New German Government to push for an European Federation

Recommended Posts

EU federation?

The 177-page agreement also proposes ambitious EU reform. It will push for a Conference on the Future of Europe to turn into a constitutional convention, while supporting "necessary treaty changes" that will "lead developments to a European federal state."

Top of the list is a new system for European elections that allows transnational lists for the European Parliament, which should also get a right of initiative - in other words the right to propose new legislation.

Currently, MEPs in the EU parties represent a national party. This move will start a move to a broader decentralised European voting system.

The coalition also favours the next commission president to be a 'Spitzenkandidat' [German for 'lead candidate'], continuing the disputed system whereby individual EU parties put forward their own top candidate for the presidency.

Germany has in the past sabotaged its own system on this, pushing Ursula von der Leyen ahead of Frans Timmermans, S&D's Spitzenkandidat and initially considered favourite for the top spot.

Finally, the coalition partners call for a stronger EU foreign office by replacing the unanimous voting system requiring all EU ministers to agree, with a qualified majority, overseen by a dedicated EU foreign minister.

This is one of the many reasons as to why Brexit happened. There was a fear that the German gov were wanting to push a state style system for Europe and remove powers from individual countries.

It can't happen obviously um2 The only thing is that Brussels would turn into Washington DC and the EU Members will be like the other American States. Of course, this process takes a lot of time and it shouldn't be pushed immediately. In my opinion, it should stay like this for now. The Federalization should happen in a couple of decades.

Hitler was a socialist nicki5

just because the word "socialist" was part of the Nazi party's name doesn't mean they had any resemblance of socialism, just like there isn't an ounce of democracy in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea lol3

It needs to be done in order for the EU to deal with their huge debts. Creating a federal system will allow for the newly formed “Federal Bank of the EU” to issue debt to pay off the existing debt held by the Individual States (Countries). It will also force all EU members to adopt the Euro - so no more local currencies like the Swedish Kroner.

But, getting all EU Members to agree will be impossible - so for now, it’s just all talk  brit13

Hitler put communists in concentration camps. The SPD was also banned by Hitler. They are nothing alike

I honestly wouldn't rule it out. I don't really think a state system would work in Europe, i mean even the US system is dysfunctional. They're just areas that are far too vast and culturally different to be fairly and realistically controlled under one central Government and i don't really see what a state system would/could achieve other than more power to Brussels.

Nazis were Fascists, not Socialists. Only those on the far right think they're Socialists.
