Reality Calling Xrina Stans: Get Real Y'all.

Well, if we're gonna get these threads talking about how Britney has no impact and whatever else they wanted to rant about, let's take a look at Xtina shall we? 

You wanna talk about an artist with very little impact then you can look no further than the Genie in a Bottle songstress. Her career has had some dizzying highs, yes it's true, but her star burned out faster than any main pop girl's ever has. She has never been able to replicate the success of her debut album, has never even come close as a matter of fact. She can barely tour unless she's hitting tiny venues or visiting the big venues with extremely reduced capacities. She trails behind Britney in terms of streaming by over 6 million monthly listeners. Her most successful streaming song is a collab (which I will give her is a great song) but not a single one of her songs as a solo artist, even her classics, have streams that come anywhere close to Toxic, OIDIA, and BOMT.

And we wanna talk impact? Britney quite literally changed the landscape of pop culture in the early 2000s. Her style, her aesthetics, her visuals, and her songs are instantly recognizable, familiar, and loved by millions and have been referenced in countless TV shows, films, and other forms of media. Hell, even during Halloween you'll see people even still recreating the BOMT school girl outfit and the VMA snake look. When Britney exploded onto the scene, everyone was running to keep up with her. Her name was everywhere, her brand was everywhere, and it is etched into pop culture history. There isn't a pop girl working today that has not credited Britney with being an influence on them. Britney's reign has been so influential in pop culture that things as simple as an all denim outfit she wore one time on a red carpet is still referenced and recreated to this day. 

But what about Xtina? Where are her moments of iconicry that have lived outside of stan culture (but let's be honest, she's dying a slow death there too) and become a fixture of general pop culture. Does the GP really recognize Xtina's fashion, videos, and performances as a defining moment of pop culture history? Are her looks and dance routines and styles replicated and referenced in other mediums constantly? No. No, they're not. Xtina was absolutely famous and there was a time she was absolutely big, but she isn't forever etched into the public consciousness. She was never an innovator. She was inspired by everyone but inspired next to no one. 

But go ahead Xtina stans, you know who you are, tell us again how Britney means nothing while you try and convince us Xtina means everything! I'd love to hear it.

Everybody who said that they're inspired by Xtina, well, there's a good chance that they're inspired by Britney as well. We love when people dressed up as Dirrty-Tina for Halloween, but truth be told:

I don't need to say much regarding the infamous "revolutionary" assless chaps design. You can see clearly the inspiration, also with the mini skirt design. What makes Dirrty actually revolutionary is the concept of the video; unfiltered filthiness and bold vulgarity. Xtina's desire to escape the princess bubble was very strong back then. That's admirable. Miley clearly took more inspirations from X than B for her Bangerz era, IMHO, whether Miley realized it or not.

There's also a low-key overlooked fact that Britney dressed like this (amongst many other outfits) in I'm a Slave 4 U video:

The thing is this was the "in" style at the time, just look at most other female pop starts and they were doing something similar. Dirrty is over glorified by stans, in the US (which was her biggest market up to that point) it was a total flop peaking at #48.

I know some will disagree but i've always thought Xtina was more known for being a celebrity than for her actual body of work. I doubt she would be anywhere near as remembered if it weren't for The Voice. Her chart impact was fairly limited and she lost relevancy much faster than many other pop girls, the fact the time span between her first and last Solo top #5 Billboard hit is only three years (1999 - 2002) kinda proves that. The sad thing is that her most successful body of work was the one where she was being marketed as the next Britney, not Xtina. After B2B her only hits have been generic middle of the road collabs.

 

In terms of success i don't even think Britney or Xtina are even comparable. The simple fact is Britney could still score solo hits nearly 15 years after her debut. Xtina could barely manage after only a few years. In all honesty comparing Britney to P!nk is much fairer, P!nk is often overlooked (perhaps because she appeals to an older audience), but she has served far more longevity and has consistently put out hits. In the past 5 years alone P!nk has had the same number of Solo top #40 UK hits as Xtina has had since 2006 (6 each).

P!nk is constantly discredited but I feel that's partially her own fault. For someone who has such a distinct image and performance style, her music FAR from lives up to it.

She's successful on the charts very purely because her music is very safe and not adventurous. Even when she was a bit more interesting she was still doing what was popular (R&B with her debut and some of Missundazstood, pop-rock and hints of adult contemporary with Try This through Funhouse and then a lot more adult contemporary with everything since). Her biggest claim is what she does in her performances which no one else is really doing.

That's why I'm not really sure why we try to call out Xtina's lack of success on her lack of innovation because I think it's a lot less cut and dry than that.

I feel like Xtina wanted to be a chameleon like Madonna, and a vocalist like Whitney at the same time but failed to secure an audience as either.

Unlike Madonna, she didn't stay relatively consistent with her first years to keep a dedicated audience or establish who she is before completely changing her look and sound several times in a row. She wasn't known for controversy, nor her live shows so it easily became alienating.

And unlike Whitney she didn't come out the gate as THE vocalist, especially considering she debuted around the same time Whitney, Mariah and Celine were still successful (Celine starting to peak in the US during this era even), and diva vocals were still being served left and right (Brandy, Monica, Beyoncé, Lauryn, Toni just to name a few ASIDE from the trinity). Not to mention her changing her vocal style again with Stripped to be the more aggressive style we typically associate with her which could ALSO be alienating.

And if that isn't enough she was already bunched in with the teen pop craze that was happening at the time which not only shoehorns artists into an ex-act sorta situation, but gave her stiff competition. (Which she did end up becoming a very respectable #2 to Britney in to be fair.)

I love Xtina don't get me wrong, but with all that against her as well as the things she tried to do coupled with long wait times between albums/eras and it's pretty clear what happened.

I think her label already marketed her as a "girl who can sing sing" ever since the beginning. However, I could see that it's also not, because she debuted "officially" with Genie in a Bottle, which is essentially a dance-pop/bubblegum pop song (even though she had already recorded the pop version of Reflection prior). Compare it to Jessica Simpson who came right out of the gate with I Wanna Love You Forever which was a proper AC ballad, so yeah....

I think it's true that she was automatically became an easy target for a future has been/ex-act status because of the teen star marketing in her early years, but she still managed to break through afterwards. Ultimately, what killed her momentum was her dedication to take long time in-between albums which, at the time, wasn't really the wisest thing to do unless you're either a veteran artist or an underground artist yet to break through the major market. There's also Bionic.

There. It just never been the same after that.

As for the OP; I disagree with everything. 

 

Xtina is a rare and one of a kind talent, just like Celine, Whitney and mariah are. People love to say she's a flop etc, but her voice and live performances always renew my stan badge.
