on the song June, and the remixed edition contains guest appearances from Chromatics and Nicki Minaj. Thematically, Nightcrawler explores promiscuity, overindulgence, and self-loathing.

The album has been perceived as a reinvention for The Weeknd, with the introduction of new wave, retro and dream pop influences. The artwork and aesthetic for the album's promotional material has been described as psychedelic and being inspired by various films, such as Casino (1995), The Shining (1980), Halloween (1978), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Joker (2019), Uncut Gems ( 2019). The title of the album was inspired by the 2014 movie of the same name by Dan Gilroy.

Nightcrawler debuted at #2 and was supported by two singles: "Pursuit" and "Fever", with the later topping the Billboard Singles Chart. The album was reissued as Nightcrawler (Deluxe) on February 28th.

Tracklist:

AUTOMATIC LOVE (ABEL “THE WEEKND” TESFAYE, JASON “DAHEALA” QUENNEVILLE, CARLO “ILLANGELO” MONTAGNESE, ADAM FEENEY);

The album’s opener features twinkling synths, setting the album’s heavy throwback tone early on.

KILL THE NIGHT (TESFAYE, QUENNEVILLE,MONTAGNESE, ERIC BURTON FREDERIC);

The throbbing electro-R&B beat with Halloween-esque chords bring Tesfaye’s apologetic musings to another level.

SECOND TO NONE (TESFAYE, KARL MARTIN SANDBERG, OSCAR HOLTER);

One of several tracks that showcases a rather energetic switch-up finds the musician trying to make sense of the end of a relationship, and ultimately taking the blame

EUPHORIA (TESFAYE, AHMAD BALSHE, SANDBERG, HOLTER, DANIEL LOPATIN, ELTON JOHN, BERNARD JP. TAUPIN);

“Euphoria” features a rhythmic ebb and flow that matches the cadence of his vocals. The song finds him singing about how his lover is having a hard time grappling with a debilitating breakup.

THE JOURNEY (TESFAYE, QUENNEVILLE, BALSHE, MONTAGNESE);

In the album’s most potent and visceral story arc, The Weeknd reminisces about his past life, and displays a bit of thematic growth while also referencing his song “Fire” (Trouble in Paradise).

CITY OF ANGELS (TESFAYE, MONTAGNESE, LELAND TYLER WAYNE, MIKE MCTAGGART);

The Weeknd discusses the ins and outs of his current relationship, which he attributes to their personal lives and the fast-and-loose Los Angeles lifestyle.

AMEN (TESFAYE, BALSHE, MONTAGNESE, WAYNE);

“Amen” boasts some of the best production on the album. The synths and trap work together incredibly well and amps up the eerie factor and keeps you holding on to hear what happens next.

PURSUIT (TESFAYE, WAYNE, MONTAGNESE, ANDRE ERIC PROCTOR);

One of the album’s leading singles, you’ve likely already grown accustomed to its numb yet social media-ready lyrics and slow trap beat.

FEVER (TESFAYE, QUENNEVILLE, SANDBERG, HOLTER);

Another one of the album’s lead singles, “Fever” ties in Stranger Things-style energy with a much more enthusiastic lyrical approach displaying thoughts on his relationship, which it appears he doesn’t want to live without.

JUNE FT. TROYE SIVAN (TESFAYE, TROYE SIVAN, BALSHE, SANDBERG, HOLTER);

One of the more vulnerable songs on the album, sees The Weeknd dropping his guard to let some of his feelings out. One of the project's biggest standout moments which takes the album to truly nostalgic proportions.

SWEET DECEPTION (TESFAYE, BALSHE, QUENNEVILLE, SANDBERG, HOLTER);

One of the most pop-driven songs on the album and The Weeknd doesn’t hold back. The production remains upbeat and steady the entire time.

REMEMBER - INTERLUDE ( TESFAYE, KEVIN PARKER, LOPANTIN);

The track combines psychedelic energy, thanks to production by Kevin Parker, with bass-heavy trap rhythms. This particular hip-hop transition is welcome, as it continues to infuse the airy, experimental sound.

NIGHTCRAWLER (TESFAYE, BALSHE, MONTAGNESE, QUENNEVILLE, MARIO WINANS);

Here is where the trap and synth combination work in harmony the best. The heartbeat thumps and echoey production encapsulate the mysterious nature of the singer.

PHASES ( TESFAYE, WAYNE, LOPANTIN, MEJOI PHARS);

The album’s ultimate full-circle moment, sees The Weeknd out of energy to continue on in the relationship he references throughout the album.

HW △ Week 1 △ Single Challenge

Spoiler

cVv4Hbb.jpg

Well, hello! This is my first ever trending challenge entry so here's that. But just before I came here to discuss this Ed was there to do those, but since then he said to take that position for me because he feels like I might have better entries than him. jj2

 Anyways, here's my debut single, coming this Friday. It's called Flowerbomb. I named this single after a perfume that I recently got from Sephora. (It's a good one and I recently did a review in it on my YouTube channel so check it out!) I was inspired by Taylor Swift's recent albums (folklore, evermore and possibly the Taylor's Version of Fearless). And although it might be a bit different from the single itself, I was inspired by one of SOPHIE's songs, which is Faceshopping. I wrote and produced this song with Taylor York and Joey Howard. The song is 4 minutes and 20 seconds long, and it is an experimental pop song. This song was originally going to be for Olivia Rodrigo, but she rejected it and passed it on to Lorde. She also decided to pass it on to me, and that's it! This was recorded before I came into the pop world, which was in April of this year. It was 2 months prior, but an earlier demo goes back to 2019. The album cover was shot during quarantine, and the butterfly resting on my nose is photoshopped. It's not real simply because there's not a lot of butterflies in the area that was shot in. I do have to say, it was well shot for a reason, even if I look like a Billie Eilish knockoff. I haven't talked about which instruments were used, so I'll say it right now in no particular order: Triangle, piano, and stock drum loops from FL Studio because this was always meant to be experimental.

Anyways that's all! I hope you presave the single! Flowerbomb will be released on July 2nd.

THE DANISH R&B SINGER'S LIVE DEBUT OF HER SINGLE

"WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME ?"

LIVE-STREAM EVENT

NEW YORK, NY - New Republic Records signee, Erika de Casier of Denmark celebrates the release of her debut single ‘What Do You Want From Me?’ with a live-stream performance in a vacant jazz cafe with a small stage and empty chairs and tables. The bar to the left calls back to the early 2000s as if it came straight out of a Destiny’s Child music video.

The stage is dim-lit with neon lighting around the stage with decorative stairs. Pinks and blues glimmer in the background as a band of four sits in the back with Erika in the front. She smiles into the camera shyly and then lifts the microphone to her lips.

“Hello, my name is Erika de Casier” she sighs softly, walking up to the camera and blowing a quick kiss before stepping back to the stage, the camera slowly panning out and switching over to another, more grainy filter.

“And this is What Do You Want From Me . . .”

The instrumental looms around in the background as she prepares to start singing the first verse. While she seems warm and inviting at a glance, there’s something off, almost artificial about her presence. She steps up and then sings the first few lyrics into the microphone

“ On and on // There  you go about nothing // Tryna blow it up // Make it into something “

She shimmies a bit as the muffled,  lo-fi R&B production lingers around the empty building, arms flailing and hips swaying to the beat.

“ I truly don’t see a future with you //Too hard to get through to ” Erika continues. The keyboardist plays a melodic set of notes that leads Erika to the monumental bridge, where the audience can hear about a million things going on in the production while her angelic voice acts as a blanket over the beat. Erika lifts one hand and raises it in the air, waving her hand around while she sings the final chorus, holding out the final note before improvising more vocals.

“ Thank you, I’m Erika de Casier and this was What Do You Want With Me?”

The instrumental restarts as the credits begin to roll in, the stage and set fading to black.
